Is it just me or are these swimmers pretty dumb.  Both the men and women don't seem to have much going on upstairs when they interview.  Maybe it's because they just got done racing.

Seems like both Phelps and Lochte are on the arrogant side but they have excelled at their sport so it's not without any backup.

Easy to judge from an arm chair. Harder to perform when you just invested everything you had emotionally and physically into the culmination of 4 years of prep and immediately afterward someone shoves a mike and a camera in your face.

Doubt anyone would be terrible eloquent under those circumstances.

If someone shoved a camera and mic in my face less than 5 minutes after I finished a Sprint or Oly I would probably sound pretty dumb too.

And as long as we're comparing athletes, have you ever listened to a player from a major ball sport being interviewed? Swimmers sound like PhD's in literature by comparison. And how about the brilliance of a post-race NASCAR interview?

I like arrogant athletes.  Especially when they do stuff like this: (1) make the Olympic team, (2) in swimming, (3) from the United States, and (4) freakin' win.

The first time I went to an elite swim meet, a very nice lady sitting beside my son and me was kind enough to tell us who was who.  Phelps, Lochte, Jones, Tarwater and such.  She said that Lochte was always the nicest guy at the meets and always took the time to sign autographs for the kids and talk to them about swimming.  I like that too.

Yup - in the interview this thread cites (where he shows off his shoe collection - gasp), he said when he was a kid his swimming idol refused to sign an autograph for him. So if he ever got in that position he would do whatever it took to sign autographs so no kid ever felt that way about him.

I think that's pretty classy.

Edit: he also refused to say who the swim idol was to avoid the guy being embarrassed. Again, classy.

^^Agree.

Okay so he likes ridiculous looking shoes, not exactly terrible.

He seemed like a genuine good guy and I have only seen him be extremely humble in interviews.

Also my swim coach has met both Lochte and Phelps... guess who she thinks the tool is?

If you look at my original post, you'll see I never mentioned Phelps.  I contrasted Lochte's 2 post-swim interviews that I had seen the previous night, and I contrasted the impression I had with the impression I gathered from Brendan Hansen's and Missy Franklin's post-race interviews.  In no way, shape, or form did I find (nor did my wife) Lochte to be humble in his post-race interviews.

I actually never saw Lochte's sit-down interview with Ryan Seacrest...so I drew no conclusions from that.  The autograph story Lisa brought up is nice to hear...I can bump Lochte up a notch on my respect-o-meter.

Mrbbrad, I've never met him either...in fact, there are lots of folks I've never met that I can peg pretty accurately.  Thank you gomesbolt for seemingly confirming my suspicions on this guy.  I originally said, "a wee bit on the arrogant side," ...personally, I find the quote from his mother (if true, which I have to believe it is) to be appalling.  Yeah, I'm a bit on the judgmental side, but to me, that's just gross.

He's a gifted athlete and I'm impressed by that.

However my opinion of him as a person fell considerably after the interview in his house where he showed off all his sneakers and grills.  WTH is that all about?

He's a goofball that has lots of money and spends it on silly things that makes him smile.

He's just a goof.  He is not mean.  Or vindictive.  Or cocky.  He is confident.  He just communicates in a different way than others.

Everything I've heard about him away from the pool is nothing but good things.

Look, I don't HATE the guy or anything.  I just see this as an example of other sports stars who get a little bit of money and then spend it on stupid (yes IMO) things and end up broke by age 40.

I think it sets a bad example.  Just my opinion.

If I remember correctly, Lochte designed the grill and the sneakers as well as some clothing. I don't think he is merely going out and purchasing them. He is using his money to fund one of his other passions -- fashion design. He has talked about pursuing a career in fashion. He seems to have a lot of interests and talents outside the pool, which is pretty cool.

C'mon brother.....he's having the time of his life.  He's young, single, an Olympic champion, and having a ball.  Find me a story where he has hurt someone, or been a poor role model, or didn't work his arse off and sacrifice to get where he is.

I have no problem pointing to him as a role model for my son.

That was my point in posting that article.  I think the comments she made should have been filtered a little better.

Lochte is making a killing on this olympics from sponsors and he has had a great olympics (a bronze, 2 silvers and 2 golds- not Phelps great, but pretty great).  But comments like his Mom's could make the sponsors look elsewhere in 4 years.  Missy Franklin perhaps.

Yes and this interview was not very good either. He is great in the pool but not a natural in front of the camera for sure.

I don't have much to say about the shoes and grills realizing that I am 40 and probably out of touch. Let's just say I don't get it and now that I know all of that I find myself rooting for the underdog when he races.

Just watched Phelps not straight out of the pool and much more eloquent.  It's got to be something with lack of oxygen and all the neurons not firing right out of the pool to interview well.
