actually my principal leaves it on CNN, and its a good thing, or else we'd have no idea about 9-11 happening.  Even being only 45 minutes from the Pentagon.

Nowadays I prefer twitter, its a great way to know breaking news...until they retract something.

And yes, I love TV too. I'm an intellectual, I like being mentally challenged and stimulated.  However, I love to laugh and forget about all that is happening in the world.

I think some people like to say they don't watch TV just to seem smarter.  Well geez, thats how I learned about science and learned I loved it!

Not me....I don't watch it because I'm too dumb to understand most of it. Laughing

I just can't sit and do nothing....been that way since I was a kid.

I find I love getting caught up in a story - it could be tv, movies or books - fiction, non-fiction - doesn't matter.  I don't necessarily feel like i am doing nothing when I am engaged in what's on.  I like to be entertained and watch plenty of silly comedy but can easily be drawn into interesting topics on PBS or our local public broadcaster.  I adore cooking shows that actually teach me something.

But what I don't like is spending all of my non-working time in front of the tv and am one of people who don't have cable (we do have an antenna and get a surprising amount of channels).  One of the reasons I loved taking up running and tri is that I had something else to do that got me off my butt and not sitting either in front of the tv or wasting hours surfing the internet. For me I definitely need to limit my exposure otherwise I would be a complete bump on a log.  I guess it's the opposite problem.

Let me rephrase what I said....I can't sit still, period.  I don't even want to.  I also enjoy a good story, if it can be told in about 5 minutes, then you're losing me.

I usually read for a half hour or so when I hit the sack, but I don't enjoy fiction of any kind.  I'll go on a reading spree where I want to learn all I can about a specific incident, or piece of history, but I have no interest in a "story".....maybe that's another reason I don't watch TV.

It's funny, 2 of my kids that are still at home are like me.....they just won't sit in front of a TV, my wife and the other twin will watch it for hours....go figure.

Isn't "Television" the "T" in BT?  If so, then yes, I probably spend too much time in front of the screen.

Netflix has spoiled my wife and I. I can't freakin stand to watch TV anymore, the commercials just make me angry. Cutting off the show every 3 minutes for another 2 minutes of people yelling at me to buy stuff for some reason just sets me off now.

We much prefer to watch things on netflix where we can pause, watch at our own pace and our own time. I have had people tell me they can't do something on a weekday night because "their show" is on, pretty crazy to me.

We thought about adding Hulu but it seems they are getting worse and worse with commercials on the free version, not sure if the paid version is any better.

I agree with whoever mentioned keeping up with news, sports and general pop culture.

I got a great piece of advice a few years back when I knew I'd be interviewing/working with men - to turn on Sports Center while I was getting ready for work so I'd know if they were talking about some sports thing I didnt' follow and be able to include myself intellegently. Same with flipping through Good Morning America or local news casts. People who just have no clue what's going on in the world worry me... and I don't necessarily want to be one of them.

I don't care for scripted TV.  We watch mostly stuff on Food network, Bravo, A&E and yes, I'm completely secure saying it, MTV.

Pretty sure `Chopped' is my favorite show on television right now. The problem is when I watch it I feel the need to go cook something.

I love TV.  It's almost always on in my house.  That, however, doesn't mean that I'm sitting on the couch lethargic.  I like the noise and all the pretty lights !  But seriously, some people like to have music on in their house while they do things, I like to have stories or music or news while I'm cooking, or cleaning or even studying (I'm selective, of course.  I don't put an action movie on while cracking the books - maybe a music channel or golf).

As for actual viewing (and not just background noise), I stay clear from the network stuff generally.  I don't like commercials and most of it is pretty bad.

I generally gravitate to the educational stuff.  There is a show now called Brain Games that goes into how the brain works on the National Geographic channel that's amazing.  So science shows and history shows really interests me.  PBS, Discovery, Science, NatGeo, Military, FoodTV

As for entertainment, I like to watch some of the better produced and better written stuff like Game of Thrones, Dexter or Vikings.  Sopranos when they were on.

Sports aregood too.  I GUESS I could sit around the radio like they did pre-TV and listen to my stories or the ball game - but now I have pictures!

To me, TV can be a problem if abused (just like anything).  You could game too much, you could lock yourself in to your room and basically read too much, or listen to music too much...  Everything in moderation, I suppose.

I make just about everything I see on Alton Brown...

However, I suggest stay clear from the crock pot lasagna (it was a an insult to lasagna and what lasagna stands for).  And the sea salt and soy sauce caramels.  Yuck.

They've had an actress on before that I couldn't understand why.  She was funny at times, but, her attempt to describe things were bland and not helpful.

We should see if we can send in a resume or something!  That would be so cool being on there.

I do love Iron Chef but I like Chopped because it's more normal cooks rather than people who have Michelin stars and own 50 restaurants. It's more down to Earth.

You can't read too much. Not possible. If the average American sleeps 8 hours a day that leaves 16 waking hours in the day. The average American also watches TV for 4 hours a day. Spending a quarter of one's life watching TV seems like a waste to me.

Gotcha.

So you wake, open a book and read till you sleep.  Neglecting work, friends or family...  Yeah, not a problem.

There is a "Too much" for anything.  IMO.

And of course, watching 4 hours of history or documentaries is a wast but reading 16 hours of us magazing and playboy/penthouse letters - real good...

Can't blanket statement that TV is a waste, can't read too much, etc.

Agree - I am guilty of ignoring everything until I finish a good book.  Just last night for example - i had to finish the 4th Outlander book.  It's just not healthy.

My mom was the same.  she had an author she loved and at our house everything stood still until she finished the new book when they came from DoubleDay - and let me tell you - her historical romances may have provided insight into certain eras in history but that was all that was educational about them.  Is that really better than watching 'The Nature of Things' with David Suzuki on CBC or Nova on PBS?

You'd have a hard time convincing me.
