P.S.  I always love your photos Steve.  I think you missed your professional calling.

Birdy--I second Tracy's comments.  Those photos are awesome!  Like Tracy, I got sunburned this weekend so you can keep the snow in the NW!

We had such a good showing this weekend between Glen, Karen, Jeannie and George...I hope I didn't neglect anyone, but I am a tad behind with all the pages... Love to see all the training paying off!

I'm traveling for work for the next three days so will be checking in sporadically.  Make it a good week!

soccermom15 - 2010-04-12 12:10 PM Hey guys!  Just finished my race report from my half yesterday.  Let's see if I can get the link to work - http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=203273&posts=1&start=1.  Bottom line - I had a great race, met my goal, and set a new PR by 15 minutes Laughing.  Very happy with the way it went.  My legs are a little stiff and sore today (glad I took the day off work) so I don't know if I'll get any training done today - maybe just some yoga to stretch things out.

Off to catch up with posts!
Janet

15 minutes is HUGE!!!

WOW...looks like everyone had a busy weekend!!  Super huge congratulations to everyone who raced this weekend!  I haven't got a chance to read the race reports yet but can't wait to do so.

Unfortunately I didn't get any training in this weekend but I did get lots of yard work done & I'm feeling it today.

ryanp100 - 2010-04-12 11:47 AM But back to AP vs. NP... When I race, I'll monitor my AP from time to time to make sure I'm close to my target number. However, I mainly pay attention to my real time watts on the hills because, as you mentioned, your AP is often not the best reflection of your effort. In a HIM, for example, I usually shoot for about 78-80% of my FTP, and I'll watch on the hills to make sure I'm pacing myself; I definitely want to limit the time that I'm above threshold.

Okay, next question (I may never stop).  How do you manage to reduce your effort on a hill?  My avg power (while pedaling) was around 185, but when I'm on a hill it goes significantly higher - like into the high 200's, low 300's, and I sustain it.  Even if I'm in a small gear I'm putting out a lot more watts, but if I slow my cadence I find I don't have a good rythym.  Thoughts?

This is my firm belief that power is going to make a HUGE difference in how I race this year.  I rode 40 miles yesterday on a route I have never done before, turns out it was fairly hilly.  My goal was to ride around 190 watts for the duration.  When going up hills, start dropping gears.  the PM helped me figure out that I was pushing up hills WAY too hard before, thus explaining why my hilliest course last year I totally bonked the run.  I had no idea how much I have to shift down in order to keep wattage the same.

I pushed up some hills higher than 190 because I didn't want to shift to the small chain ring.  I either need to up my FTP or shift down for races.  The wattage gives you an unbiased number that tells you how hard you are working.  Some declines I coasted down because there was nothing I could do to push 190 going downhill.  It gives you a good idea of what stress you are putting on your body.

I did a 40 miler yesterday and then 4 miles running with my wife not feeling like it was that hot/intense out.  I got done showering and my wife could not believe how red my shoulder blades were from my tri top.  I also got some on my forearms, makes wearing a cast/splint a PITA (Pain in the arm!)

Only a couple of more days hopefully.

OOPS! Fixed!

Let's talk hyrdration systems on the bike for a minute.....I'm looking for a frount mount that holds as much liquid as it can yet it isn't a total pain to take off after a day of riding.  I have the Profile on my Seven and like it, but it requires way too much filling on long rides and I am less than talented at doing this on the fly.....given the size of my bike the Speedfill will not work as a secondary system....throw all ideas and pics my way....need to order this asap!

Why? I do not understand why people do not use the smaller chain ring. Have you ever figured out all of your gear ratios? There is significant interleaving of the combinations using the big and little front ring. The smaller front ring is there for a reason. Why would you choose NOT to use a tool at your disposal? I would reconsider this approach. JMTCW

Funny story about a friend that I thought I would share...

A friend of mine has been talking about doing a triathlon for a couple of years.  He was has been a cyclist for many years and a fitness runner.  He has been talking about it for so long that his wife wanted to get him to finally do it so she bought him a wetsuit for his birthday.  He tries it on for the first time and it is really uncomfortable.  It is extremely tight in most areas, kind of loose in the crotch area and really uncomfortable around the neck.  Turns out that he put it on BACKWARDS!!  He didn't even realize that it was backwards until after he had taken it off and read some of the paper work that came with the suit.  He told me the story and I was LMAO.  I only wish his wife had taken pictures!

When he tried the suit on the right way, it felt fine.

They were only about 15 second climbs in some parts, typically I would, just that day I was feeling lazy and wanted to push my legs a bit more.

My 2 cents, I have been using the Bontrager Aero Pack, love it love it love it, but it only holds around 24 ounces.

Profile Designs has the AquaCell which is a monster.  Dual chambers, but still has some splashing issues.  I prefer the Podium Quest, which is also dual chamber, a bit better splashing control, and installs/removes easier without bouncing around as much.  I have both pictures and some more on my review.  The Never reach would probably not work well since you have sucking issues.

A dixie cup might fit on your new bike   OhOh what have I just brought on myself.

Actually the Profile has  couple of sizes. One is almost double the other. You might have a look at your LBS and see it they have the larger size.
