Regarding the current from right to left, do you think there was one? Is this pretty typical in PCB?

I didn't feel any current. If there was one, it was so very small. Not sure if it's typical.

The best thing to do is get to PCB early and get a few practice swims in. Get a feel for the water, waves, sun position, and current (if any) - this is the best way to get ready.

Here's a link to last year's athlete guide. Page 9, I think.

My bike is continuing to improve from a pretty late start this season.  I continue to ignore the swim, but that will be ok, I hope.  The run was progressing very well, but I aggravated my Achilles and calves and have spent two weeks babying them.  My mind says it will be ok, but still I'm worried.

I just signed up for a 1/2 mary on Sept 8th.  The plan calls for a 14 mile run that week.  I've missed my last two weeks long runs.

Anyone watch IM Canada or IM Louisville this weekend for inspiration?  IM Japan next week end.

This past weekend was a tough one. I had an 18 mile ride by 18 mile run brick on Saturday, followed by a 100 mile ride on Sunday. It was really hot and I was hurting, but got it done right on my goal pace. The training level has definitely driven home the reality of what is about to happen.

I finished IMMT on the 18th, I had a major meltdown with nutrition and ended up vomiting on the second loop of bike and throughout the run. I finished the race, but it was not pretty. Now I have 2 months to figure out a new nutriion strategy, I don't want to go through that again at IMFL..

Did my first Half distance 70.3 in Maine. Water temps 61 degrees!!!! Glad I had a wetsuit.
Took it really easy, never bonked, kept going and going and going. I guess the training is paying off.

Im wondering for the course being flat in Florida compared to New England if it would be beneficial to change the cassette.

Any suggestions. I currently have a Trek Madone with aerobar . Compact Crank 50/34 and Cassette12-30 10 speed, Would this suffice or would I be
better off with something else. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks so much.

My ironman nutrition for IMMT in Aug was a disaster and left me vomiting on the run, any IM veterans have any advice for FL. I plan on using 2 bottles infinit for electrolytes, but I have no plan as of yet for my extra calories to reach 300-350/ hour. Last race I used EFS liquid shot, but that did not work, so I need a plan B. Thanks Jim

I used EFS shots last year as well fro IM Arizona and it seemd to work, tho I only could drink 1.5 bottles on the bike only tho....I'm sticking to Chomps Perform water the 1st 2 hours on bike, than 2 cliff bars the hours 3-4 (perform and water) and efs shots th rest of the way until run.....On run chomps water and gu perform up to mile 10 than eat everythign they are offering after

i simply use clif bloks for electrolytes, a couple breakfast bars, and bananas that they hand out on the course. ...and drink lots of water each time i take in some food so it doesn't sit there. that works for me. --but everyone is different so use your long rides to dial it in.

You won't need the 30 on the cassette, but I don't think you will spin out either, since there aren't any big downhills. You should be fine.
The only reason to change would be to have more options in the middle by moving to a 25-11 or a 25-12.

Jim, give some more details about your bike and run nutrition as well as hydration at IMMT.
Also, did you practice it on your long rides, and if so, how did it work.

I have found that I tend to do better on the lower end of the recommendations, but that varies for each person and race.

Here is the plan that has worked best for me:
4-5 hours before race eat 400-600 calories (often need an alarm for this)
1-2 hours before- eat 100-200 calories, mostly carbs

Eat big in T1, right onto bike-I like Snickers bars and pop-tarts. Although I have been told I could make better choices.
On bike, most of my nutrition is liquid. I have used carbo-pro and perpetuem (perpetuem gives me gas later in the race). Usually I load up a bottle with 600 calories.
I also use shot blocks and gu gels on the bike.
Total bike is nutrition is maybe 800-1000 calories.

Run is whatever keeps me happy. Coke, pretzels, etc. Whatever.

I am 6ft 210lbs. I have finished in the 12:30's in 3 races and was 12:50 at IM Cozumel last year.

I went mostly liquid only at MT, I had a bagel/PB while setting bike up, prior to start I had a bottle with EFS Ultragen and Infinit mix and half a EFS Liquid Shot flask. After swim Ihhad a bottle of Ensure. On the 1st loop of bike, 2 24 oz Infinit bottles and 1 and a half Liquid Shot Flasks. I also had 3 cliff shot blocks and 2 24 oz water from the aid stations. I planned on the same for the second loop, about 10 miles into the 2nd loop I felt queasy and stopped bike. I vomited uncontrollably for about 5 minutes until I was dry heaving. I felt a little better and started riding again. I took in some Infinit and water, a few miles later, I was on the side of the road again. I repeated this process for the rest of the bike. 2:48 1st loop, 3:50 2nd loop.

The run was mostly the same, I tried everything, coke, water perform, ice only. It did not matter, it all came back up. Medical tried to pull me from the race, but I refuse medical care and continued. (I had to sign a waiver to continue). I finished the run in 5 hours, 3:50 is a normal IM run for me.

I finished the race in 13:10 about 2 hours longer than my other IM races. I am at a complete loss as to what I did wrong, I just know I don't want to repeat it at IMFL. I hope that is enough info for you,

I never had any trouble in training with nutrition, but I never did a swim/bike brick. Plenty of bike/run bricks. I usually swam after a long bike or run.

So Sorry you had trouble....I did read thru the responses below.

1-Be sure your infinite mix was correct.  I know more than one person who had their races ruined because they got sent the wrong formulation esp if that is what you are used to using
2-How hot was it and do you think that was a factor?  Last year IMFL was warm but typically it is cold so factor that in.  I tell people to be prepared for anything.
3-It doesn't take much space to carry some extra electrolyte tablets with you if you think that was an issue.  I put mine in a tic tac box.  Like I said IMFL is usually cold but if you can take 2 hours off your time carrying a few electrolyte tabs if you need them well worth it
4-I also put TUMS in my bento box........also worth the less than an ounce in weight and if things are going well you can always throw them off
5-Personally I am a fan of real vs manufactured food but not everyone has an iron stomach like I do. Seriously I could eat a tuna melt on the bike and be fine.  I use twizzlers.  They are cheep, yummy, easily available, don't melt and you can cut them in 1/2 and they fit just dandy in a bento box
6-I also use accelerade as my sports drink of choice but I switch to water after a while.  I have uses lava salts and lava salt powder with great success ( I am a heavy sweater and a salty sweater..........I have turned over 10% of my body weight on long rides
7-Practice what you might use
8-Have plan A B and C
9-Consider living off the course.  I eat a lot of bananas off the course on race day but since I live in a hot place not practical for training. I KNOW a banana in the back pocket of my jersey that I have been sweating on for 5 hours in 100 degree heat would be SO appealing to everyone....NOT!!!

I am not fast like you but I am smart and I am a sports doctor.   I have read and studied a great deal on this stuff and what I know is

1-There is no one right nutrition hydration plan that will work for everyone
2-you need to find what works for your body
3-You need fluids, electrolytes and carbohydrates.  It doesn't matter how those three things are packaged.  Can be candy or a gel, but you need to figure out what you can tolerate
4-If you are sick on the bike you are kind of hosed for the mary
5-Its best to maintain euhydration on the bike if you can and get calories in on the bike.  Once you loose 2% of your body weight you LOOSE PERFORMANCE.  I always love it when people think they are heroes because they collapsed at the finish and lost whatever amount of weight or ran til the puked and pushed so hard or whatever when I know they raced stupid and could have done much better if they had had a good hydration plan.  DU-OH
6-Keep it simple.
7- Race smart

Would be happy to help you or anyone with this stuff........post here or PM me.   There are so many things that can happen during a 140 mile race.  I have read SO SO many race reports and the 2 major places people fall down THAT THEY CAN CONTROL  are 1-nutriton and 2-mental attitude.  Hope this helps   Yeah I am excited.............yeah I can barely run but whatever   High five me when you lap me OK

So, what was your nutrition like at other IMs? Did you change a bunch? Also, how much Ocean swimming have you done. I got a little queasy at cozumel because I drank more of the ocean than I had planned on.

Thanks for the advice, I did take in a good amount of water on the swim as i was in the middle of a scrum for a while. I did not think that would matter much, but maybe it was part of the problem. I switched to EFS Liquid Shots this race as I was having a few cramping issues in prior IM's. If I had it to do over, I would rather cramp up a bit than sit on the side of the road sick as a dog. I think I'm going to try Infinit with Carbpro on my long training days and see how that goes. It seems people do OK with Carbpro and an electrolyte drink mix.

That is interesting about the EFS connection.  I did a local IM distance race the same day as IMMT and had a similar problem, although never reached your level.  I used EFS drink and gel at the race as well.  But I had some of a peanut butter sandwich later in the bike than I think I should of in hindsight and thought it might have been that.  For me it was just nausea and a tight stomach whenever I would try to run.  I had used the EFS for 3 HIM over the prior months without incident, but I did get a new supply of both in the weeks before the long race.

Anyways, next week starts the specific build for FL and I am looking forward to focusing on that race.  I am going to try a couple of different nutrition strategies though!

Not an IM vet but am an Infinit user. After 3 bags my favorite bike mix is 310 cal/serving which is working good so far for me by itself. Occasionally I'll have some gummi worms in my jersey pocket but that's mostly because I'm a fatty who really likes candy. The run I plan to just live off the course, lately I'm a sucker for coke on the run. Just got back from a "keeping the sanity while training" vacation and time to hit training hard. First 100 mile ride is next Sunday

@kenj- is that Stingray City in Grand Cayman? Just got back from there yesterday
