Extreme Veteran 494 Olympia, WA | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Originally posted by soretaint Originally posted by citaltfort Originally posted by soretaint I'm envious of all your great monthly totals you guys! Keep up the great work! Ankle surgery is tomorrow and I'm hoping for a speedy recovery in order to salvage some races a bit later in the Summer this year. Cheers! How did the surgery go? They found quite a bit more damage than the MRI showed.....hence the reason it hurt like a bugger.. Problem is that I won't be allowed to run for several months instead of several weeks.. If the surgery is a success (time will tell) I will hopefully be able to run again in Aug/Sept. I should be able to start swimming/biking again before too very long, I'm hoping. Looks like "racing" will be put off until 2015 if all goes well. Frustrating!! Let's hope they found and fixed everything they needed to fix. It'll be tough being patient, but do your best to let things heal and you'll be back rolling. Hopefully, by next year this will all be just a memory and you'll be having a great racing year. |

Veteran 190 Lakeville, Minnesota | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread I was reading a race report from last years race and the author mentioned something about a couple of no passing zones on the bike, on the ramp to the freeway and on a downhill/bridge are around mile 46 or so. I looked at last years athlete guide and didn't see any mention of no passing zones. Anybody have any more info on them? I'm just curious so I know when to tell people to stop passing me… One other question about the run, is the 331 feet of gain shown on the Ironman CDA site pretty accurate for the 26.2 miles? Thanks, Mike |

Member 85 Chicago | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread I would not worry about the no-passing zones (and even if not mentioned in the athlete guide I dont see how they will remove those w/o changing the bike route completely). That area most folks are slowed down pretty well as it is so fairly well spread out (it does not come at the bottom of a downhill etc so no mass of bikes coming to screeching halts at a bottleneck). The only part that it was even slightly congested for me is on the way out on the first loop. That portion however is after a small climb (the on ramp) and a sharp left to go over the bridge/no passing zone. Again no one has much speed there and even the folks who came out of the water and just hammered on their bike (ie the folks you'll be passing) have had 10 miles or so behind them at this point..so no mavericks that I ran into. Thats my experience at last years anyhow. Not sure on the run but it seems fairly accurate. For the most part a reasonably flat run with the exception of the turnaround point. Anyhow, hope that helps. Typing this up on the fly so please forgive sloppiness. |

Member 92 Rose Lake, Idaho | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread I hear ya on Bennet Bay hill.....but then you have a quick turn around and a 10k back to the finish line. I just get goose bumps at that point because I can visualize the finish with hundreds of people cheering. I did well mentally in breaking down the marathon into 4 10Ks.....by the end of my training...10ks are nothing. Visualizing 26 miles was NOT. |

Veteran 930 Morgan Hill, California | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Another week down, realization hit me this morning on how close we are getting. Looking at those Strava segments of the hill on the run is going to encourage me to continue to run the hills. My lunch training run is fairly hilly, so that hopefully is helping. Did a flat long run this weekend, and I think and hope that those hills are helping my run. Thinking about how many more weekends we have left, and its seems like its not that many. Lots of work left to be done, but really will be here before we know it. |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread The run is pretty flat with a hill you hit twice at the turn around. It really isn't anything like Vineman or other more challenging run courses. If you are in shape to run the mary at the end, you will be fine. Worst case, you decide to walk the hill on the 2nd lap. |

Veteran 930 Morgan Hill, California | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Ok, true confession of my embarrassing stupidity. Out on my ride today, stop to relief myself. Lean bike up against post to run over to bushes. Think bike is secure against post. Turn my back and hear bike fall over, hoping worst is that rear derailleur is knocked out of whack. Shifting ok as I start out, then notice big ding on top tube. Further investigation reveals big crack in top tube. No idea what it hit, but top tube definitely cracked. That is going to be an expensive pit stop. Totally bummed by my complete stupidity. Probably will end up just putting aero bars on my road bike. |

Veteran 493 Cloverdale, BC | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Kmac, most carbon frames can be repaired. A crack in the top tube is one of the easier places to fix. Talk to your local bike shop and see if they can refer you to someone. |

I know it could be fixed, but I'm just not sure I want to sink that money into this bike. Its older, so not sure if it would be worth it. But, that may be an option for sure. Just have to get over being an idiot and figure out what I can do. |

Member 87 | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread kmac -- Oh, man. I'm so sorry. Bad timing. Good luck getting 'er fixed. Hope it all works out. Nine weeks, five days, 22 hours. But who's counting? Training is going well, if maybe a bit more sporadic than I'd hoped. Biked from Boise to McCall, ID on Friday. 105 miles. Last ten were a cruel trifecta of hills, wind and chipseal. Thought about just abandoning the bike, hitching the rest of the way, and begging for food. Some days I am very confident. Most days I am not. I think that's good. And an American won Boston today! Fitting tribute. Boston Strong. |

Expert 1535 Coeur D'alene, ID | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread I was out on the lake today and the water temp off City Beach was a balmy 46. Coming up slowly but there's plenty of time. A lot of the run off is done now so shouldn't have too much more cold water coming into the lake. No worries by race day, should be in the 60's no problem. |

Member 92 Rose Lake, Idaho | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Scored my first Open Water Swim of the Season yesterday on Rose lake. Water Temp was 53. First swim is always the hardest, but I got to get out of that damn pool. Put in one mile. Wont go further until my body acclimates. Will try again Saturday. Bass Tournament fisherman kept sayin I was crazy. Maybe true. |

Veteran 930 Morgan Hill, California | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Decided not to fix my tri bike, will ride my roadie. I've got a nice road bike, a Venge I bought last year, so its not like its a real sacrifice. I've got thousands of miles on it, so I know it well. May put some clip on aero bars on, but maybe not. Decided to just commit to riding that bike and take any distraction away from myself. Will test it in a race next weekend at Wildflower HIM. Looking forward to that. Can't believe April is now almost done. Hope everyone is feeling good, one more big month to push. At least, I've always looked at June as being mostly a taper month, but I know there will be at least a good 10 days of training there at the beginning of the month. |

Regular 389 | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread It's getting closer for sure. I went to Boston Marathon for a week (spectator for gf) and my time in the pool has dropped. Need to get rocking over the next 8weeks. I did say prior to this IM I wasn't going to freak out about missing a w/o here and there like in my past IM's so that's the way it is. Tom |

Extreme Veteran 487 Spokane, WA | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread One month post ankle surgery and today was the first day without crutches... I was able to swim twice this week and went for a, mostly one legged, short bike ride tonight. Progress!! I won't be able to run until August, but I'll work on everything else as I'm able. I haven't applied for a refund yet, so I'm actually considering making the start line at CdA and doing the swim and maybe one loop of the bike before pulling out. At least I'd get a bit of experience that I could apply to another IM when I get completely healthy again...... |

Maryland? Something further in the distance that gives you ample time to heal? |
