I was going to just go with what the Pod said because I'm late to the party. (darn that work getting in the way of BT!) I don't think that adding time to your already schedule bike rides will have the same effect as the 4 hour ride. I would try to get the long run in though since you took last weekend easy on the running. Maybe do the 90 minutes on Friday instead of the 60? How dare work get in the way of such important BT stuff!! I definitely will get the run in since last weekend was a really bad running week, but it looks now like because of the Taste of Chicago going on the office is letting us take extra time to go... well, instead of going to the Taste, I'll do my long ride! If you want to drop one, that would be fine but it shouldn't be necessary to drop more than that. My main piece of advice is to mix up the distances. In other words, don't train your body that a bike ride = 90 minutes. |

Oh, that would be saaaaahweeeet. 400s bring a special, special kinda pain. F n A. Ha I know, right? I know I can run a fast warm up 400 in like, 80 so I dunno about an all out. But the 4x4 isn't too much before the 5000 so I'd be more running it as a fast quarter for prep. I want to do well in the 5000 but I'm kinda just playin' around because this shyte is fun! You people that like running are weird! |

Ta da! Problem solved? So no need to ask us then, haha! Since it sounds like much (if not all) of the planned biking in here is primarily getting time in the saddle, you can move it around how you like as it's the total you put in. We've said that about running, but it's even more true on the bike. Do make sure the other nearby workouts won't be affect much though. What you get out of putting that time into the big rides (like that 4 hr one) would be more for familiarity of going that long at once, how it affects your body and energy level. Building up support things like arms, shoulders neck, especially in the aero position. But for power development, get the time in. Running is different because of the impact, or the loading from when you land. So making sure to build up the long run there is more important than for the bike. Having said that about moving the time on the bike, if there are stronger efforts anywhere in there, those tend work better when spread out. Not so much because of injury, it's hard to actually hurt yourself biking, but for the type of development. When going harder, you want to be working at about the right level to stimulate the right adaptations for what you're after. If you're tired, the workout may still feel (just as) hard, but you'll be working at a lower output level than you should and not get the intended response later. The same training adaptations won't happen. Edited by brigby1 2013-07-10 12:58 PM |

Master 7712![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Orlando | Subject: RE: Mad Manatee Mentors 2013: CLOSED (exc/ Pop Tart bribes)Originally posted by jmkizer Ok, consider my answer changed.Originally posted by blueyedbikergirl Originally posted by amd723 Originally posted by blueyedbikergirl Originally posted by brigby1 Originally posted by blueyedbikergirl Hi Manatees... I have a training question! This weekend I'll be in NY as Tony is doing the NY tri which will mean some sightseeing Saturday, watching the race Sunday, getting together Sunday night, then flying back at stupid o'clock Monday morning to get to work and then doing a fun 5km race with some friends Monday night. On to the training question... I'm supposed to have a 4hr bike ride Saturday and a 1.5hr run Sunday which isn't going to happen over the weekend. Should I try to smoosh them in somewhere over the next 3 days? If so... do I bag the workouts that are already planned during the week, or do I try to find a way to get ALL the workouts done? What else do you have planned for workouts over the next few days? And would there be other time constraints as 4 hrs is usually a rather big chunk of time for most. Also, was there anything in particular about these rides besides getting in a bunch of time on the bike? Thinking more pacing or effort related. Biking has more flexibility in how things can be shuffled around, but want to make sure of goals for the workouts before doing so. Today is a 45min bike/30min run brick Thursday is a 1hr bike (at 100+rpm) and a 3500m swim workout Friday is a 1hr run (with strides/Z4 stuff thrown in at some point) and a 3500m swim workout The 4hr bike (with a 30min run brick afterward) is probably just to make sure that I get the T.I.T.S. leading up to B2B, but I really noticed the lack of long rides for IMAZ last year and would really like to try and hit as many of the workouts as I can. Whaddya think? Keep in mind that this advise is probably as good as what you've paid for it, but I think you are probably far enough out from your race that you could miss the long bike and not be negatively impacted. However, I would probably still try to get it in v doing the other workouts for the week. I reserve the right to change my answer to whatever Janyne says Ha! That's usually what I do too! I think I really just don't like the thought of missing ANY workouts (last year was an unmitigated disaster in terms of sticking to a training plan) but I also know that sometimes life just gets in the way and I have to accept it, begrudgingly. Ah poo. |

Master 10208![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Northern IL | Subject: RE: Mad Manatee Mentors 2013: CLOSED (exc/ Pop Tart bribes)Originally posted by Asalzwed Originally posted by 4agoodlife Random things around here: Yesterday in yoga, after being pulled out to change a dirty diaper BEFORE I'd even sat down, I noticed we had about 12 people (biggest class yet) and one of them was my neighbor across the street. Cool! Then the instructor was new to me, she usually does Wednesdays, and she had REAL music: Adele, GnR, Pink, etc. Really cool! She gave lots of feedback and made pose corrections, and just generally moved things along quickly as she layered the poses. I'd really like to do her class, but I've been going T/Th and not sure about doing a back to back days. Pod yogi thoughts? Got sitter again for this weekend. Another long ride to come, and hopefully we'll over and back on the mountain if the weather cooperates. So I have this bike leg of a HIM in Oct...was thinking of getting a training "schedule" together that is bike intensive. It's 15ish weeks out I think. I looked at the BT 20 wk 1/2 Iron plan and it doesn't seem like much. I'm doing about 5 hours per week now...3 steady, 2 interval. Now we're starting longer weekend rides, so I'll drop one of the weekdays. Should I drop more? Any of you experienced planner types have advice? IMHO I think Yoga is low impact enough you could do it as many days in a row as you could handle. Also, biking is pretty low impact as well. Shoot, when I worked at a PT office in college they had peple on the bike the day of a full knee replacement. You can do a lot of biking, hard biking even and, unlike running, not be at risk for injury. I think it's all going to depends on what your schedule can handle. The bigger the T.I.T.S. the better. Again IMHO Yoga doesn't have the impact like running, but do pay attention to your body and also to the types of classes you do. You might very well be working areas that don't get much attention otherwise and will all the sudden have a big load placed on them. There are different styles of yoga and variations from one instructor to the next too. Some can work you harder while others will be more relaxing. I don't think there is automatically an issue doing back to back, just watch for things like this. And per the biking, you can build that up a lot faster than something like running. How much other activity would you have? Fitting in the swimming & running are what would keep the biking from building up fast early on for the beginner plans. Both learning to schedule the workouts in and getting used to the overall training load. And especially with the weekday stuff, many find this to be the better time to push oneself, usually through various intervals. I almost never just ride on these. Most all of them will have some amount over "moderate". Usually "comfortably hard" to "hard". The bigger rides on the weekend might have a lower effort, but they might also have some pushing, depends on how I'm feeling. |

I did do an actual cool down walk after yesterday's bike / run brick. I can't seem to "run" slower than 9:00 minutes. Not bragging.. I just find it difficult to slow down to much. If I understand right - I should go run about 5 - 10 minutes "slow" to warm up - then start my run right? (I'm trying, I promise) |
