And a friend just posted this to my FB page, so this is a huge relief. Does anyone know anything about induced comas and why they do it? I don't think the nurse they are referencing here is my friend -- she was in and out pretty quickly as more and more people came to his aid -- but I will ask her if she started mouth-to-mouth:

Emergency medical attention was required when a male runner collapsed within feet of the Rotary Half-Marathon finish line on Sunday. According to Sam Sullivan, director of the Mercer Island Rotary Run, as of March 22, the man was still hospitalized in an induced coma but breathing on his own. Doctors are optimistic for a good recovery.

"The fact that an ER nurse was right there [at the finish line] and started CPR immediately was very fortuitous," Sullivan said. "There was also a spectator, a woman, who jumped the barricade and administered mouth to mouth."

In all of the emergency chaos, Sullivan said that nobody identified the ER nurse, a race participant, who resuscitated the man. His family is asking anyone who might know the nurse's name to report it, so they can thank him personally.

I worked in hospitals for years as a psychologist. Spent a lot of time in ERs and ICUs. Not exactly "medically" trained, but I did learn a few things while there. I could be totally off-base, but a lot of the time the Drs. will keep the patient in a medically induced coma if the pain level the patient experiences is too much for them to handle when awake, such as a burn patient. They will also induce coma when there's swelling in the brain to relieve pressure and prevent brain damage. It's almost always used when they put someone on the ventilator....but in this guy's case they said he was breathing on his own, so it's obviously not that. Dunno...might ask your nurse friend if she would know. Sounds like the guy either stroked-out, had a horrible, life threatening seizure, or had a brain aneurism.

The first time I witnessed someone having to be defibbed it really freaked me out. It's a very violent looking procedure and frankly between the defib and the CPR it looks like the patient is being assaulted.  It took me a while to get over it initially, so no surprise that you're traumatized. I got used to it after a while, but it's never pretty. Sorry you had to witness it, especially when you were out having fun doing what you love. The memory will fade with time.... Big hugs to you!

a 3.8 and you're concerned!?! don't let it bother you!  b's are great.  think of getting that golden tassel similar to finding a golden ticket.  as a professor and a boss or if i ever own a chocolate factory, i'll take a charlie over an augustus or a veruca or a violet any day.  heck, in many cases i'll take a 3.0 over a 4.0.

you're on the quarter system?  interesting.

and if you're reading this get off BT and go get your work done!  now!

LOL! (I know it's been a couple days since I read the forums...homework takes priority and training take second. BT takes third. I think I got the priorities straight, sorry for the late reply).

To the males with no leg or chest hair--how do you do it? and does it look like you don't have hair there or do you see stubble?  I look the no hair look a lot Wink.  If you solve this issue for me, I don't need to ask Steve next week when he is here!

No secret here... I steal Kim's Razor and that fruity smelling shaving cream and get after it....  We often compare legs to see who's are smoother.  NO STUBBLE!!! NOT COOL (although I slip a little in the winter)!

Oh there is definitely a battle over razors and shaving gel in our house.  Tony keeps using up my Trader Joe's Mango shaving gel in the shower.  Bast*rd!

Of course John, it has nothing to do w/ speed.  If you spend several weeks ripping hair out of your leg that is stick to bandages from road rash, you might shave your legs too!

I'm just going on a hunch here, but I'm guessing Tony does it not so much for the clear hair/road rash thing, but for the  Mango shaving gel.

I have officially closed the door on my "not training for anything" excuse.  Just registered for an Olympic that is in 10 WEEKS!   Guess momma better get her butt moving!!!!  Currently I can do the distance in the pool, but the time is deplorable, I'll make the 25 miles but the idea of running a 10k off the bike is daunting right now.  But this will be the first time I get to race the new Equinox!!!!!    Very excited!

Well laying the bike down was the original reason (see my album 1st wreck...)

But now it just looks cool.

Also, you wouldn't believe how much easier it is now to put sunscreen on.

Give yourself the treat of doing some bricks in the next few weekends.  You'll be fine.  This race will be great for you.  You will be pulling everything out from past experiences to help you succeed!

Birdy:  to the degree none of us appreciated it before, you are TRULY hardcore.  From your post, the title of this pic is "Cabin", which appears to refer to the loose collection of sticks/lean-to on the right side of the picture.

I know you love to hike in the snow up Mt. Hood, etc.   But, if you treat that collection of sticks as your "cabin", all I can say is that, MAN, I am impressed.

Tracy- It's weekend like this that make MONDAYS happy days.   I have TOTALLY been there.  Sometimes we just survive (or they do) by the skin of their teeth.

As for the list, I'm 1-4, 6,7, 9 and 10.  Guess I stick out like a sore thumb. LOL

tahrens - 2010-03-22 12:51 PM Thanks for all the support guys.  I knew I could count on you.  I needed that.  I know everyone with kids goes through these days,  guess I've been getting off too easy and got them all strung together.

On a happier note, I made a few observations at the marathon this weekend.

HOW TO SPOT A TRIATHLETE AT A MARATHON:

1. shaved legs - obvious
2. compression gear - anyone with compression calf sleeves had shaved legs - nothing on the hairy guys.  Heck, they barely had any clothes on at all
3.  Garmins
4. race belts - runners pin the number to their shorts
5. fuel belts (sometimes in combination with race belts)
6. YANKS
7.  previous race gear (ex. IM hats, shirts) - lots of "runners" were sporting cotton t's or bare chested.  It was 45 degrees for goddness sakes
8.  Said "I need more cowbell" to me
9.  thanked the police officers and volunteers (I don't mean that runners didn't but everyone that I knew who was a triathlete said thank you - that made me proud)
10. were not the top 10 gazelles winning the race
