I will be registering for Augusta after the first of the year...as soon as some $$$$ comes in. Awesome. Steve 10:4 on Augusta! I am planning on the Gulf Coast HIM as well as Augusta again this year. Chris, are you going to do Augusta or will it interfere with IMKY? Who we got? Barry, Doug, Steve,, ??????Tracy,Linda, John, Chris, Tony/Sam????? I am up the air right now. I would love to do it, but it is only four weeks after IMKY, so I doubt it will happen. Since we have a few BTers going, I might go cheer you guys on and hand out beer - ummm, John, Andy. Did you hear that? I said I will be handing out beer! Things could change though. I could just go out and try to just barely make the cut offs! |

My current glasses are 10 years old and are held together with string and a bent sewing pin. Also they told me I need to go to my regular Dr. because they think I have High Blood pressure. YAY ME! I am most proud of the level of dedication I was able to keep in training in 2009. In my current position at work, I am there during crazy hours (all weekends and holidays). Because of this, other than this group, I had noone to there pushing me, holding me accountable, etc. It was just me. That is why this group is important to me. Even though, there isn't any body there waiting for me at 6am to run, I know if I missed a scheduled workout, there would be someone here encouraging me along, or kicking my butt out the door. Sam and Tony - I have never played the Kohler courses, but would love to. Two of the facilities I want to play are the Kohler courses and the courses at Bandon Dunes in Oregon. I am playing Augusta National this spring, so I can cross that off my list. In case anyone needs a little incentive to sign up for the Augusta HIM, I will throw in a round of golf in the Greenville area if anyone is interested. It's only two hours from Augusta. Does that include cart? HA Welcome back Chris. Good to see you again. And congrats on the distinction. Thanks Trevor. It's good to be back. Cart is on me! |

Follow up on my physical therapy saga......got a second opinion and re-assesment (owner of the clinic I go to) here is my laundry list......1) twisted lumbar vertebra (either from birthing such freakin' thanksgiving turkeys or slight scholeosis (sp?) 2) soft tissue and muscle issues in right hip and butt, 3) tightness in left hip joint with severe loss of range of motion 4) tight nerve causing pain at right knee 5) weak pelvic and transverse core muscles 6) scar tissue build up on left calf 7) tight joints in left foot and ankle. He did a deep tissue treatment to break through the scar tissue on calf - OMG!!! PAIN!!!!!!!! Said I will be sore tomorrow and wants me to do a tough workout on Saturday to try and reproduce any calf and/or hip pain. Isn't life just peachy! WOW, it makes my injury update look rather boring in comparison. Does he have an order to work on all these issues? Got back from Sports Med doctor. We are doing a bonescan on Monday to rule in/out the stress fracture. He thinks no, PT thinks yes, all I say is let me start running! If no fracture, it could either be a neuroma or metatarsalgia, but either would allow me to start a walk/run program sooner (me talking....). We did another round of prolo, only 10 or so injections this time and threw in the left ITB that was causing me problems before all this happened (40 hits here--fun). Everything hurts so that is a good sign and hopefully it will have some benefit. Off to drown my sorrows...... |

Are you taking in any calories on the prior miles, and water? Do you eat before a long run? I ask, because I had been notorious for not really eating before long runs, haphazard gu at the six mile point, etc. Once I started making it a point to eat at least 90 min before a long run (for me two pieces of peanut butter toast and banana) and drink some water with that. Gu or half banana 15 min before run with a gulp of water. On the run itself, water every 15 minutes ( just a gulp or so) and Gu at 45 or 60 min then half gu every 30 minutes after that. Less fatigue, keeps glycogen levels up and less likely to bonk. Try it! No charge for the "therapy" ![]() |

I did my one and only marathon last January (Disney) using the Galloway run/walk method and it worked great. My time was terrible but there other factors that lead to that. This time my goal is to run the distance and if I absolutely have to walk it will be at the water stops ONLY. That is the plan and that is the way I am going about my training. Real excited about the training and hope we have a mild winter here so that I can keep up the schedule.....and YES, I know the winters in Atlanta are nothing compared to you guys up north but I make no apologies. I am a wuss when it comes to the cold. Spent 30 years as a fireman and was cold all of the time from Nov.-Feb. and now that I don't HAVE to be cold...I'm NOT gonna be. ![]() Steve Nice job on the run! Robert |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() William--- 60 oz. of Gatorade seems like a lot to me. Then again it all depends on sweat levels, weather, etc. Everyone is slighty different in this aspect. For me on a 13 mile run I am good w/ 2 GU, and 1 bottle of water (2 things-- Not too hot here, and I don't sweat much). Play around with it. There plenty of other nutritions out there besides GU. The cockpit is all set up w/ the new SRAM shifters, brakes levers, and crankset.... Now all I need to do is get the engine working!!! (ME!).... I'm thinking I just might do the oly and use it as training like you all suggested as it does seem to fit nicely into my training plan! I don't know what it is about swimming that scares me so much ~ I guess maybe cuz its the one thing that doesn't come naturally/fairly easy to me! I know I need to just get my butt in the water more often as I'm not sure there's any purple on my graph in the last few weeks but I just have such a hard time forcing myself to get in the pool! But, nevertheless, trust me when I say that my body has PLENTY of fat from which to draw. I would like to figure out how to get around that corner. Thanks Hey William Lots going on in the note above, but I highlighted the points that seem most relevant to me: 1. Lets talk :"I want to learn to burn fat stores on long runs" and "I have plenty of fat...": It might suprise you that even an athlete with 5% Bodyfat has enough fat to go a very long way in an endurance event. The key is making sure you have glyocgen left in your body to work with the fat....burning fat as fuel by itself WILL NOT WORK WELL! You always want a little glycogen to get the fat stores fully accessed. If you run out of glyogen that is when you starting feeling lethargic and it makes it difficult to run. You may think it is psychological, but it is also a physical response. What Kim writes above is a good strategy so is taking in carbohydrates at a perscribed rate to ensure you are never fully depleted. I can give you some literature on calculating this if you would find it helpful. It took me 6 marathons before I finally figured what worked for me. Now I feel like I am bullet proof for marathons (still learning for tris). It is also important to consider your HR during these long training runs/races. The higher your HR, the more glycogen you burn relative to fat. Running a 5K at above your LT will definitely be taking glycogen not fat for fuel. Your goal as a long distance athlete is to maintan a HR that allows you to access both. As you become more attuned to your body's caloric requirements you can play with less nutrition on your long runs to encourage greater fat burning capability. After my first couple of years of running, I incorporated the concept into some of my long runs. It is hard on the body, takes you longer to recover, but I believe it had some benefit for me. Since transitioning to triathlon I have stopped doing it. It is a controversial concept. Some coaches love it, others hate it. Mine is not supportive. 2. Pacing: You do not mention anything about your strategy during the runs/races when you are having these issues. Do you feel you start out too fast and then are reduced to walking because you have gone over your training paces? what is going on with your HR during these times? It is my experience you cannot run a race at a pace/HR you have not trained for...not saying this is your issue, more asking about your protocol. 3. Physcology plays a huge role in endurance sports. Half of my success in qualifying for Boston three times was mental conditioning. Your brain has to have tactics to draw upon when the going gets tough, otherwise that little voice wreaks havoc on your performance. I recommend the book Running Within to any athlete who is questioning themselves and breaking down due to things other than physical training. Finally, all questions are important so never feel like you are turning the MG into something it isn't. Someone else in our group asked a simliar question last time around and someone else was probably wondering about the same thing....that is the beauty of the dynamic of the group.
