Endurance is my forte and I'm really good at holding a steady pace for a long time; tend to really struggle with the high intensity of sprint and sometimes Only (cramping and especially nausea). Those issues are a lot less with HIM most of the time if I pace properly. I would definitely like to do a full IM at some point; I think I wouldn't know until afterwards if that would be a "one and done" bucket list kind of thing, or something I'd want to do more in the future.

I think I would probably do well if I was properly prepared and no unforeseen issues with illness, nutrition, etc. Mentally it is easier if I think of it more like a long hike--I have done plenty of 12-hour days on the trail. Debating maybe trying an iron-length Aquabike (either as a race or in training) this summer, at least to get a feel for how I might feel after riding 180 km.

When I trained for IM Boulder, my coach broke my long runs up. 1 in the morning, 1 in the afternoon, and an evening run or 11-13 miles in the morning and 6 in the evening. He does that with all of his athletes, not just the pretend runners like me. He has about 5 who have Kona qualified so it does work.

I've heard of this strategy from a few athletes that are coached. Can I ask what your longest standalone run was? I find it hard to believe someone could run a solid marathon without at least 1 (probably more) 20 miler.

My longest stand alone was 15 miles on the track. It was so much fun, haha. Seriously, it was more of a mental challenge than a physical challenge.

The longest run that my Kona Q friend did was around 18 miles. Her qualifying run was 3:40.

The broken runs I had were like 30 min easy/mod in the morning. Afternoon was 3 hours mod/med with some mad. Evening was 1 hour easy or mod depending on how I was feeling.

15 miles on a track - WOW! a 3:40 with 18 miles in training sounds reasonable. I ran a standalone 3:40 (my 1 and only marathon) after hitting 13.1 in 1:35. My last 5 miles were a very long and painful slog to say the least. Unfortunately I'm in the 35 - 39 male age group which pretty much means unless I'm running close to 3:00 flat KQ is out of the question.

A little bit of frustration tonight. I went to ride my bike (on the trainer) and the back tire was flat. I filled it up and it immediately went flat. I decided to change the tube, switched it out tested the new tube and it wouldn't fill. Pulled it out and it was split.
I'm hoping the LBS (Walmart) is carrying the right tube.

That's irritating! I swear there are days when the exercise gods are testing my commitment. I'm obviously not the only person they target.

Someone less committed would've taken it as a sign to take the night off. Good for you for pressing on!

Changing the tube would have been my workout

The first time I fixed a flat, it took 3 tubes and 2+ hours (30 min. was a trip to the LBS to buy more tubes). I was determined to fix it all. by. myself. instead of waiting for my husband to come home and fix it for me. By the time I finished, there was no way in hello kitty I wasn't going out to ride. I'm definitely not always that tenacious! :P

Running shorts.

Any of the guys out there run in tracksmith shorts? Despite my usually system of glide and running with extra Vaseline I got a good chaffing doing on my 2nd marathon last month. Used the same system as my first marathon when I had no problems (or minimal). For these races I ran in Nike distance shorts. Looking to try something different.

Any other recommendations?

Finally got a race on the calendar

3/3 Azalea Sprint, looking at doing the White lake sprint and Oly in April for those also racing in the NC Tri Series.

the White lake races look great, I’ve considered them too, but I don’t know that my car can go anywhere in NC but western NC

obviuosly, I’m not here to answer your question, just wanted to comment that I didn’t know you could put a subject in your post in this group! When I saw the email, I didn’t recognize it as a manatee post. Thanks for the education!

I run with shorts that have a sewn in liner, unless it's a tri, then tri shorts. I find them the most comfortable for running and glide works fine for longer runs. They have fewer friction spots.
I did use anti-monkey butt for my first marathon. I still got monkey butt, fortunately you named the post TMI, because I think succeeded.

Bizarre to me that your post would be considered TMI in this forum. Guess it was simply the use of the word "chafing??" Having never run more than a 15k, I can't offer any recommendations. Just had to chime in on the TMI flag.

8 hour drive. See you there, right?

Seriously, as much as I like White Lake, surely there's something closer to you that is nice. The upside is that the lake is wonderful. The downside is that the accommodations are pretty sparse. I'll probably round trip it from Raleigh (1:45 away).

Maybe to do with the location of the chafing?

Must be, and I'd certainly understand if he had gone into more detail. Just seems like a common issue in endurance sports, and what better place to seek suggestions than a forum like this?
