Originally posted by melbo55 Sad news.  Someone did pass away at the race yesterday, which was my strong suspicion as DH and I patched and pasted together our individual sightings and experiences of the day.  Not a lot has been published about it yet, including age of the fellow, but here's the little news snippet:

http://www.whptv.com/news/local/story/Coroner-investigating-death-during-Catfish/g6qu_qxRQ0uSWWOA91S5qg.cspx?rss=50

Sadly I also got word from friends doing Musselman that someone died Saturday during the Mini Mussel on the bike leg and another racer was seriously injured on Sunday, also on the bike leg (edited to add my friends weren't hurt, it was people we don't know): http://www.fingerlakesdailynews.com/news/details.cfm?clientid=16&id=85227#.UeNO7W3l31I

Ah I hate to hear that kind of thing.

Sorry that your suspicions were confirmed.

It's important to remember all of the good things that endurance sports provide to so many other people.

Hi Manatees -so many things to catch up on, and I'm sorry if I forget anyone!

TJ - SO happy that your son made his connecting flight, and I hope that his bike makes it with him to his destination

Chris - I'm glad you're okay after your crash on the bike, the bike can be replaced - you're much more important!

Kate - Shanti sounds like she was one of the special ones, and I'm sorry you had to let her go.

Yanti - um... nice 'work' with the strength and sport workouts lately.

Mel - I don't know what to say other than to offer my thoughts and well-wishes to you and to the families of those that passed away.  This kind of news is so saddening when juxtaposed against all the good things that training and endurance sports do for a person.

Kirstin - I can't wait to read all about your race report from one of my all-time favourite venues and races.

To all the other Manatees - I hope you had a fabulous weekend whether you were racing or not!  (I need to go read Salty's RR to see if she hurled!!)

FYI - I'm going to suggest NOT taking the 6am flight from NY to Chicago on a Monday morning then going right to work.

Lots of coffee today.  And as a bonus, the Red Bull girls were out at lunch giving away free samples of their new flavours.  The lime is pretty good - woot!

The 5km thing tonight is going to suck big hairy donkey balls... I'm going to be so freakin' tired after work, but I paid for the d a mn thing so I might as well suck it up and get 'er done.  Besides, there's burgers and beer at the end.

NEVER a bad thing! Laughing

Your 5K will be just fine. It sucks when you are tired but just know that performance has waaay more to do with overall patterns and not so much to do with one day/night of poor sleep.

The burgers and beer will be more than enough to compensate!

Hi all, just a check in to say that I survived. Just read through the posts over the past few pages. Far too much to comment on at the moment, still feeling so tired. Slept for 11 hours after the marathon yesterday. Just a few points.....Chris, well done on landing on your body and saving the bike, remember, skin grows back Chad, that makes sense with the gliding. I can only go on what I have read (swim smooth) so any other info is all good. Kate, congrats on HM PB, and sorry about your leopard. Yanti, congrats on bagging a piglet

I'm sorry I haven't been online over this w/end, I was in a wifi/phone dead spot for most of the weekend. Thanks for all the b/day wishes for tomorrow.

What Monica said.

Also, if you are having problems clipping in.

Do you have road or mtb cleats.  My road cleats wear out faster.  For mtb cleats, you may want to break them in on the trainer or in spin class before heading out into traffic (clipping in and out rounds the corners a bit).

How well are they working? Can you get in & out easy? Feet breaking loose at all during rides? Although some cleat types say they are supposed to become more difficult to get out of as they wear. I haven't seen that yet.

Welcome back.  Remember the three Rs

* Rest

* Recover

* Race report

Wait, does that count as four Rs?

The reason I even noticed they were worn was because  on occasion (I would say 1/5 times) it's a little difficult to get into on the left side.

Nothing dramatic or anything. Although it does look like a hamster went to town and chewed the crap out of both of them haha.

OK, my shorts and shirt didn't make it through the weekend, so it is time for replacement. Two questions?

1) Which brands are people happy with?

2) Trisuit or shorts/shirt?

Thanks for all the kindness and well wishes.

Do the burgers and beer make up for the big hairy donkey balls?

Yes - particularly the alcohol.  Alcohol is so very helpful in that it tends to make you forget you're doing all kinds of things that you normally wouldn't want to do!

Thanks for all the kindness and well wishes.

Depending on the length of the race is what will determine whether I wear a trisuit or top and shorts... generally it comes down to whether I think I'm going to have to use a bathroom during the race or not.  Anything Olympic and under usually calls for the onesie, but for HIM/IM distance I like 2 pieces.  Struggling out of and back into a gross sweaty onesie (particularly if trying to perform such a feat in a port-a-loo) is NOT fun.

The trisuit I'm partial to is made by Sugoi and the two piece I WANT to get is by Betty Designs.  Though for now I use a pair of Pearl Izumi tri shorts that I LOVE for longer distance rides, and have worn a TYR tri top with it which has the pockets on the back for putting my sport chews into.
