dalessit - 2010-03-31 9:10 AM Kim,

I am afraid of sharks, so Oceanside would be tough.  I didn't forward you the article from ST where they said that someone was running in that area and saw a sea lion sitting on a rock. When they came back there was 1/2 a sea lion sitting on the rock....

As for the CT.  Do you mean the inner knobs or the outer knobs?  I have found sometime I have to undo the inner knobs until they are right up next to the outer knobs and use both sets to un-screw it.

Does that make sense.

Thank you for not forwarding that to me!  I got a little gist of it from Suzy because apparently our lovely JOHN, posted something that she thought I saw, yada, yada, yada...it's okay because I purposely avoided ST (which I normally avoid anyways   You guys would all do great on that swim, it was really calm...and not really that crowded.

Anyhow, it is the silver thing that holds either end of your training skewer (the thing that goes through the wheel?).  So one end of my training skewer, not the side you open with, but the "cap" or end that is stuck inside the silver cylinder...  Does that sort of make sense?

Oh ok so you have it open but the skewer is stuck.

Only thought is to wiggle it until it pops out. (lol that sounds dirty)

Hey everyone. Training question:

I just transitioned to a new pedal/shoe system on my bike - the Speedplay Pedal System. I've never had any problems with pain during or after a ride, but after my first training session using these pedals my lower left leg (the "gimp" one I've been having problems with) hurt like a mother. From my ankle to my knee.

Why would different pedals do this? Could it be because my foot can't move around on the pedal, and is just stuck in that one spot continuously?  Maybe it's not the pedals and just the shoes? Shoes are new, too (have cleats on them), and they have zero arch support. Has anyone ever heard of putting arch supports in their cycling shoes????

I was just using clipless pedals with cages on them and my running shoes to cycle in, but thought I'd take it a step up in preparation for my first outdoor tri. What should I do? Keep using the new shoes/pedals a few more times to see if I adjust, or pitch them and go back to the running shoes and regular pedals?

Dang, there's a lot to learn with triathlons! Surprised some west coast Univ. doesn't offer a post grad degree in Triathlon Training. I mean....they offer classes on everything else, right?

Kim:

If I understand things the non-quick-release side of your rear skewer is stuck in the cup of the trainer. Aside from wiggling the bike to disengage the skewer you might trip rapping the side of the cup gently with a hammer.

Also why not spin the quick-release side until the skewer comes out of the caught nut. Then the bike and wheel will come off and you can pry the nut out. The should be easy, especially if there is room between the outside of the nut and the bottom of the cup. A little levereage: screw driver again and a hammer if needed.

Hope that helps.

SSMinnow - 2010-03-30 1:25 PM Hey, thanks for the update...I was pretty lost over the exchanges that started last night and then gave up!!

I realize I am jumping the gun, but tomorrow is a rest day (yes, I know another one) and a travel day for me so I won't be around much.....the highlight of my month of course was returning to the running world....hope to continue that trend into April.  And I swear if I don't get my bike(s) out soon it they will disown me.

March's totals:
Bike:26h 25m  - 498.1 Mi
Run:13h 28m 14s  - 89.25 Mi
Swim:17h 44m 27s  - 41900 Yd
Strength:3h 45m

I've pretty much wrapped up March although I may a short run later.

I have no idea if my numbers are good for getting ready for Lonestar.  They seem to be about the same as last year when I was getting ready for Mooseman.  But I do feel like the quality of the workouts has been better.  And I have 2 killer weekends coming up before my taper week.

March's totals:
Bike:18h 20m 08s  - 319.06 Mi
Run:9h 51m 41s  - 55.6 Mi
Swim:7h 42m 43s  - 17600 M
Strength:2h 40m

Trina -
Not sure that new pedals in general should cause that pain.  If I remember correctly, speedplay pedals have quite a bit of float in them which should give you plenty of room to move.  That being said, if you started out in a drastically different position than what you were used to with your previous pedals, you might have some pain just from being in a different position.   Also, you could be using a different pedal stroke with these new pedals that your legs aren't used to.  The one time I rode speedplays, they didn't hurt my leg but I did get a hot spot on the bottom of my foot that caused me some pain.

I think you should give it a few more trys before you write them off.  Try and pay attention to your foot position to make sure it is not different from your platforms and make sure you are not favoring one leg over the other when pedaling.

Trina,
You should have some "float" between your shoes and your cleats with any pedal system unless you are a professional and really know your set up.  This float gives you degrees of movement, left and right, when your shoe is clipped into the pedal system.  Without this float, a couple degrees at 90 rpms can cause some major alignment issues with knees, calfs, ankles.

SO:
1.  Clip into your bike with your new shoes and cleats and see if you have any movement when you try to move your foot left and right.  If you have little or no float, you will have to adjust your float, I believe all speedplay pedals have adjustable float from 0 to 15 degrees.  There should be some directions on float adjustment with the original pedal information.   I ride purely Shimano pedals, so I am no help in this area.
2.  If you do have float, I would increase the float to maximum and try riding again.  IF you still have issue, I would say it is a cleat alignment issue.  This is another triathlon learning curve area and a possible place that you need a bike fitters input if you have never ridden clip-less before.  (for example- moving the cleat forward on the shoe will bring in more calf muscle usage into your pedal stroke and your knee alignment with your cleats is also very important)
3.  Did you buy them at your LBS or on-line?  I know my LBS offers a cleat fitting for about $25.  Usually once you get your cleats set you won't have to ever have to move them until you need new shoes or are working on changing your pedal stroke.

Hope this helps....

doug,
bike is off the trainer--used it this weekend
that's exactly what i did on Wed. night

but yes, the non quick release side is stuck in the cup, i will try some needle nose pliers or a hammer or something tonight, i didn't know if I could damage something but i guess it's replaceable anyhow.

thanks guys

yeah I think the pliers/hammer (would be better if you had a rubber mallet)  are kind of a last resort thing, I haven't seen the skewer stick that tightly before.

I would take the bike in for a fit.  Incorrect cleat position/float can cause you some serious pains.

Did you get speedplay zero's, light action or the x series?

If you got the zero's adjusting float is pretty easy.

As far as arch support yes, they make all kinds of insoles, wedges, etc, getting a fit they would probably do all that stuff for you to put in the proper support.
