Whew - I just finished catching up on the past 5 pages that I missed.  :-)  I had a busy family weekend and a very lazy training weekend.  Sat. is my day off and Sunday I got a bike in but it's been so hard to get up for a swim even though the pool is literally at the end of my street.  Pretty sad, I know.  The run training is going great but the rest is falling by the wayside.  Not too big a deal - I only have a sprint left this year for fun but I feel bad mentally.

Sounds like everyone had a great weekend whether filled with racing or family.  I can't believe summer is winding down.

Hey, did I know you were getting a coach? tell us about him or her?  I use TP and like it alot.  It is a great way to communicate back and forth with your coach.  I upload my workouts, look at all the data and then save them. Steve gets a copy and usually sends me some little tibit afterwards.  Only downside is it gets a little cumbersome to manage both TP and BT.

i'm to slow not to have one ;-).  he's a local coach down here. i've spent the past month or so looking around.  i received great reviews about him so i pulled the trigger last week. he's got a  team of about 40 people w/ 3 coaches.    i can join in on the group workouts throughout the week which is awesome.  we'll see how it goes.

Sam and I have been shopping around also, we found a local guy, but not sure what his rates are.  I do know he is one of the best fitters in the area.  Friend of a friend also so maybe we can cut a deal : )

Yeah, I keep tossing around the idea of attempting to strip it down and rebuild it, but I just can't find the time.  My Fuji road bike is another project that I'd love to get all cleaned up and repainted.  But I want a few new toys and don't have the extra cash for them so I have to sell some other things and make room in the garage.

Nice vacation spot Chris...nice.

Dude, I have no idea why this keeps happening.  It started like a month ago!  I think my fingers are just getting fatter!  I thought you were supposed to lose weight while exercising!

BTW, I challenge you to make a trip down south and do a tri.  This way I can pass along the HTFU on to you on a 35C degree day with 100% humidity.  I notice your temp range in your logs was between 11C and 23C?  It hasn't been 23C here during the day since March!

Only way I could do a tri in that temperature is a super-sprint....and myabe if its indoors!!! Only way I could make it work is if there  were a few rounds of golf as well Wink......You need to come run up here as well in the winter when its -20F!!
Oh and the HTFU was Barry not me!!!!!

Oh, and I must brag.  I got a pedicure last night and the black callus I have on my toe from running is still there!  I am so proud that I've developed a callus so tough a pedicure couldn't remove it.  I guess I'm a runner now!!!

Either that or your your starting to rot.

roni_runnw - 2009-08-16 6:24 PM Hi MG! It's been a busy weekend and I haven't had time to read any posts. So, I hope everyone's races went well and I'll try to catch up ASAP. My sprint was fun today. I finished in 1:37:00... a new PR by 1:57! I had a great swim... 15:49 for 880 yds. The bike was OK, but I still have a lot of work to do on those hills... 48:24 including transitions. And, the run was pretty crappy... 32:47. The BBQ, beer, and seeing all my Montana tri friends was a blast! Oh, did I mention it was only 50 degrees and overcast. At least it waited until the BBQ to start raining. Undecided It was quite an adjustment from the 100 degree temps we've been having in South Central Washington.

About my run today... I have yet to have a good run off the bike. Anyone have any suggestions for getting better at this? Should I just do more bricks? Any other training suggestions? I know hammering and pushing too hard on the bike can cause problems on the run, but I don't think this is the issue for me. I just don't seem to run well off the bike, no matter how easy I go on the bike, even in training.

Nice race Roni. What I do on the run is smaller steps and once loose lenghten out. You never going to run as well ogg the bike as if you are only doing a run. You've already used up a good portion of energy getting to the run and using different muscles. So the answer I think I am trying to say is you will  have to accept it. Even with more paactice you will still have the same issues. You will however be able to accept it more easily.

I'd agree with this. Just as it can help to kick a little more vigorously toward the end of the swim to get some blood flow into the legs coming into T1, I'd found that spinning into T2 at a slightly higher cadence can help to prepare for the run. Your body has to adapt to shunting blood flow from the quads to the hammies. As Rob said, once off the bike, I usually shorten my stride and work on bringing my HR down after that initial spike, and thinking about smooth, controlled breathing. Then I'll slowly start to lengthen it out and find my rhythm.

I also try to find a inhale/exhale pattern that I can concentrate on: (in) stride stride stride (out) stride stride stride (in) stride stride stride etc. and then get into that pattern as soon as possible. It gives your mind something else to concentrate on other than the misery of running off the bike! While you're in a training run, figure out what your natural, comfortable pattern is and practice that on every brick. I've found it helps me train my mind/body to be in sync for that transition.

Since I tend to put a little more downward pressure on the exhalation stride, I try to switch it up every half-mile or so.

Unfortunately, it will never feel 100% great, no matter how many bricks you do in preparation...

Too funny.  I guess during the winter, you get in alot of the "high knee" running exercise?  BTW, I knew someone was going send a HTFU my way, I just didn't know who would first! - Even I was thinking it myself!  I think with the whole golf thing, we could make it work.  Better yet, if they decide to do a 1/2 in Clemson in 2011, we could have a big BT weekend with a few parties, golf tournament, etc.  Tell me that wouldn't be a great weekend!

Someone walk me off the ledge.......over the course of the season we have had three drownings at Sprint/Oly events in Wisconsin.  I was at the one two weeks ago and the woman was an experienced triathlete.  Yesterday another woman is swimming with her five triathlete friends on the IM WI Course and vanishes. Somehow two people found her and pulled her to safety for CPR and a trip to the hospital.  All were wearing wetsuits and all are experienced.  Two did die due to heart issues, but how does someone just go under with a wetsuit on?

As someone who is working hard to put all drowning crap behind her, I start thinking about this every time I struggle in the H20.  I'm like Linus and that wetsuit is my security blanket.  And yes, I know I swam a long dang way this weekend.....can you give me your best pep talk?

Suzy:

You are very detailed oriented which IMHO is a good thing. You are an accomplished runner and that came from dedication, a desire to learn and experiment and CONCENTRATION! All it takes, in any activity, is a small slip in one's concentration at the wrong time. A car accident when riding can happen if one gets distracted. An experienced swimmer in a wetsuit can lose their rhythm if they get distrated and thereby swallow water.

With your ability to focus and at the same time plan a long way down the line calander-wise, I do not think that thesetypes of accdents are likely to happen to you. ALso you do not seem to be someone that takes things for granted which can be another reason for these incidents. If you get too cocky bad things can happen: NOT YOU!

Suzy, I'll second Doug and Trevor - you are one that prepares dilligently and are a strong competitor.  Not everyone has that on their side.

Everything has some inherent risk - riding in a car, riding a bike, eating shellfish.  Does that stop us from doing those things?  No, becasue the odds are slim.  Think about how many people successfully completed tri's this year (you're always saying to focus on the positive) without any issues.  Even if you weren't as prepared as you are, the odds are still on your side.  Your preparation tilts them even further in your favor.

Can't worry about those things, you have gone on some long swims with no problems, that should be all the motivation you need.

Congrats Trevor. lad to hear the sweating is over. At lest for the job.

Suzy... you don't need pep talk just someone to tell you to HTFU  Reallythough you have done the training and an OLympic already so the up and coming HIM swim is no big deal. Go out and enjoy the swim for what it is. A great long bath with 300/400 other people bfore you go for a ride.

Now me on the other hand. I am starting to get nervous about my HIM. One day I am thnking how excited I am about the race and the next thinking what have I gotten myself into. I was reading the athlete's handbook for Muskoka on the train on the way home today and there seems to be so much to remember never mind the race. I know that once I get there I will focus on the race with no problem but right now it's nerves versus excitement. I am still struggling a bit with nutrition. I have received my infinit formula and it works very well. I was wondering though for those of you who have already the half and full tris under your belt what other nutrition should I be looking at. Just bars or gels? ON the bke course they have gatorade, water and gels. on the run the same plus pretzels and pepsi. I dont see having pretzels in the middle of the race. Besides aren't you supposed to have beer with pretezels. I have the prerace nutrition down OK. Not so sure about after but there is a buffet so I assume there will lots of good stuff to chose from.

As usual I am in the last wave of swimmers to go.  8th wave with pretty "pink" caps ( Tracy you should be here in that wave ). 226 of us.  Why do they put my age group at the end? The race starts at 8:00AM and my wave isn't until 8:39. I could cool off in between. The elites could be well into their biking before I even get in the water.   You never know i could find some pace booty for the run.

First - Great Job, sorry it rained on your BBQ - that is a party foul by Mother Nature.

Second - Instead of full bricks, how about transition runs after most of your bike workouts?  Run for just 15-30 minutes afterwards.
