First of all I think I missed birthday wishes for Kelli - Hope it was HAPPY!!!

I guess that's why we keep him around huh?

How's it going with you KK?  All ready for xmas/the holidays with the rugrats?

Thanks so much for asking I'm as ready as I'm going to be I guess.  My parents are here which is a first, they divorced when I was 3, Dad lives in California and Mom lives in Colorado.  So far it has been GREAT!  But I do have plenty of wine on hand should it take a turn Smile

As wonderful as it is to have my boys home from school and my parents here it has really thrown my training out the window!!!  I should have done a long run over the weekend or anytime after that I suppose.  My issue is that my long run takes me out for the whole day.  When I get back I am not only spent but in pain.  My long run is 10 miles and takes 2+ hours then there's the ice bath, hot shower and fetal position that follows.  That would be most of the day away from everyone.  I am actually thinking, Christmas day might be the best day to run, we'll see if I can tear myself away from the girls playing with their new toys long enough to torture myself.  I wish I just had one more extra week before the half.

Enough belly aching.  I'd also like to say that I am so excited about this group!  Y'all keep me honest and inspired!

The Texas list looks good but like Justin said you need to add in both TriGril races in May and August.  And what is this new September Oly in Cypress????  This is the first I have heard.  Where in Cypress can you swim that far?  Justin - do you know where this is going to be?

April 25th - Lonestar - Galveston - nearly everyone in the Houston area in this group will be there.  I am cheering, not racing in this one.

Merry Christmas everyone!

This group is helping me learn and keep going already - THANKS!

I am glad Justine is back in time for santa!

Hope everyone gets loads of tri-crap from santa!

Like Ken said Lonestar ~ April ~ Total Awesomeness ~ if you could join the fun!  From the SWBKRUN group, they have several out of towners coming in for that race!

There is something special about meeting Triathletes, BT'ers and friends from all over the place at races!  Good times!

I added lap data to my Garmin so you could see what I do for my negative splits.  I think a lot of how big the difference is from start to finish also needs to take into account how use you are to running that distance.  If you normally run in the 6+ range I would think it should be fairly easy to hold a pace that are closer to each other for your shorter runs.  I know that the longer I go the bigger the time difference will be.  That being said, I am not sure I will ever get to over a minute in difference (or there about that range).  This is way different then when I did my marathon training.  I always tried to maintain a steady pace and I just find this works better for me.

kjivie - 2009-12-22 6:33 PM So I made it a point to negative split on my run today, but I think I was a bit
extreme.  It was only a 3 miler but my first mile was 7:27 and my third was 6:14.  I am assuming this is waaay more negative than you guys were talking about.  I guess my question is- as long as I don't overdo it and am able to recover for my next workout, do I really need to pay attention to HR, splits, etc.?

Thanks for your answer, Eric.  I'm going to try the low HR thing and see how it goes.  I could definitely use some injury prevention for a couple of months.

I see an added benefit of developing some patience, too:  I just did a run and tried to keep my HR between 135 and 140.  It felt like I was crawling!

I actually have trouble with this as well.  I tell myself that I am going to take it nice and easy, but by the end of it I am running way too fast.  Maybe I should try taking my HRM on my next run.

One thing that helped me with the running way too fast is to think negative splits.  I make a concentrated effort to not necessarily run slow, but an easy comfortable pace when starting.  I stick with that for probably 10 minutes and then I just find myself naturally speeding up until my run is complete.  Taking that time to go slow actually makes my overall running faster.  It takes a bit to get it nailed but once you do you'll run longer and stronger (and probably faster).

I am not a huge fan of running with my heart rate monitor.  I find it way to distracting.  And although I run with a Garmin I also pretty much ignore it as well.  I do glance at mileage from time to time since I wing most my routes but if you pay attention to pace and mile splits, etc you just get to tense worrying about the numbers.  After the run is when you analyze all that.

I GOT A GARMIN 305!

What did everyone else get for Christmas?  Hope it was the tri bike you were asking for. Maybe some zip wheels or even better still a PppppppPower Tap.

I also got some other tri stuff but the GARMIN is gonna really be helpful.  I have tri shorts and tri top now; I guess I have no choice but to learn to swim.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!

I got a new swimsuit that I oh so badly needed and a H2O Audio armband and headphones so I can use my Zune in the pool.  Yeah.

You'll LOVE the 305.  I highly recommend getting the quick release kit (with or without the cadence monitor) as the strap is way more comfortable.  If you get just that it's not that expensive (but the cadence monitor did help my biking).

OK, off to play new Wii games.  Wii Resort and the new Wii Fit games have to be played and evaluated before starting to make supper.

Merry Christmas all.

Merry Christmas!!!

I got a trainer too.  That Ken, he's a pretty awesome Santa!

Had a magical morning watching the girls open their presents, took some pics I'll post later.

Went on a run that turned miserable and painful, hoping my knee/leg gets better with some rest.

Hello Everyone,

The last two days have been somewhat of a rest/lazy day. This morning I used my new bike trainer. Used a Spinerval cd and almost puked! Only did 20 min of it but enough to get me off. The rest is posted on my TL. I am getting ready to head out for a run. It looks like today will be the best day for the week so I will be taking advantage of it. Sunny and 45 deg with wind Frown. It sure beats, cloudy, snowy, windy, and f$%#@ cold.

Talk to you when I get back. Thinking long run here. hmm...

Hey everyone!!

Hope everyone had a great Christmas and that Santa was good to everyone! I didn't get any tri stuff but didn't really ask for anything since I just started all this about 3 weeks ago. I did however get some money which I am most likely putting towards my "bike fund".

I have a question more for the girls in the group. I was looking at some tri books yesterday in Barnes and Noble and saw one called The Woman Triathlete. It seemed to be really good when I was looking through it and I have read some good reviews about it. Have any of you read it? If so would you recommend buying it? Thanks for any input!

I looked at a few books several months ago and honestly don't remember the names of the ones I picked up.  There were 2 geared towards women at my B&N.  The one I got is called Triathlons for Women by Sally Edwards - the pics are a bit dated but I found it much more down to earth and 'me' than the other book which was filled with ripped up women and really focussed on pro's.  I'm never going to be a pro and when I sat down at B&N it just didn't seem like I was the audience for that other book.  Does that make sense?

I ended up going for a long run this afternoon. The weather was great and probably the best day of the week ahead. The temperature was just right and the sun was bright against the blue sky with no clouds in sight. The wind was blowing probably around 10mph......................... My goal was to keep a constant pace and keeping the hr low. Somewhere in between 132 and 134bpm........ I was in a constant fight with my mind trying to tell myself that it was a long way to go and that I needed to keep a slow pace and if I had anything left the last few miles, then to kick it up a notch. There sure is a lot to think about in 2.5 hrs and thankfully I had the ipod. I did have a few times in which negative thoughts made its way to the top but had to convince myself that I needed to persevere, put the pain away, (some spots my knees were giving me the fits)and keep plugging along............. I got home, took the shoes off, had my recovery drink and another bottle of water. I filled the bath tub with piping cold water. Honestly, I tried sitting down on the tub but I could not make myself do it. I ended up sitting on the side and pouring water over the legs..... I don't have any compression socks nor pants, so I put some long tight soccer socks. I had some tightness on the calves when I got done. Hopefully tomorrow there will be no pain on the legs so I can get on the bike (weather permitting)......... Tomorrow is swimming and biking on the training books followed by some grocery shopping and a little R&R.<<<<<Questions for all>>>>>>>>>>>><<<<<Question?? What is your nutrition when you go for a long run. Lets say over 2 hrs? I know everyone is different in their nutrition and our bodies take it in differently, so! what is your libation? :D .............................................I ate an hour and something before heading out for the run (prob around 2000 calories). At the two hour mark in the run, I was hungry. The only nutrition I took for the road was a Roctane Gel and a bottle of water................................................................................<<<<<Question?? What do you carry for bike tire essentials? I see MOST athletes don't carry the "under seat bag" for carrying a tube or pump. Do you carry those on one of your back pockets?

It sure does. I definitely want to get something that's beginner friendly since I'm nowhere near being a pro. I didn't see the book you got. The one I was looking at seemed pretty beginner friendly so it may not be the one you saw. It had workouts for sprint, olympic and half IM (maybe even IM can't remember). Also it had chapters on running biking and swimming and how to improve on them. But I'm still looking around at books. I love reading so I thought this could be my christmas gift to myself once I find a book i really like.
