My first experience buying/bidding on ebay today; that was interesting.  I was keeping an eye on the bidding on the Adamo saddle and about 2 min. before it closed the bidding started moving up.  I was getting ready for my bike class and bidding by my phone and it was having to reload all the time.  Ended up winning the bidding for a pretty decent price; nothing spectacular.  We'll see how it goes with the fit of this type of saddle.  I hope it works out.  I have plenty of time to try it out on my indoor trainer and get it dialed in.

mbehr1983 - 2013-01-12 9:14 AM Finished my first 5k of 2013. I did not get the result was looking for 38:31,wanted to be around 30-35. I need some insight on how to improve on time. Currently trying to build a base I ran an average of 32 mins or so I plan on upping that 10% next week. Thanks for the help

Congrats on your 1st 5 K.  I won' t go into how to improve your time as other have already mentioned some.  What I found for myself when I started running longer distances (I was a sprinter in HS), the more I ran and longer I ran the faster my times got for my Sprint Distance Tri's.  When I was into it about three years I incorporated Speed workouts and got faster, but I haven't been able to keep up with the speed workouts and it really was too much for my knees to handle at my age.  So I just keep plugging along and continue to run longer and do some extended intervals during those runs or a series of short bursts.

Good luck on your goals and lowering your times.

Don't sweat it.  First, trail runs are generally slower than a run on pavement of the same distance.  Second, speaking from very direct experience - one of the easiest ways to get injured is to go out and push too hard without a solid base built over a long period of time.  I did that a year ago T-Day and was unable to run for months.  I missed both a half marathon and a half ironman race as I was so hobbled.

so...  listen to Suzy, build base and be patient or you may find yourself a year later starting at the beginning again...

Two different things here... Building a base and building speed. There are two different ideas or plans here. Speed is one thing...track workouts, speed work, etc... Increase in base is more of long slow distance. It is a matter of what your goals are this year. Is it sprints or half, or in between.. What are the MAIN goals this year. This group will get you there....

You have it backwards.  I lost, so you buy!  I'm sure I'll be thirsty after the marathon! Just think how much more you would have trounced us if you had more than a QB on your team.

PS.  I'm moving onto my second selection, the Seahawks.  Go Russell!!!

I agree with Steve on this Mike.  If your goal is to improve your 5k time then it is going to involve speed work (.25 and .5 mile repeats for example) but if you are trying to move up in distance then concentrate on building base.  Your 5k time will drop with just increased base and mileage but be clear on what you are trying to accomplish.  Congrats on your 5k!

Ok. I am going to focus on building a base. I hope the speed will come. I have a 4 year old who wants to race with me. What should I do to get her involved? I know fun runs and what and how much should I let her do

When my son was real young and I was practicing my transitions from swim to bike and bike to run he would get his scooter or bike w/training wheels and he would see how fast he could do it after; he'd time me with a stop watch. He loved the involvement. Later when he was able to ride his bike w/o training wheels he would ride along when I ran; shorter runs of course. He'd also ride around the track or run at the track. Great way to keep an eye on them. I'd run a lap and he'd wait until i came back around and jog with me for a short distance stop and keep repeating.Hope that gives you some ideas.

I'm going to disagree with you and Steve.  As a newbie to running, I don't recommend doing speed work.  Period.  Distance is all relative.  The goal should be to slowly build the aerobic engine and speed improvement will follow.  When you have that base, knock yourself silly doing 200s-800s or tempo runs.

Well I went for my first run yesterday in several months and first run 3 weeks after having most of my meniscus removed. I have to say I was pain free. Ran slow and easy 2.75km not very much distance but I want to ease back into this.

I have to say even from that short run my quads are killing me. Other then tight muscles around my knee I didn't feel any pain in the area of the knee where my meniscus was causing issues for the last 6 months. So I am happy.

But man am I out of shape and really lacking motivation.

Have you tried Trainer Road yet for your indoor cycling? I downloaded the software this week and I'm hooked already! It's really made me feel keen to train again. My advice would be to make cycling your fitness priority from now on and allow the cycling fitness to filter through to your running. If you're able to cope with it psychologically then that uphill treadmill walking I did before my last tri seemed to be effective as a no impact running substitute.

It's not our "regular" spot... about 40 minutes from my house. It's called Rattlesnake Ridge (or Ledge): http://www.wta.org/go-hiking/hikes/rattle-snake-ledge -- popular hiking spot, known for its bang-for-the-buck. It's a short hike (2-ish miles) for an awesome view. Nice lake at the bottom, dogs love swimming there in the summer!
