  Gasp!

The cost of doing an IM really gives me pause.  When you think about entry, travel, and extra time/gear (that many more miles? that many more tires, tubes, running shoes, etc) it can really add up.  When I started down this path a year ago I was doing it with the idea of working up to an IM to check it off my bucket list.  Now I love training and doing tris. but I'm not sure I'll ever do an IM :)

Much props to all of you who do and take on that commitment.  It is really impressive.

Does the altitude seem scary at all?

Tahoe looks like it would be GORGEOUS, but I don't know how I'd prepare adequately for the altitude.

Yeah, the cost is where some of the other companies could be nice. Still not cheap, but a few hundred less is rather noticeable. I'm not big on the crowds either. Makes it hard to go at my own pace for awhile into it. So another requirement for me would be getting my swimming up fast enough to clear the heaviest sections.

Get your swimming up?!? Really? What do you do an IM swim in? What about a wave start?

Pretty sure I'd be under 1:05 and might be able to hit an hour. I'd like to be a bit stronger to make sure I was out of the crowd more. Especially for the start as I'm not really much for contact and prefer to ease into things instead of the mad rush so many do. I'm also a LOT faster in the in the water now than last year, but that's mostly pool. I'd want to make sure I'm translating that to open water better. I'm faster in open water now, but need some more practice to get all of the pool increases to show up there too.

The other reason, and maybe just as much so, is for the bike. I'm noticeably stronger than the last couple Mdot events and felt rather crowded there for quite awhile. Near 5 hrs flat is realistic on a number of courses, and could go under that on the fastest ones. How crowded a course seems can vary from one person to the next for a few reasons not always thought of. One is where they come out of the swim. Once ahead there, even average on the bike won't see as much traffic. Then for bike speed, it looks a lot different to a more average biker than to a FOP one. Instead of having 50 people to go around there are now 800-1300 or more. Or at a local sprint I was in the last wave. An average rider may have gone around say 20 people. I might go around 150 or more in less than 12 miles. Kind of wish I had put the GoPro on for that one to show how different it looks. Kind of like being in a driving video game and hitting the turbo boost or nitrous. Trying to run when there are a number of walkers on the path might work as well, but doesn't quite have the same edge.

The wave starts can help with the swim in spreading things out, but the issue would still remain with the bike. It can help spread things out a bit to lessen it some, but also introduces luck of the draw in where ones wave is at in the line.

These are good problems :)

I haven't ever thought about these issues, but I can imagine they are real and significant at your level.

I'd tell you to "go slow" and "be sure", but...flew from CA to KS with J after 3 weeks of dating (met fam/friends), engaged after 6 months, married at 10 months. 2 kids, 5 houses, and 9 years later...the story's still going Kiss

This grabbed me the other day (Manatee mantra?)-

My parents were pseudo engaged on their second date.  My dad gave my mom a Wrigley's wrapper around her finger and said something about "when we get married."  They were married for real after just over six months and they just celebrated #46 together.

Love. That. Book. Shivers up my spine!

By the way, this IS me going slowly and being sure!

Slow? Sure?  WTF is that?

I married my husband after dating him for 4 months (had known him for 6 years, but still).  Slow and sure

Trust your gut.

Hugs Mz. Yanti.

OK, I admit that I *may* have asked TW to marry me after 2 weeks. Innocent

My DH said he knew after about 2 months, but didn't want to ask (I was 18 at the time and he was 21).

I freakin love that guy.  What a stud.

Thanks for that Jo, and thanks for your nice words about my race.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I got my RR up http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=496029&posts=2#M4811703

and would love feedback on how to train for and balance the bike/run.  I had only done two +50 mile rides before the race, and ran 5 miles after one of those. Oops.

I am really clueless here...any help or tips would be much appreciated:)

Me too!

My grandparents met and were married within 6 weeks, and spent the next 54 years bickering lovingly with each other.  My parents were high school sweethearts and tried to break up while in university to see if things were greener on the other side of the fence, and that lasted a month. They are now on year 42 of my dad being the most patient man in the world.

I first met Tony in June 2010 and by Feb. 2011 had moved to London to live with the guy, then married in July 2012.  When you know, you know.

Went on an amazing ride up to the brewery last night with a bunch of us girls (there were 8 of us)

It's really quite amazing how easily general athletic ability can translate so well from sport to sport. These girls were pretty much all high level basketball players but after just some very general tips they could just fly on the bike. We had a few weak links but everyone learned how to work together on the way home.

The moon came out as we were approaching our finish and it was just beautiful!

The August issue came out for NW Runner and I've still got the 5th fastest marathon and now the 4th fastest 10K in the state (for my AG.) I am pretty excited but I really need to race again soon to hold onto my title. Especially as my 10K is a little weak for what I think I can do. I can't wait to get back to running!!!!

What courses look most promising to you and why?

How do you train for possible big waves/bad water conditions?  Do you have access to that?

Some of the new ones have at least raised a little interest. Like Tahoe, or Canda. Challenge Penticton. Boulder might have interesting, but doesn't seem to represent the area well. It's not going to be an easy course, but I'd go nuts seeing the mountains there and not really going up them. That and the heat would be devastating to me. Like Cabo would be as well. The rumored eastern one maybe, but some are now thinking they'll make it rather flat. Others that'd be interesting would be major travel ones, like Lanzarote, Norseman or Swissman. I can't afford the travel to those, however.

Sure the bikes on these are challenging (some REALLY challenging), but it's more about being engaged with the course and the area. The climbing wouldn't have to be of epic proportions, though yes, it would still have to be a really good bike course. Smile  The run wouldn't have to match the difficulty, but I also wouldn't want it to be pancake flat and bake in the sun all afternoon.

Training for bigger waves or tougher swim conditions is a good question. Mostly I just work on becoming a stronger swimmer and things can take care of themselves that way to an extent. Haven't really had races where that would be an issue, but if I needed, I should be able to get over to Lake Michigan on occasion. Otherwise everything else is too small to have much adversity, or too dirty or high in boat traffic to be safe.

Great picture! And congrats on your state ranking, you should be excited. You can get back to full time running right after you kick azz at Nationals ( or whatever you call that fancy tri you're doing)
