Extreme Veteran 452 Ottawa, Ontario | Subject: RE: Increase your Cycling Power over the winter = Faster times on 2009 With intervals it sometimes feels during the first one that I will not be able to finish them all. Once I get to the later intervals I seem to find the energy to pull them off. Similar effect with swimming - the first 500 metres feels really hard and after that I can go for a long time without feeling the muscle fatigue. D |

Master 2491 | Subject: RE: Increase your Cycling Power over the winter = Faster times on 2009 The first interval is the hardest, for sure. The legs and lungs seem to be geared up after that first one. For me, the next to last is also hard, because I'm getting gassed by then, but it's not quite over yet. |

Master 3479 Utah | Subject: RE: Increase your Cycling Power over the winter = Faster times on 2009 That's the thing--by the last interval, I felt like I could keep going. It was just getting over the initial "I'm gonna puke and I'm only going 7 mph on a trainer in my living room" freak out. After that, I actually felt good about the workout. It just freaked me out a little. So is Jorge back to post the next set of fun yet? |

Master 2491 | Subject: RE: Increase your Cycling Power over the winter = Faster times on 2009 I hope you're okay, Jorge. I was hoping for a new set of workouts this morning but did Week #5, workout #1 instead. |

Elite 3447 West Allis, WI | Subject: RE: Increase your Cycling Power over the winter = Faster times on 2009 I'm sad there are no workouts I have hit every workout even if I had to switch it up to fit the schedule. I have looked forward to these workouts...it's the only thing that got me on my trainer. Hope you're doing ok Jorge. |

Lethbridge, Alberta | Subject: RE: Increase your Cycling Power over the winter = Faster times on 2009 My bike trainer has been badly neglected over the last two weeks. Between holiday traveling, snow shoveling, and a couple of non-tri related health issues, it just didn't get done. I did manage at least a short run almost every day though, so I'm ready to get back on the horse now and will try for a bike workout this evening. Time to get back to work! Hope everyone else enjoyed their holidays too! |

Elite 3779 Ontario | Subject: RE: Increase your Cycling Power over the winter = Faster times on 2009 I'm sure Jorge will be posting the workouts at some point today. I tried to get up this morning and do a ride on my own, but it just didn't happen. I guess I've really come to depend on these to keep me motivated and stay on the bike. Something tells me I won't be thinking so kindly about these once the intensity gets knocked up a couple of notches. |

Looking forward to checking on the plan later tonight. |

Coach 10487 Boston, MA | Subject: RE: Increase your Cycling Power over the winter = Faster times on 2009 Ok people sorry for the delay, week 8 is up! This next 3 weeks will focus on the very top end speed (VO2max) hence the intervals will be shorter but much harder. You will notice as you do more of those This will allow you to create a 'bigger' room for you power to grow once we focus exclusively on Threshold sessions. |

Expert 1244 New York | Subject: RE: Increase your Cycling Power over the winter = Faster times on 2009 I've been taking it easy on the trainer these past two weeks, too. And am finally more or less done with my bronchitis, so I'm just getting ready for my first session of 2009 right now. Good God, I already know this is gonna hurt! (And intervals really scare the whatzit out of me. This is why I'm on here, procrastinating). Bring. The. Pain. |

Subject: RE: Increase your Cycling Power over the winter = Faster times on 2009 Evening all I was sick a few weeks back and thought I was over it. Well I got home from work around 2:30 am on the Decemebr 22 after closing the prodcution line down in the plant. I had a fever of 104 and was not doing to well, Tylenol and off to bed, thinking I would sleep it off. I missed Christmas eve and Christmas day, in bed. On Friday after Christmas my wife drove me to the Doctors. She teold me I had Pnumonia and a couple of shots and a few script's later sent me home and to bed. This Monday came and I was still to sick to go to work, back to the Doc's, more meds. Today I am finally up and getting bored and complaining. The wife says my complaining is a good sign!. So back to work on Thursday and hopefully back on the bike. These past two weeks have kicked my down to nothing and I will probabley have to start all over. Ok done moaning now. Joe |

Lethbridge, Alberta | Subject: RE: Increase your Cycling Power over the winter = Faster times on 2009 Good to hear you're starting to feel better Joe. Quick question: Are we calling the 1st week of the VO2max work week 8 or week 6? The number in the little picture with all the workouts says 6 but the blog labels and everyone else seems to be calling it 8. Whatever we're calling it, 1st one done here. The one minute intervals at 115% didn't seem too bad at first but afterwards the longer lower power levels were starting to get hard to finish. |

It seems many of us were sick battered at some point but as long as we get back on the saddle and catch up with the training let's keep moving to have a kick azz 2009! |

Master 1222 Lafayette, IN | Subject: RE: Increase your Cycling Power over the winter = Faster times on 2009 Jorge, will you take a look at my blog and comment on the workout today? I could not get my HR into Zone5 though I was pushing as hard as I could and it hurt! I was only able to hit about 100% of my LTHR. Is it the lag effect of HR that I am seeing? Or am I a weenie? Thanks. |

Thanks. That's normal. the efforts are too short for your HR to catch up and creap all the way to where it should be hence it is vital you use RPE as well. as sets get longer your HR will have time to catch up as long as your legs hurt/burn you are around the right intensity |

Elite 3779 Ontario | Subject: RE: Increase your Cycling Power over the winter = Faster times on 2009 Not sure why, but the Q1 session wasn't too bad this week. The 1min intervals hurt, but I knew they would end quickly, and afterwards the lower intensity sets just seemed really easy. I posted this comment before, and I think Gregkl's comment reaffirms it. Unless you're really in tune with RPE, the HR group is going to work harder than the Power group as they try to hit their HR numbers during the short sets, while the power group only looks at watts - HR being more of an afterthought. |

Master 3479 Utah | Subject: RE: Increase your Cycling Power over the winter = Faster times on 2009 my HR monitor decided not to read properly today--so I only had a good reading until about the end of the warmup. I went with RPE and a few hit and miss manual checks during the longer intervals. I feel like I went hard enough--the one minute intervals ended just in time, and I felt good and got the HR where it should be on the long intervals. i do think I'll be a little sore, though. Thanks again for doing this, Jorge. I soooo appreciate it.
