Mett - 2010-07-28 6:20 AM ok so I am not the only one that struggles with that one lol I am working on getting to bed early so I can try and incorporate a run in the morning. I love running at the park so I am going to try and do that more.

On a side note: my wife has an interview for a work at home job (a legit one) and I really hope it works out. So everyone pray, cheer or do whatever you do to throw some mojo our way. The extra money would be INCREDIBLE!

This goes to all... If you are weakest in one sport why not focus on it (in the offseason)?  If it is running you hate and you want to be a triathlete, run until you love it (with more structure obviously).  Sign up for an EARLY season 1/2 marathon or 10k, or 5k.  Make it your primary focus.

I did this this past off season. I worked on running and chose to run a marathon. In retrospect running a 1/2 marathon would have been better given my goals this year.

Doug maybe you can chime in a little on taking a break from cycling for an extended period.  I would think that if you are still in shape and you will get your cycling legs back pretty quickly!

I have taken extended breaks from cycling and, for me personally, have found I lost very little of my power and strength as long as I was still working out in other areas.

I personally think that swimming day in and day out will not make me a much faster swimmer so I choose not to swim that often.  However running or biking day in day out will make me a faster triathlete so that is what I focus on (sort of).... (This is my choice)

I agree and disagree with this Steve. I agree that at some point simple swimming more miles will not help your swim time. In the beginning it will. However, swimming is easily the most technical discipline as you have to deal with drag in  the water. Technique is critical here. Therefore, swimming a lot where you are trying to develop good technique and make it muscle memory is vital! My coach was a college swimmer. He has taught a lot in a short period of time. My swim time year over year in the Triangle triathlon dropped 18%.

I know where I need to work now (weight and running). I agree that working on your weakest element is the quickest way to improve your overall time.

Mett- Good luck to the misses!

Racers--- GO GIVE EM' HELL this weekend.

Mett - 2010-07-28 7:57 AM Here is a question: I am really struggling with getting the running and swimming in. I love the cycling and it is what my buddy is in to so I typically ride w/ him when he asks. Anyone have any tips on how to overcome favoring one sport? I was on a schedule but life shot it out hte window, I am trying to stick w/ it but for some reason it is really hard right now as all I want to do is ride the bike. I love swimming and I am excited I was able to renew my pool membership (17.67 a month!) at the rec center. Running I hate because it hurts and I suck  at it, but I know if I could do it every morning or what not I would get better.

The most I can tell you is this:  Most start in the sport with a stronger leg, some college swimmers, some marathon runners, others longtime bikers.  After starting training, we often develop types of workouts, routes, and even certain sports that we prefer to run.  Right now, I am on a kick of intervals/hills for run workouts, prior to that it was intervals on the bike.  Had a semi-failed run last night due to the heat, I only did 2 hill repeats, before deciding I would be better off just running a constant pace with the heat index well into the triple digits.  But this morning I went on a 5 mile run with my wife that was at a pace much slower for me and it was refreshing, just what I needed to keep me changing up workouts.

As mentioned above, you have support on the bike, which is probably why you enjoy it so much.  See if you can get that support elsewhere.  Not sure how old your kids are, but could you and your wife run at a track and have the kids play (playground or in the field?)  Best wishes to her btw.  Maybe a jogging stroller could be a celebration gift if that would work to help get the kids out with you both running.

I do have to criticize a little in saying that you said life got in the way of your training, does life also include your biking friend asking you to ride?  Plan days you will ride together in advance, and if he changes things, tell him sorry I cant make it due to other commitments.  If you guys can establish set times (Monday, Wednesday at 6PM) that will get some repetition in your schedule to plan around.  You say you have the rec center to swim, is there anywhere that offers masters courses?  Again something that would lock in a time and not leave it up to you as much when you do it.

I like crticism, sometimes my brain just goes to left field. What I meant w/ life is after my final and the 100 mile ride I just had a tough time rolling back in to the swing of things. My riding buddy is usually only available on the weekends, tonight was kind of a quick deal as he finally had an evening to make it out. Some of it too is missing having guys to hang with. After my wife and I got married and had a kid everyone disappeared. My wife doesnt really like going out either so my social life is down the tubes and I am trying to do what I can to make it a little better. Unfortunately most of the people I know are not interested in training for anything (trust me I have tried). My wife had a jogging stroller and didnt like it at all. I dont think my rec center offers the masters classes. There is a masters team here that I was going to try and save up to join this fall/winter.

SSMinnow - 2010-07-28 6:12 AM Happy Wednesday people......time to check your calendars and see if you're racing this weekend.  If you are, lay down the details!  I know of at least two dudes toeing the line....

For those of us on the sidelines, is there one goal you still want to accomplish this season?  what is it? and how're you going to nail it?

Kicking off my very busy August this weekend with a  first annual tri for Camp Courageous.  This is close to where I grew up and a first annual, so I am looking forward to going and racing near "home"  This is not a priority race, as I am focusing on getting ready for the half marathon the following weekend.  I think the distances are 500 yard swim, 17 mile bike, and 5k, surprisingly enough it is USAT sanctioned.

The goal is to make this one hurt, I want to be uncomfortable the whole race.  It sounds a tad sadistic, but I need to make it hurt at this race to better know my body for the end of the month.

Swim: Will not be wetsuit legal, aiming for 1:30 pace, but under 8 minutes is the goal.
Bike: The illusive 240 watts, not much elevation, and predicted low winds, hopefully I don't pop a water bottle again!  Hopefully around 43 minutes
Run: 5k USAT course makes me want to push hard for sub 20.

This race has 2 transitions, so logistically I need to be comfortable going in and organized, probably doesn't hurt that I am an early bird and like to be there nice and early.

I hear ya on that one, the other issue is most of my friends disappeared after I got out of college and took a different path. They all still party ,club and do their thing which I just dont enjoy anymore. Plus with them all smoking I couldnt even stand it now days. I do wish my wife would make some friends, she really needs a break from being a mom and most of the time she ends up with me lol. She tries to talk to me about whatever it is that girls talk about but I guess I just dont understand fully lol

A fun day at an amusement park with the kids today. early morning swim, then 6 hours at park and Mcdonalds!!

I am doing the Calgary 70.3 this weekend. Kind of an afterthought this year. Goal is just feel good at the end.
I'm pretty sure I am not going to be breaking any speed records, but I just want to essentially end the tri-season feeling good.
Then rest of year:
Take a break, volunteer for Canada, then sign up for 2011.
Then MARATHON TRAINING for December!!!

I agree.  With my girls being on a year-round school calendar they are "tracked out" every 9 weeks for a 3 week period.  We always send them to grandma's for a week and it is training week from heaven when that happens.  People always ask if Doug and I are going to the movies or having date nights. Those that don't know me very well think it's weird when I say we're going to bike/swim/run together.

And cogratulations on the bike totals.  Very nice accomplishement and it's only half way through the year!

Home would be pretty funny though.

Actually even better, just start a conversation with them like nothing's going on.  Ask about the weather, etc.

Good luck you racers. Doug, Dave George and Trev.

Very nice gift Doug. Should command a very nice display spot at home or work.

It is nice to be able to train without having to worry about the kids. Lucky people. (me too mine are grown and moved out).  My wife did make a comment though about only having one decent meal during the week because I am gone the other nights with training and the triathlon club. I try and make up for it on the weekends. Last Saturday I made Chicken Marsala and had the brother in law and his wife over. It was great if I do say so myself.

Good luck to all the racers:

Doug - a rough first Oly just sets you up for a big PR at your second
George - I hope you get superb conditions and crush your goals!
Jeff - I'm rooting for you on that sub-20 5k split - wouldn't that be fun!
Trevor - I know you're really racing for the pretty course, not the jersey, right?
and Dino - special good wishes to you as you race in honor of your friend.

Have a good weekend, everybody!
