Yeah - the book can be a dry read. The vids help a ton. TL spends a lot of time telling you why when you only want to know how.

Well, I'm a big why person. I do much better when I understand. What I'm not big on is DO without HOW. I'm only like 40 pages in so far so I assume the rest is coming. So far it's about 10 pages of content spread over 40 with self promotion filling the rest.

Yippeee - UPS just brought me some bike stuff!!!

Imna open it!

My TI stuff came friday. I've been reading the book and so far there is a whole lot of "do this" and "be that" and not a lot of "here's how".

Yeah - the book can be a dry read.  The vids help a ton.  TL spends a lot of time telling you why when you only want to know how.

I'm more of a "why" kind of guy.  I like to know why and how things work, then I can apply them better if I understand what is supposed to be accomplished....  But that's just me.  However, if they completely leave out the "how" that would bug me too.

I think they are awesome and beautiful. Not, of course, when they get your 70.3 axed. Unfortunately we don't get many of them here in So Cal.

I'm trying to be patient and not keep checking the mailbox every 10 minutes.  I'm hoping that my bike components come today and they are coming via USPS with Signature delivery.  That means I'll have to drive over to the post office after I get the card.

I love a good thunderstorm but not when I have a riding session scheduled for that exact time. One thing I don't have right now is flexibility with training windows.

Sprint_DA - 2008-06-16 12:12 PM Hey JDW how's Des Moines fairing these days? Water started to go down at all yet? Your family doing ok in Cedar Rapids?

Des Moines is actually doing quite well.  They thought the levee that we had been working on for those two nights wasn't going to hold up - and they evacuated sdowntown on Friday afternoon.  It held up through Friday night and then let go on Saturday morning.  One area of town, including one of the High Schools was inundated with water.  The water is now going down (about 3 feet from when I went home on Friday night to when I went to work this morning, and continues to do so.  The forecast is for a solid week without rain (let's hope those guys are right, for a change) and that should help immensely.  They had an engineer that looked at the levee that we reinforced and said that it was an engineering feat that it held on as long as it did.  We were pretty proud about that (though all I did was fill bags with sand and stack them where I was told to).  The Corps of Engineers guys that directed that project really knew their stuff.

As for my sisters - one was flooded and one escaped with no damage.  The one that was flooded is a renter, so she didn't lose a whole lot, as I had called her and told her that I was sending guys over to move all of her stuff to Grandma's old house (which I own, but nobody lives in).  I will let her live there until they get things cleaned up.  The guys I sent over used to work for me at the bar a friend and I owned and they are large and strong.  They did a good job.  Very loyal guys that have been through a good deal with me.

The rest of my family seems to be OK (Aunt's, Uncles, Cousins).  Most of them live near the river, but on a higher piece of ground that Grandpa owned and gave them each a piece of so that everyone would live near each other.  I think they were kind of trapped on "the hill" for a couple of days, but all seems well now.  Folks in Iowa City are under the gun now, as are some of the people in southeast Iowa along the Des Moines river.

Glad to hear that everything went well for your family for the most part. I saw the pictures of CR in the paper yesterday and am amazed at how flooded it is. That week without raid would definitely be a good thing for the whole state right now.

The good news is... the Garmin is an excellent training tool.

The bad news is... I've been underestimating my run distances by 15-25% with the car odometer and the Nike+ (which is a POS IMHO and a waste of money). Now I know why I hit the wall at 17 miles in CIM and where my run fitness has gone (couple actual shorter runs with less frequency = lost run fitness). The good news is I can get it back, but its going to suck. I'm just going to ride my bike and do the runs and not worry about it. This is hobby, and I'm still in better shape than 99% of the people out there. Cool

I'm also definitely injured with my right foot, too, so increasing mileage too fast right now - not a good idea. I've got plenty of time to get ready for the marathon, its not until March.

I don't mind the Nike+, but I was pretty sure it was overestimating the mileage.  On the plus side for me, I just got a Garmin 201 from the guy who I got my bike from.  I'm going to try it out today and see how that works.

Gotta say, I really like the low levels of douchebaggery on this forum. I just went back to the one I hung out on for years... first post there in months. I immediately got two total dbag responses that had nothing to do with the thread.

I rode my bike to work today. Then again, I ride my bike to work every day. If I took my helmet off and grew a beard, I could be Yantihuda.

I think that I found that my bike computer is off a couple percent too.  It tells me I went about a mile longer on my 25 miles rides than the Garmin....

What kind of puter is it?  Can it be calibrated?  maybe it is your wheel size - have you checked that it is set correctly?

Well, out $300 isn't all that bad, just annoying. Especially since you'll resent those idiots the whole time.
