March 8 - Solvang Century
---
May 25 - Ojai Century

Oooo - I did the Solvang Century more than 10 years ago - it was a blast with the exception of the headwind near Santa Maria. It's a beautiful ride.

I haven't done the Ojai Century - but used to ride around there when I was first married - it is beautiful there - but there are a couple of hilly sections that can toast your legs.

Sounds like a great season!

Yeah, I've done both rides before.  Fairly hilly but I like to climb

TankBoy - 2013-01-04 1:00 PM All you guys talking about power and intervals has been making me jealous for the past couple of weeks - I finally get to start my LT training block tomorrow with some hard intervals in the mountains and an FTP20 test early next week. Now I an not so jealous. What does everyone else have on tap for the weekend?

Run and swim tonight.  Hoping to bike long tomorrow, but high winds (gusting to 50) and rain might put me on the trainer.  Sunday should be a 10-11 mile run and maybe a short swim.

I just saw some of the PGA Tour golf coverage from Maui.  Looks downright nasty, crazy winds!

Sorry to bug you guys with more questions but, browsing  X-Lab items on Amazon for a rear mounted bottle holder. I like the XLAB SUPER WING, Black  and the XLAB Gorilla XT Carbon Cage (Black).

What do you guys think?

I was given the xlab carbon wing for christmas with two gorilla cages. When I mounted them they were right up against the seat.  I did the on line chat with them and was asked to send a picture so I did. Never heard back.  I called a couple time and nothing. Sent them an email right to tri sports and still no word. Might want to tell them what your putting it on to make sure it works.  I'm going to try and call again tomorrow to what's up with mine. Looks like it should be a sweet set up.

Hey Kev - post some pictures up here as well and maybe we can take a look at it? My wife uses the same setup on a Cobb saddle for training in remote areas (she loves it, BTW) and it is very easy to take on and off, but it does sit really close to her saddle as well. Let's see what you have?

Thanks I will. Probably do it this weekend when I have time to figure it out. Haven't posted any pictures to this site yet.

Here are some pictures, thanks for the help.

Thanks.  Good point on "cold."  It's central North Carolina in February, which could be 32F +/- 20 degrees with snow or rain.  I was told to avoid tights, if possible, because of the streams - they would just get watered down.  I'll bring a few options on the tops.  I've seen everything from s/s tech tee or singlet and arm warmers on some of the fast folks to heavier sweatshirts.

Shoes are Brooks Cascadias.  I don't know if these are the optimal choice for this particular race, but I wanted something I could use on the trails closer to me that are less technical.

I agree with no tights with water crossings. For my trail run this spring, I wore swimming suit bottoms that had an attached skirt. They worked great. I lifted my shirt up for the deep crossings, but it still got a little wet.

Haha! That's pretty clever! I love it. What would you do in the case of colder temps?

For crossings that deep, probably the same thing. That race was in the 50s when we started, so not exactly warm

Kev - the pictures are really small and I am using a smartphone, so it is hard to tell, but is the xLab bracket actually touching the seat or is it just really close? My wife's is within a millimeter or two of touching her seat, and I would guess that it actually does come in contact when it vibrates on rough roads. I will try to get some time to mount it and take some photos this weekend. I suppose the real question is what is your concern? Cutting/marring the seat, or is it hitting your butt? My wife has commented on the fact that she can feel hers when she is climbing and slides back on her seat - but not so much that it bugs her.

What will the ground be like? Likely frozen, icy, snow covered, dry, wet and muddy? I know you said rugged, but I'm trying to picture the rest. Will the air temps likely be below or above freezing?

This is in a old, old mountain range in central NC.  So, it's not big elevations (for NC), but it is very rocky, quick bursts of up/down with some long uphills/downhills.  From reports, it sounds like ground conditions can vary from snow covered, to dry to crazy mud.  I think one of the big obstacles on ground conditions will be roots and rocks covered by leaves.  It sounds like you're pretty focused on the ground at all times.  I backpacked in a different section of this forest a bunch, but I haven't done this section of trail.  I would probably be well served to drive over one day.

I've no advice but just want to say Wow.. Awesome challenge. Have a great race!

They're still hard to see on my home computer as well. Saddle is an Adamo, Road model? I've had the Adamo TT and the Carbon wing. It does come rather close, but did clear for me.

Should be bike & run tomorrow and run & swim the next. Run & swim today. The swim was a little odd. The guy in the next lane seemed to be studying me intently. Not just glancing over, but completely turned to watch. Sometimes he was sitting underwater facing my lane as I came in. He was also trying to match stroke timing. Sat in the mechanical chair for a bit and also walked the side (I was in the first lane). Seemed harmless, but it was kind of weird.

Honestly, I used behind the seat setup for a couple seasons, but switched last year to a speedfill A2 mounted on the stem, with Infinit, with water in one bottle on the frame.  Was very glad during Oceanside 70.3 last year, when I watched several people lose their nutrition off the back in bumpy sections.  I am a big believer in leaving the area behind the seat clean and empty.   NOthing to back that up other than aesthetic and knowing my nutrition is always in front of me.   A2 not that much more expensive (if at all) than an x lab and a couple cages.

Have an easy bike tomorrow.  One of our LBS owners died in the Santa Monica mountains recently (climbs just north of here), not hit by a car (thank god) but had a heart attack and died while cycling with his partner.  Memorial ride is tomorrow, an easy pace ride up the switchbacks, which is our local bread and butter climb here.   May add a little to the beginning or end.   Didn't know him that well but had met him several times, and he was always very helpful.

Running is back at full speed so will also run :20 tomorrow, then about 5-6 Sunday.
