CLOSED japewang - 2013-02-01 4:37 PM Having never done either a full marathon stand alone or IM......there are probably others more versed in it. My initial thought is first stand alone marathon needs dedicated training focus. Then I remembered this is not a first IM. Poconos course would be pretty hilly, as is IMKY if I'm not mistaken. How would you feel about the recovery, wouldn't really have a whole lot of recovery time there.Ok here's the question for you folks. I think I already know the answer but here we go: I think I'm going to pull the trigger on IMKY (my 2nd IM) over the weekend. IMKY is on 8/25 However, I've been eyeing a stand alone marathon (Pocono Marathon) on 5/19 (would be my first). This is 14 weeks away from IM. Thoughts on doing both? What info do you need from me to formulate your advice? |

I think the question would be if the recovery from the marathon would impact your IM training negatively. I would think being so far out you would be ok as long as you figured that into your training plan, but again I've never done an IM |

What info do you need from me to formulate your advice? I agree with Fred. Wouldn't do it in the same year. The recovery costs are just way too high for "mortal" runners who take more than 3 hours. There's a big difference in recovery between the kenyan guy who was gutting himself for 2:10 and the average joe who was gutting himself for 3:45. |

Why do you want to do it? Do you think somehow it would help your IM? Personally I wouldn't do it. At that point in time you should be in the midst of IM training with a focus on building your long rides, swims and runs. It is a time to work on nutrition during those training efforts as well. If it were me, I would focus on the work that needs to be done with those things. I've done 12 marathons and it takes a great deal out of you (although it doesn't mean you will automatically get injured during that training). You will need some sort of taper (2 weeks for me) and some sort of recovery which further limits your IM training. Having said all that, I am doing my 13th marathon in March and my fourth IM in September The marathon has a very specific purpose and gives me plenty of time to recover before I hit IM training in mid April. What info do you need from me to formulate your advice? I think that the real issue here is that you do not really know how the marathon is going to affect you. A standalone marathon is a very different beast from the marathon as part of an IM. It affects you very differently. Some people could do a marathon in May, train very light for a couple of weeks, and then have no problem with a 10 week build to IM and 2 week taper (or so). Others will be wiped out from the marathon, never really recover, and suffer mightily in the IM (if they even get to the start line). It's really hard to tell. As for further information: If you told me that you've been a runner for 20 years, you've trained for and raced half marathons while also biking 100+mpw and run a hard 10K within 7-10 days of racing a half, well that's one thing. I'd start asking more questions, and we might end up at "you could reasonably pursue this." If you said that you've mostly raced 5K and 10K on 20-25mpw or less running, never done even a HIM, etc., then I think it is clearly a mistake. FWIW, the bike at IMKY is quite hilly but nothing crazy. The run is nearly dead flat. |

Extreme Veteran 759 Villanova | Subject: RE: Fred D and Queen Zipp's SWIM, BIKE RUN consistency thread.... CLOSED Thanks everyone . I would have given the same advice to someone in my same situation. I think the mental challenge facing me is that I had made goals to do a stand alone marathon this year as my wife requested no IM this year (for a variety of family reasons). Well, that all changed a couple weeks ago when our situation changed a bit and she told me to go for IM. Now I need to think about reworking my goals I suppose.... |

Master 7712 Orlando | Subject: RE: Fred D and Queen Zipp's SWIM, BIKE RUN consistency thread.... CLOSED Got a 9 mile run in this am. I planned on 11, but was wearing my orthotics and prior to this run my longest orthotic run was 5-6milez, so I played it safe and stopped. I feel pretty good, although some muscles are sorer than they probably should be at this distance. Anybody else run in orthotics? How slowly did you ramp up the distance? We had temps in the low40s for the run- what a treat! |

Expert 1157 Tremonton, Utah | Subject: RE: Fred D and Queen Zipp's SWIM, BIKE RUN consistency thread.... CLOSED Fred D - 2013-01-29 6:18 AM ALSO, who wants to throw down a goal(s) for February?? I'm going to set a shorter swim goal as It's a shorter month and I travel at the end. 40,000 yards in the pool is my February goal. Who else wants in on the 'goal setting' thing'?? I'm all in for a goal: Need something and someone to help push me to get there. I made about half of my goals in January, and so, I've got some 'repentin' to do to keep on track. Goal was 12 runs (check) 7 Swims (oops) 4 Bikes (oops) and Average of 5 workouts a week (Check). There was also a weight goal in there, but well, we won't talk about that one! My January Totals: January's totals: Not my best month ever, but I'm making forward progress. Need to get my distance up across the board. I'll get there. If I can get my swim up over 10k and my run over 40 miles this month, I'll feel really good For February, I think I'm going to set goal of 5 solid workouts a week. Many will be runs, becuase I'm on the road this next week, all week, and it will be hard to get to a decent pool. Bike rides on weekends. So for Feb: 5 Workouts Average/Week; 14 Runs for at least 40 M , 6 Swims 12000 yds , 3 Bike mileage TBD -- That's more than 5 average per week, but Got to have some cushion in there! Now I need the help of the team to keep me on track! Motivation was off a bit the end of the month! Edited by UTTriman 2013-02-02 9:23 AM |

(And I'm doing the same one as in-laws will be in town to supervise the little people in the house). I'm excited for him - we are plotting our summer schedule so that he can "get his feet wet" so to speak and so I can try to get to my goal too.
That's way cool; I did a tri with Mrs. UTTriman a couple years back. Was fun cheering her in at the end! She even took hardware for her age group -- but then there were only 3 in her age group. Still -- hardware is hardware, and she did great. She's not racing now, but I was so proud of her doing one. |

CLOSED japewang - 2013-01-30 4:17 PM My Feb goal is to get my race calendar for 2013 figured out. From there just stay healthy and to be more consistent in the pool and on the bike. I'm really enjoying the running right now. Just got back from a work trip to NYC where I got to run with friends in central park twice. One of my favorite places to run.
With you there, Jeremy -- Nothing beats an early morning run in Central Park! |

Yes, a day completely off of work is essential. and getting a day off work is getting harder and harder in this day of email on our phones, 24/7 internet access, working from home and all that! I'd say a day off of working is much more important than a day off training, from a rest/relaxation perspective. I'm taking today totally off training, spending the day cleaning out the garage and going to a few kids basketball games. Kid #1 scored 8 this morning! her all time high. Kid #2 plays in a few hours. Oh, and I've got a little work to do in there sometime too... Long run tomorrow AM before the Superbowl. I'm going to load the kids bikes in the car, head to the trails, and run while they ride. Should be fun, weather is real nice and they haven't been out riding in months. OK, now I've got to get a little work done. |
