Still resting for my 10K tomorrow.  Last night though I had a fun recovery effort where I rode 30 minutes easy on the trainer with my gf.

Good luck to you too Matt.  I know you've worked hard and smart so time to execute.  Have a good one.

That's awesome...watch out for the hay bales!!

No way would Salty slow down for hay bales. Supergirl would just leap riiiiiight over them and pick up her pace and then pick off her next opponent.

Yes, obstacles seem to be drawn to me in races. Dogs, children, curbs etc. I think I've been unintentionally groomed for these hay bales. Bring it.

Guys, I'm just curious. How are you handling your taper for your respective races?

Steve, it sounds like you are kind of just training through? Is that correct?

And Matt, you just did EZ trainer ride  on your little girly bike and no running yesterday then  taking today off?

puking at the finish line is encouraged/applauded, but start slow and steady... and hit your pace. Puking at mile 1 is not allowed. and run the last 0.1 like your hair is on fire. GL

Heck yeeeaah!

Race smart! And have fun. And no holding  back to pad your progress

Yeah, don't go sandbagging it!!

Good luck and quick feet!

No worries there.  It's not my nature.  I'll crash and burn before I even give it less than my all.

Thurs - 35 min easy run in the morning with 30 min easy trainer in the afternoon

Fri - off

When I ran XC in high school our courses were very much like he describes.  I never ran on a golf course type manicured course.  It was always muddy, rooty, sometimes single track, up and down.  I don't remember ever jumping over anything like bails of hay though.  If that is an element of the course I think I'd want to work a little of that into my prep work.

Yeah, I have yet to do the manicured golf course style course but  in two weeks in Portland we are going to get exactly that. I'm probably not going to alter my training at all though, just keeping my focus on tougher terrain for Nationals.

But see, I got those bales:

more or less training through.  I don't think a taper is as big a deal for a race as short as 5k.  As I've mentioned before, I have five 5k's over the next six weeks so tomorrow is kind of a season opener.  I want to keep building on these races like you would for a short track or XC season.  I have tried to time my last Q2 tempo runs to fall on Saturday morning so these races kind of prepare for and will substitute for those.  This week was monday swim/bike, tuesday speedwork Q1, wednesday recovery run/trainer, yesterday 6 mile easier run, today swim, and as I love Matt's picture, tomorrow is CHARGE!!!  I'll pretty much repeat these weeks with the addition of another trainer session on Saturday or Sunday and a longer run on Sunday.

I came across a pic the other day of me running hurdles in junior high--HAHA!  It was the 80s, mind you, but man did I have the hair flowin, gold chain wearing, real athlete look going on;)  It was a little bit of awesome.

  Lolo is the shiznit.

Mine is a junior high pic.  Contrary to popular belief, I have a limit on how much I'm willing to embarrass myself :)

Did you see she's probably going to make the olympic team for bobsled?

Oh come on. That is a lame excuse.

Wait is this a euphemism, or is she really also a bobsledder?

And if so, no, I hadn't seen that and W.T.F.?  Random and AWESOME!

Former track stars have been recruited for bobsledding for quite some time.  There are some pretty notable track and field folks that have gotten into this.  I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see Usain push a sled someday.

I have a few friends who are professional or former collegiate athletes and really, there is a lot of crossover between different sports.

It's amazing to see them do really basic things like, riding a bike or whatever because their baseline is just so much higher than most people.

Anyway, a little off topic so I'll get back on. STFU, Mike!

Thanks, Mike!Today I finally got to see the result of all my training to this point. I knew that the first 3 miles were going to be tough with hills (especially 2-3), so I tried to hold back. Mile 4 I started to put a little more effort in and clocked a fast mile, which I paid for in the rolling hill portion of mile 5. Once I got past mile 5, I knew I had sub 40 in the bag, so I pushed what I had left until the finish.Final clock time was 39:21, which beats my old PR by 33 seconds and gives me a VDOT of 53.www.strava.com/activities/94093603

It sounds like you have a very common condition that many runners and triathletes experience called patello-femoral pain syndrome. We have seen that runners with core weakness experience this.

Work your weakness. In the sport of triathlon, most coaches agree that you should spend the most time working on your weakest of the three sports. For many of you this will be swimming!
