Kyla---totally jealous you are going to Hawaii, but have a great time.  Where are you staying? where are you eating?  Hopefully one trip to Mama's Fish House, my very favorite restaurant in all of Hawaii!!!!  Enjoy that 17m run.  I did a couple long runs there and while hot, they were spectacular.

Twin-For the CT, I have the Polar Strap with that little plastic thing attached to it.  I find it more annoying...it seems tighter.  I usually slip a little BodyGlide below the girls so that strap doesn't chafe and I'm good to go.  And no, there won't be pics!

Had another swim on part of the IM course today.  Things went totally fine, but my training partner and I saw two muskrats swimming close to shore. Can't imagine what I would have done if I knocked into one of them.
Gross!

So is it bad that my son just fell off his bike and got a bit of road rash on his knee and we took a picture?

LOL, he told me at the pool yesterday that he wasn't going to work, just swim and play all day while his wife made all the money.

jvanis - 2010-08-17 3:34 PM My wife and I went in today to get our shots for our trip in November, walked out feeling violated!

A string of shots including Hepatitis A, Yellow Fever, Polio Booster, and something else I forgot, plus I have to go back in for my tetanus booster at some point.  Whew, arm is quite sore today, now to hope I do not get any side effects from them in the next couple weeks, one was said to take around 8-10 days before headaches etc could set in from it.

my first navy physical i walked out feeling violated.  all was good right up until the old doc told me to drop trow, turn around and bend over.  till this day i can hear that tube of ky making that pfffft noise.

then there was the time i had a colonoscopy.  not so bad becasue you're knocked out.  but they fill you up with gas to get a good view.  then when you come to out in the recovery area all these hot nurses are around and i'm farting like i crushed a case of guiness the night before.  thankfully they were'nt smelly farts.

so, its been a crazy last week.  we're kinda sorta getting settled in.  the moving truck arrives tomorrow then things should really start settling down.  our house is at the end of a long dead end.  should be fun to watch what this 18 wheeler is gonna do.  steve you should be here at 8.  and bring coffee... ha.

thanks for all the inspires, pm's, email, fb posting, etc...   they are awesome!!!    all you guys are AWESOME!!!

some of you caught it over on fb, jack's first day of kindergarten was today.  crazy!!!  we took him in to get registered this morning.  we figured he'd start tomorrow.  everyone at the school was so incredible.  after filling out all the paperwork they told us he could head down to his class.  i really wasn't prepared to hear that.   neither was jack as he all of the sudden got very quiet and put his hands in his pockets.  2 things he does when the nerves hit.  but then we found out he could ride the bus home and he was good to go.

we were given a tour of the school, were assured he would be fine and went on our way.  still having a bit of a time getting my mind around the fact the my little man started school today.

we walked down to the bus stop about 15 minutes early, heaven forbid we miss him.  i have it all on video and lots of pics but i can't transfer the files right now.  i'll post some soon.  also pretty cool kyla's kids were off and flying on their own for the first time while jack was heading home on his first bus ride.  margarita's, chips and guac!

braves have a day game thursday against the nats so i'm planning on heading down there with june.  i told jarrett i was pulling jack.  that didn't go over to well.  ha!

got some running in but that's about it.  lots tougher here than houston, that's for sure!

thanks again all!  you guys rock!

Sure, William, don't post for 2 or 3 weeks and then just come lurk on here hoping for some sport bra pictures...pervy!

Immature, I know.  But someone had to make the comment.  Just glad to be back.

(Oh, and did some training recently with my brother and his girlfriend, who was like one of the top 20 American finishers at Kona last year.  We did a 2.5 mile OWS, and she totally "chicked" me, but it was a lot of fun.)

Has anyone upgraded to the newer Garmin HR strap?  Is it more comfortable?  I had a glorious month off with no HR strap and putting it on yesterday, it was extremely annoying and started to chafe again at the bottom of the hard plastic part.  Should I invest in the newer strap?

Thanks!

I have the new "premium" strap, and it is night and day different.  After a little bit I forget it is even there, much less bulky and rigid, so it just conforms to your body and feels much more natural.

I didn't even know there was a newer strap...

Kim, do you use your HR monitor with the strap-hook-things or do you just slide it under a jogbra? I do the latter, but with looser-fitting bra tops it often doesn't register properly. Fortunately I know my HR by feel pretty well, but that's still frustrating.

Is this newer one designed such that you could slide it under a bra w/o having the strap go around your back? Or does the softer strap mean you do need to hook it all around? (Am I making sense here?

The newer one looks like it is a much smaller plastic piece but still has the strap that goes all the way around.  The one I currently have has the strap hook things like you mentioned, but I actually never thought to use just the plastic piece without the straps...but yes, I slide it under the sport bra.  Not sure about the answer to your question.  Here's a pic
http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Premium-heart-monitor-strap/dp/B0029M3NSS

It isn't the strap that bugs me, it is that big plastic thing all the way across my chest!!!

Thanks, Jeff, I may get this one...will have to see if I can find a good deal!

Yeah -- I just slide the harder plastic part under my bra. Sometimes I get an itty bitty bit of chafe right in the center of my chest, but I never feel it when running.

If you get it, let me know what you think and if/how it could be used without the entire hook strap. I HATE having things around my chest (yes, even bras, which I try to wear as infrequently as possible as clothing permits).

Pictures, please ...

Staying at a condo in Kihei. We go pretty low-key on accommodations and throw our money at diving instead. I loves me some good fish tacos, so often after a morning boat dive (6am departure, back around noon-ish before the trade winds hit) we like to hit hole-in-the-wall places in search of our fave tacos. My sister and b-in-l will be there part of the time as well, staying at some fancy place in Wailea. We plan to crash at their pool a couple of afternoons. And we have reservations for several dinners but I couldn't tell you where. Really, aside from diving we're kinda boring as we're not beach or sun people. So we dive, eat, take a good nitrogen off-load nap, read, research and ID fish/critters we saw on the day's dives, have happy hour, eat dinner, watch a movie or some tv, go to sleep and do it all again the next day.

Suzy (or anyone) -- got any good tips on good places to do my long run?

Good to hear from John -- didn't realize your moving truck wasn't even there yet. Nothing like hitting the ground running -- huge props to Jack for being such a trooper. That is really major!!

Oh, and my son, going into 5th grade, hasn't let me hug or kiss him anywhere near school for a few years now. But last night he wanted some cuddle time before bed, so the little boy is still nestled in there, thankfully.

Have not!! Our favorite spot thus far has been Bonaire. We did Cozumel several years back, but it was within a year or two of the hurricane and much of the coral still hadn't recovered. In Hawaii, my fave place to dive is Kona. We have soooooo many places on our "We want to dive there!" list, but the last three trips have all been to Hawaii just for the sheer convenience factor. When the grandparents have the kids for a finite amount of time, we hate to lose too much time to travel... We have fantasies of the kids diving with us when they are older...

For us non racers, when does your season officially end? do you plan to take time off? ramp right back up for Fall running season? or sit on a couch and watch Football?

Beyond excited here!! Up at 3:20am today (when alarm was going off at 3:55).

Kim, I will be in your city this morning (well, south, at the airport)... but the layover is only about :50 so there's no chance for visits. Bummer! Plan to be eating lunch on Maui this afternoon!!

I'm thinking my season will end 10/10/10 and I may take a short break. That'll be after the Portland Marathon. I don't see any more tris this season as I don't want to mess up running. Never say never, and maybe a sprint will call my name, but I haven't seen my bike in a couple of weeks. That said, kids start school 8/30 so NV and I may have to take a celebratory spin (even though I always get a bit sad when school starts up -- it means my little squirts are one more year closer to leaving me!)...

GOOD LUCK RACERS!!!

I am racing Sunday in a short  sprint. The big draw is that ot is in my neighborhood! I will practically fall out of bed and be there. Funny thing is while it is short (250 yds pool swim, 10 mile bike and 5K run) the bike and run are HILLY! Should be interesting.

Right now my season ends with Augusta on 9/26. However, I might do the Washing 1/2 on 1030 if Augusta goes well and I feel up to it.

"Off-season" I plan to get the last of the extra weight off and fix my run!
