Sorry I've been slack on RR's, lol I think I am caught up now.

Very nice racing lately everyone!

LOL, same story different week for me, crashed Sunday, but came back to finish 16th, banged up my knee a bit and bent the derailleur hangar, nothing that can't be fixed pretty quickly.

gotta run - 2011-11-14 9:05 AM

Congratulations to Rachel, DJ, and Brent on their PRs! Andy, congrats on your first 10k and amazing weight loss. Roni, congratulations on finishing Rim Rock, and the long drive home! Loved the pictures!

Jayne - I wouldn't focus too much on heart rate right now as you build your run volume. As long as you feel like you could maintain a conversation and you're able to hold your pace through the length of the run, you're probably doing okay. If your breathing is labored and/or you're crashing in the later miles, you're probably running too hard. Are you following a training plan right now or just building volume? FWIW, I'd avoid speed work and just focus on safely building volume with easy running.

Julia,  I'm just trying to build volume right now.  That said, I have been trying to focus my runs a little more than I had been in the past with four runs a week, each with a different focus (long, pace, speed, fun).  Primary goal has always been and remains, building my endurance and volume WITHOUT injury.  So far, so good.  Thanks for your input.

Question for the group:

I finally got a HR monitor a few weeks ago and have started logging some HR data.  Here's the data from today's 8.25 mi. run.  It was four laps on the trails at one of our county parks.  I like the consistency of my pace (even though it's slow), but my HR seems like it's higher than it should be for a long run.  The problem is, to keep my heart rate lower, I'd practically have to walk--a lot.  Now, keep in mind that these distances are uncharted territory for me and I've only been running since January.  So, should I stop worrying about it and just run, or should I slow down and walk some on these long runs even if I don't feel like I need to?  My goal is to build over the winter and do my first 1/2 marATHON in April. Any thoughts??

LapTimeDistancePace/SpeedAHRMHR
123m 09s2.07 miles11m 13s /mile153163
223m 50s2.07 miles11m 30s /mile160170
323m 10s2.06 miles11m 15s /mile160170
423m 57s2.06 miles11m 39s /mile161171

define "trails"

Dirt, and chipped wood as a base.  Some areas are single track and some are about 3 ft. wide.  No big hills just a few small ups and downs.  Is that what you mean??

yep. wasn't sure if we were talking trails as you describe or community type bike trails concrete or similar surface.  my hr is always higher on trails at the same pace as on the road (conditions falsely equal as well).  even when fairly flat.  (kyla!)  maybe you experience something similar.

so... my .02,  i'd go reed julia's post again.  then if you wanted to find a 5k or 10k the week or so prior to the start of your 1/2 marathon program and use that as a LT test, do it.  suzy can help you out with all the details on that.  like andy said another word for mhr is death.  so if you ain't dying then don't worry about it.  and if you do die then that sucks, but you won't have any more worries.  so don't worry about it.

no mary's please.

All that work for PBR?  Really?  That was a reject beer in college along with Linies.  Plus you get all dirty.    I'd much rather find a 10K blast up a bunch of hills and puke on my shoes.

That sand looks like pure hell to ride thru... add some beer on top of that and I can see this becoming a BIG spectator sport.

I really don't get it though... Is the beer drinking actually part of the race?
Guess I need to go watch one sometime.

Yep, I quit all that right after they eliminated wineskins and body passing at the football games.

Is it wrong that I had to google image "wineskins"? Only to see it and realize I had one of those back in college?! Bartles and James transferred nicely. Ah, the good old days.

I remember wineskins and body passing.   We needed distractions at our football games:

"The deepest years of Northwestern's football depression were 1976-1981, during which the team won three games, tied one, and lost 62."   (exactly when I was there)

Did I spell it wrong?  wineskins were mandatory when going to a Badger game when I was in school.  So were 8am wapatooli parties.  The team stunk! You had to get so drunk you had no idea you even went to a game.

PS. When I was at the UW, we were the #1 party school!

Yeah it's pretty fun to watch. As for the beer, cross has a thing called "hand ups" where as it sounds you hand something to someone riding by.  Could be twizzlers, cheeze its, dollar bills, bacon and sometimes beer.  The guys near the front of the race aren't normally grabbing the beers unless it's in a tandem or other fun type of race.

Normally the beer is being consumed by the spectators and guys that finished racing so you heckle the guys going through the sand that faceplant or struggling up hills.  It's a big party atmosphere.

And rumor round town has it that there will be a 3rd person in the MG participating in CX this weekend...

No wineskins when I was in college, I think my parents had one... ; )

We used to sneak airplane bottles and ziplock baggies with bourbon in them into games.

And same with me Virginia Tech was awful when I was there, LOL, now due to the football team success, my grades and SAT's wouldn't have gotten me into the school today.

Slide show from this weekends Race .....  And to answer your question, PBR handups, who can resist!!

That sand looks like pure hell to ride thru... add some beer on top of that and I can see this becoming a BIG spectator sport.

I really don't get it though... Is the beer drinking actually part of the race?
Guess I need to go watch one sometime.

Is it someone that had some pics posted on FB?

I believe she did.

And I think she just got some new MTB shoes...
