Very nice racing lately everyone! LOL, same story different week for me, crashed Sunday, but came back to finish 16th, banged up my knee a bit and bent the derailleur hangar, nothing that can't be fixed pretty quickly. Why do people participate in this sport again? http://www.flickr.com/photos/teamwisconsincycling/sets/72157628000203627/show/ Slide show from this weekends Race ..... And to answer your question, PBR handups, who can resist!! That sand looks like pure hell to ride thru... add some beer on top of that and I can see this becoming a BIG spectator sport. I really don't get it though... Is the beer drinking actually part of the race? Yeah it's pretty fun to watch. As for the beer, cross has a thing called "hand ups" where as it sounds you hand something to someone riding by. Could be twizzlers, cheeze its, dollar bills, bacon and sometimes beer. The guys near the front of the race aren't normally grabbing the beers unless it's in a tandem or other fun type of race. Normally the beer is being consumed by the spectators and guys that finished racing so you heckle the guys going through the sand that faceplant or struggling up hills. It's a big party atmosphere. And rumor round town has it that there will be a 3rd person in the MG participating in CX this weekend... Is it someone that had some pics posted on FB? I believe she did. Oh goody - I am so glad to be in the know for a secret race... |

Yes. I'm skeered. Just did a search thru BT on bike trainers, didn't really come up with many answers, other than, like most things, "you get what you pay for" and most recommend the fluid style. Main concerns are: Looking for some MG advice/input/experience... Thoughts? |

Kurt Kinetic is most popular and with the fluid model you can approximate training with power due to the resistance curve (Tony can probably explain that better). Personally I had a cycleops mag and had no issues with it. It was a bit noisy, but not overly so. Lots of LBS in this area have spin classes on different trainers - maybe you could take your bike down and put it up on a couple of different ones and see what you prefer. BTW, some folks swear by rollers instead of trainers, but given my accident prone self, those look like a trip to ER just waiting to happen... |

I have had one for years and I like it. They aren't for everyone though, which is good if you want to pick up a used one. If you do buy one, give it a month or so before you say you don't like it. It just fits a bit different I think and it takes some time. I didn't like mine at first then I seemed to get used to it and didn't have any more issues. |

Honestly I don't know much about trainers, I have a cheapo from Performance that I take to races and a Computrainer I picked up used for 300 bucks a few years back. On the cheapo performance trainer it has a resistance lever you can move to add or lessen, and after that I use my gears to make the ride harder or easier. Pretty much does everything I need and I can hear the TV while riding. We've had it for 4-5 years now and it gets loaded and unloaded at every race so it's been banged around a lot. Computrainer is awesome for workouts, I can put in a workout and resistance changes as it goes along. New they are over $1000 bucks, but they last forever. I found a good deal on mine, I think Doug and Andy bought used ones also. The Lemond trainer looked interesting, you just hook your bike up to it and put your chain over the cassette on the trainer, so you don't need to use your own rear wheel. It had gotten good reviews when it first came out, not sure what it goes for though.

You used to be able to rent an Adamo from Trisports for like 30 dollars for 30 days to try it out. If I remember right the rental fee was applied to the purchase price if you pulled the trigger afterwards... Adamo was not for me. The Cobb feels much better (still not "perfect" though) |

Kim, I can't believe you remember that face stomping story - very impressive. Yes my oldest daughter is racing her first cyclocross race this weekend but was terrified to go it alone. So, being the supportive Mommy I am, I told her I'd ride with her. My Doug has been trying to get me to race cx for 2 years -we'll see. I'm not real confident about this whole flying mount/dismount thing but if I want to get faster at sprints next year I'd better give it a go. I'm sure Doug will post videos of me killing myself - stay tuned for a laugh. Jayne, that is such a cool race! Awesome!!! Roller vs trainers = spin class!!! Edited by tahrens 2011-11-15 2:50 PM |
