Music is technique-driven. Oh, and swimming, biking, and running aren't? Of those three listed, I think running is the least impacted.
Agreed, but improving form will improve performance. |

Sensei![]() | ![]() Spokes - 2008-07-25 12:05 PM Well, its kind of ego-deflating when your X is putting you down in front of your children because "you don't work hard enough and so-so does work hard and you can beat anybody if you work hard enough" because that's simply not true, dude. And I'm afraid that whole attitude is getting embedded in my kids. It just eats at me and this is not something I can easily dismiss, because they're at an age where they can be so easily imprinted. Seems like that is something you should look down on HER for, not yourself.... You give her WAY too much power over your self worth my friend..... |

Racing especially. That's why I'm starting to shy away from using time goals. I think they create a false sense of what one should be doing in a race. I would have to agree with you there. I mention I'm doing an IM, and people ask "how fast do you think you are going to do it?". I don't care! (ESPECIALLY for the first one). I just want to finish and not injure myself.... i understand that - but I am such a goal driven individual, that it is hard for me to rationalize that. that's my personal issue - but it is hard for me to overcome. Oh, I understand exactly what you mean. I'm not saying that time-based goals are bad. I think they are useful, and I think they are necessary, to some extent. However, I also don't marry myself to a time goal for any given race. Or I make it fairly broad (I want to run sub 21 for this 5K). This way you're not tied into too tight a pace for the race. And this is where the experience comes into play. You need to learn how your body is responding to what you're doing to be able to give yourself an accurate goal for the race. I think this is something many people aren't too good at, and pick a goal that ends up being beyond their abilities for that day/race, and crash. I know, this seems contradictory. But you gotta walk before you run, and crawl before that. I think that newcomers get too involved in time goals, and could be better off focusing on other things. Of course, I know you are right. I was talking to some people after a race with a friend of mine that belongs to a local club. He asked me how I ran and I told him I was happy, that I had gotten under a 12 minute pace and probably was going to get to my goal of 11 by the end of the season. This chick kind of smirked and made a comment. I was getting ready to walk away when my friend absolutely tee'd off on her (which really kind of embarrassed me, but I know that he meant well). She came over to me later and apologized and everytime I run into her at an event she comes up and talks to me, but still, it bothered me that someone thought that kind of thing about me because of my time. Dollar is always preaching patience to me - but I was a very good athlete all of my life before I got sick and finishing BOP does not sit well with me. Finishing MOP doesn't really sit well with me. Hell, I got a bronze nedal at the Transplant Games and I was a little upset because I couldn't give my donors family a gold. I know it's irrational, I'm just sayin'. Well, its kind of ego-deflating when your X is putting you down in front of your children because "you don't work hard enough and so-so does work hard and you can beat anybody if you work hard enough" because that's simply not true, dude. And I'm afraid that whole attitude is getting embedded in my kids. It just eats at me and this is not something I can easily dismiss, because they're at an age where they can be so easily imprinted. Now that - is irrational. Dude - take it from a step-father. There is no replacement for you unless you wish to be replaced. It is as simple as that - no argument. My daughters love me a lot, but given the choice, they would choose their father. I don't have an issue with that. That is the way that it should be. All that your ex will do by trying to come between them and you is build resentment in them towards her. You may not see it while they are young, but you will eventually see it. Kids are not stupid and they are fiercely loyal. Your kids love you, there is nothing that their mother can do about it. The only person that can change that is you, so don't. Show them love and caring as much as you possibly can and they will continue to think that you are the greatest man that walks the face of the earth. No argument, no exception, no discussion. It is the truth. Any fear otherwise by you, is exactly that, by you. |

Runner | ![]() jdwright56 - 2008-07-25 2:59 PM I know it's irrational, I'm just sayin'. Hey, I'm right there with you. I know what it's like, because I deal with it, too. I ran track and XC in HS. So it can bother me that I can't go out and put down a 5K time like I did back then, especially since I was doing less miles. I'm starting to get less bothered by it, but yeah, it's still there. |

Maybe it's different for me. I'm not doing anything that I did in the past, so I think I can ONLY get better... Keeps me happy.... But I understand. If I went back to basketball, high jump, or volleyball, I could get a little disapointed that I can't fly as high as I did as a younger lad... But for tri, the sky is the limit so far, and all I do is improve. Maybe when I stop, I'll start something else.... Life is cool that way.... Lots to do. |
