We are working on the details for that. We are first working on a Spring break trip to SF as a family. Maybe Kim can give us the low down on what we should do there. I have my ideas already, but the local word is more than welcome.

Avoid SF.  Go south to San Jose!!   Wait.......spring break?  When is yours?  Is that when Boston is?!?

Serious question for the group:

So I was hit with a nasty cold that ended up turning to pneumonia.  I have been down for the count since Tuesday of last week.  I think I am a day or two away from being able to get back out there (also 5 lbs lighter).  So what are your thoughts about the Marathon I have been training for February 4th?  My last week's mileage was 50.  My 2 peak weeks start next week (53,60) with a 2 week taper.  So option 1) jump back in see how it goes. 2) run but scale back mileage and goal time.  3) scrap it and get ready for ironman training.

CdA training plan starts the week after.

My vote would be for #2......but why lose the goal time?  Scale back your mileage based on how you FEEL....lung issues are not worth messing with - ever.  You may be surprised at what a long taper does for you.  As many wise people on this MG have told me - the hay is the barn.  Make your next runs based on PRE - and don't overdo it.  Get lots of rest, eat healthy, finish your meds.  If your air is as crappy as ours right now, use a treadmill.

Scale back your training and expect the re-entry to be tough for about 7-10 days.  Don't alter the goal for the marathon. You are doing it for one reason, to BQ.   Give it everything you have.  If you wind up short, you will have lost nothing.  If you don't try, you'll always wonder if you could have done it. 

Here's my insight.  I got food poisoning 3 weeks before a marathon and it lasted for a week.  I lost 7lbs (7% of my bw).  The re-entry was very tough, I had zero energy and I thought the marathon would be a total bust at that point.  I felt pretty darn good the week of the race, went in with my same goal and ended up PR'ing by about 20'.

Your mind and body can do amazing things.

No tangos for me.  I still need to come up with some more detailed goals, but for now:

- sub 45 10k

- sub 1:40 HM

- sub 2:30 Oly

- sub 6 hour HIM

 

Jayne: definitely don't rush it.  I held off an extra year before I tried my first Oly and I held off an extra year before my first HIM.  I've now pushed my first IM out to 2013 because I want the time to build a deeper base.

Kim: have fun, but definitely take it easy on that foot.

So, since we're talking about HMs leading up to HIMs, how important do you guys think they are during the training?  I'm trying to decide whether to sign up for one this spring or not.

A couple things I'm considering:

- I think doing the half mary in the lead up is great for my confidence for the run.

- Last year I had a huge tendency to prioritize my running at the expense of my biking.  Given it was my first year doing tris, and prior to starting I could bike, but not run, this imbalance may have made sense - for a time.

- If I follow the training plan as written, it only has me doing 1.5 hour runs at the time the half mary takes place.  My last half marathon took me 2:10, so I'm not actually at a good mileage amount at the time of the race.

- I am debating increasing the run mileage the plan calls for anyways.  Bad idea?  Okay?  It tops out at 2:10 runs, and I feel like I would feel more confident going into it with a couple longer runs.  I'll only do this if I can without sacrificing bike mileage.

Some background:

Last year I did two half marathons.  My first was pretty brutal, while my second was stellar (for me).

I will be doing a sprint and Oly triathlon as part of the HIM training.

 

What HM are you looking at doing. I have only done one in the fall. I learned enough from it and my long run was 19km. I don't think I would train to this distance again. 17-18km maybe. But I have the confidence I can run the HM now. And don't worry about slow. I was like 2:30 for my first one. I am sure the second will be faster...

 

I am looking for a a HM for the spring to do here in Ontario or close by. My A-race is not until September.. but since I finished my HM I put on well... significant weight...lol.. but I am back on track as of last week.

I guess that's me, according to Suzy's article from the other day, I not only chose a January marathon, I chose to do a half marathon the day before it!  Geesh.  Oh well, never one to follow conventional wisdom...I am all about having fun at both races as long as my silly foot holds up...Bringing my camera with me...will also be wearing my red shorts that Kathy put big yellow buttons on so I can run in costume complete with black top and Mickey Ears. 

We are flying out on a red eye tomorrow and will arrive in the ATL at the crack of dawn on Friday morning for our connecting flight.  Will Paul's best friend (not nice calling either of the boys fat, Suzy!) be around???   

And since I am "racing", I will wait until next week to work on those 2012 goals. 

I don't think the Christmas decorations are going to come down before we leave...arrrrgh!

A Lady and her husband I ran with up here and got started in one of our learn to run clinics is down there doing her first Half Marathon this week. She is so nervous I have been getting message after message from her...lol

 

But doing the Half then the Full right after. I might mention to her how some of us are Real Crazy...

 

Have a good weekend.. I seen the medals at the Detroit Expo and Disney is now on my list of places to run a HM.

Not racing, but doing a 5mi. Poker Run on Sunday.  It's a prediction trail run with the local running club.  Haven't done this before, but looking forward to it.  Best part is it's only a $3 donation and they have hot chocolate. 

I'm struggling with my 2012 goals.  I was all pumped up about doing my first HIM, but now I'm wavering big time.  Just the thought of it makes my stomach churn.  The only one that fits my schedule would be early in July, and I just don't know if I would be ready.  My main goal over the winter has been to improve my run and I think I might keep this focus over the summer too.  I don't want to be stupid and kill myself trying to focus on too many things all at the same time. 

My highlight of the summer is going to be pacing a runner at the Leadville Trail 100 and I really want to focus my extra energies on trail running and lengthening out the distances.  I figure if I'm patient and keep that goal in mind, it will benefit me in all of my triathlons next summer and in the future. 

There, it's decided.  Going to do Sprints and Olys and focus on improving my run.  Cool  No shame in waiting on the HIM. 

Nice, Jayne, don't you love when you work things out aloud (or at least on the internet!) and come to a conclusion that is final!?  Love your focus and keep up the good work, that HIM will be there when you want it! 

Yep, sometimes you just have to put it in print to convince yourself.  Patience is not one of my strengths, but I'm working on it :-)  Good luck at your race/s.  Will we be able to track you??

2012 Goals:

Goal #1 -  Go sub-6 at Door County Half Iron July 22nd.  

Goal #2 - Go sub 1:45 at the RnR half marathon St. Louis October 21st.

- This one is a real stretch considering my PR is 1:55 and some change.

Goal #3 - Lose 10 pounds by May 20th (Carlyle Oly)

- This one is also a real stretch considering my other hobbies are cooking, drinking beer, and watching sports :-).

I spent a lot of time thinking about my '12 goals.  I am usually not great at sticking them out there, but this year I am changing my ways!  Some of them are really STREEEEEEEETCH for me, but you can't do things you never imagined if you don't try.

IM PR: Current PR 2011: 13:21, Stretch: Top 20% of AG (27% '11)
10K PR: Current PR 2007: 45:42, Stretch: Sub 45:00
Steady Swim Pace at 2:00/100 or below (2:12/100 '11)
FTP greater than or equal to 200W (4.34W/KG)

 

Suzy,  where is your FTP now?  Do you have data to show how much you improved over the last couple of years?  4.34 w/kg is awesome.

Jatne: Waiting to do the HIM next year is a good idea. This is my 4th season and I am going to do my first full IM at the end of it. The first year was sprints and one olympic. 2nd year was the sprints, 2 olympics and 1 half. 3rd year was mostly the same.

So here we are. We are not all the same. we have different strengths and weaknesses and we develop at different rates. It takes time to build the base needed to do the longer distances and a lot of the base is built doind long slow distance. It takes time. Doing the HIM next year gives you that time, You made a wise choice. What I do , or anyone else does this year should not influence anyone else here. Some MG  peeps are doing ultras. I will never do that. Looking at logs from last year I cannot imagine running 2800 miles in a year.

Yeah, beer pressure should do it.  Right now, it's an open weekend for me (if I can get permission from my wife).

No racing this weekend for me.

2012 goals - real simple:
- 1st half of the year run a BQ marathon.  And I'm calling out the big guns after Miami - I am going to send Lowell an email to see if he can help me out.

- 2nd half of the year - sub 6 hr. HIM at Beach to Battleship.  I think the timing will be much better for me.  I've found that cold morning swims and late night trainer rides are too much w/ everything else in my life.  More daylight and warmer temps will allow me to squuze more in w/o driving myself crazy.

- I also have a secret Feb. goal but I will only share that after the fact.  :-)

Good luck Kim - the Goofy weekend is an awesome experience.  I honestly wish I was running it again this year!  Can't wait to see the Mickey pics.  I could never run in costume.

I have been very happy with my workouts lately. I see improvement in all areas and I feel great. Having said that, I think my brain is turning to mush. I could not find my car keys this AM and had to use th back up keys to get to the gym. Then when I got home I found my keys but forgot my glasses at the gym and had to go back. Embarassed At least I do not ofrget my gym stuff or shoes Laughing!

Thanks for all the feedback on the half marathon.  You know how deep down you know the answer to something, but you ask anyways hoping somebody will give you a different answer?  Anyways, no half marathon in the spring.  It doesn't fit in with the plan, and I need to stop thinking I know more then the person that wrote it.  No adding run mileage.

So, with that in mind, I've decided on one of my main 2012 goals:

Trust the plan and follow the plan.

I do have to change the rest day (as it calls for the rest day on Mondays when I have a coached swim program), but for the most part, I'll be following it as written.  The one exception I'm making is to do a 10K race one week into it, but there's a "win your weight in beer" draw prize for that race.  I've got to do it.  (Actually the real reason I want to do it is because I'm doing it with a bunch of friends)  It actually almost fits in the plan, as it calls for a 1 hour run that day.  I'll just have to decide whether I should actually race it or do it at a training pace.
