Who used shoes clipped in during T1 flying dismount and taking feet out of shoes prior to T2?  I am trying to cut down my transition times.  I was supposed to do the second coming into T2 at my last sprint but forgot...

A friend showed me that during that same race, if my time equaled his Trans time, I would have went up about 7 spots.

I also did put on arm warmers during T1 so I would not freeze.  And had a few seconds issue with my lock laces in T2, but that seemed to be only difference.

I did both at my last oly.  Made a clear difference in my transition times.  The flying dismount is much easier than the flying mount, imo.  Youtube has some videos on it, and there's a video on here too: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=1488.  After he sets up his transition area he demonstrates coming into and out of transition, and he does the flying mount and dismount.  Takes some practice.

Thanks, great video.  I will practice it a few times before sunday and see how confident I feel.

The best thing you can do IMO is mount and dismount your bike like this every time you ride (assuming you can safely do so).  That way it just becomes second nature and you don't even have to think about it.

Personally, I always do a flying dismount and mount if the race allows it.  I can't view the video here to see how they do it but my mount isn't really a full flying mount, I put my left foot on the left shoe, push off and swing my right leg over and go.

Anyone do the ITU style of dismount with the leg over the top tube?  I swing mine around the back - over the top scares me...

For sprints and Olys where I don't use socks, I'll usually leave my shoes clipped in.  I don't do a "flying mount" though.  I've tried practicing it, and I suck at it.  One day I'll practice it more and perfect it, but for now I'm happy with swinging one leg over the top tube, then stepping on my shoe to get going.

As far as the flying dismount...just make sure you slow down enough before you put the first foot down.  Last time I did it, I was probably still going 10 mph, and my foot was not so happy about the impact it had to absorb.  Even the spectators did a "ooohhh" as I dismounted...but it wasn't worth it as my foot was a bit bruised after the race.

Oh man, that's a thing?  I always thought they swing around the back, then bring their inside leg forward between the outside leg and the bike.  But I haven't paid close attention.

I will probably use this safer for me version this sunday, shoes clipped in and step over and go.  Good advice about slowing down!

I couldn't either.  I assume they don't enjoy the luxury of coasting much.  So, it's hammer, hammer, run.

I didn't know that was ITU style.  That's how I do it.  I don't know, somehow it just seems easier to me.

I haven't been brave enough to try any sort of fancy mount, but maybe having the shoes clipped in and stepping onto the bike like you do would work.  I did try a couple times (in my neighborhood) starting with the shoes clipped in, but I was slow getting my feet into the shoes (I don't have tri-specific shoes...I have one with a little turning mechanism with a quick release "lace").  I felt like it was faster to just put my shoes on in T1, but easy enough to pull my feet out on the fly to go into T2.

Hmmm, thought this was going to be an easy week.  Failed to notice today's brick of a 1M swim/40m ride/7m run.  I mentioned it to my son-in-law and his response was "isn't that longer than the tri you did at Pacific Grove?  The answer was yes on the ride and run.  I was really happy with the result though.  The swim came in >5 minutes faster, the bike at the same pace but over a course of rolling hills as opposed to dead flat - and at training not racing effort.  The run was also nominally the same pace as PG, but at a lower effort level.  Overall it tells me my training is going in the right direction.

...Went to my LBS which is a Specialized dealer with a loaner program to give them a try. They measured my backside and everything (turns out my wife is right: I have no butt), and gave me a Specialized Toupe model...

Do they carry or did they mention the Specialized Sitero model?  Has anyone here tried it out?  I haven't seen it talked about on BT but most of the people over on ST are obsessed with it.  It was a bit more than I was looking to spend this time but it looks like very few people on ST that have tried it haven't loved it.

They said they were supposed to get them within a week. I would have tried one if they had one because you know us triathletes; we want to try the "latest and greatest". I put my replacement Koobi on and rode it this morning and was very happy, so I'll just stick with it.

BTW, I've never tried keeping my shoes on the bike or flying mount or dismount. I just don't feel coordinated enough.

How much time change was there?

I was traveling all week but trying to follow the treads (all this work travel is putting a dent in my BT time )...anyway, this was a taper week for me.  I have my second Oly of the season on Saturday and 3rd overall.  Last two were 3:22 and 3:08, so shooting for sub-3hours on this one...a little worried because of the continuous work travel which has put a dent in my training but based on last weekends training I should be ok as long as i don't try to kill the bike.

Good luck to Matt and AnnMarie also as it looked they were racing this weekend.

As for breakfast on race morning, my routine is water, glass of orange juice, oatmeal and a banana.  Then i might eat part of a cliffbar during transition setup depending on how i feel.

Only my second season, so have not attempted the flying mounts and dismounts.

Happy Friday and have a good weekend everyone!

I followed the ST thread and it seems like people are getting less enthused with the Sitero as they actually get a chance to try it.  If you do decide to give it a shot, might be worth talking with the shop and checking on their return policy (or seeing if they'll have one as a demo).

Still not sure what I'm going to do about a saddle, but I think I might try my old Adamo Road again and see if I (still) hate it.

Had my first real incident with a jackhole driver list night while I was out riding. First time I've had my bike on the road all year, and it was spectacular. So much more comfy on the road than the trainer.

Anway, this older guy in a crap-box pickup must have thought it would be fun to blow his horn right behind me (I was maybe 3-4" off the edge of the road due to some sand) then rip by me about 2 feet away. No cars anywhere else to eb seen on the road. Scared the crap out of me, and was probably a good way for someone to wreck. I was PO'ed, swore at the guy as best I could, but he'd passed by quite a bit by then.  I soon turned around, and headed home, as I was near my turnaround anyway. This guy seemed aggressive enought that I pulled my phone out and set it to video just in case he decided to make another pass, but did not. If anything the ride home went by quick as a combo of anger and adrenoline had me ripping away at 23+ mph. Grrrrrrr......

Good luck in your race this weekend. I am also shooting to improve my OLY time on my 2nd OLY race but I doubt I will. This course I am doing is much much harder then the first one I did but we shall see...

We actually did a transition clinic last night and it was interesting.  You really do have to get into the habit of how to get on with your shoes already in the pedals.  As I tried this, I found a few times, because I am used to clicking in, that I would take a stroke with the shoe still upside down and now only did the shoe drag on the ground it made me feel like I was doing to crash as it caught.  Will take some time getting used to.  I don't see any benefit right now to trying to trying a flying mount and I am not that coordinated.

You also have to be somewhat coordinated when you are on the bike trying to get your foot in the shoe and paying attention to people in front of you.  Not sure if I am ready for this, but will practice it some I guess.
