2126 Baltimore, Maryland | Subject: RE: 2018 Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Always Open Rough day yesterday. Long story short, I got a flat with about 9 or 10 miles left in the bike. Rode on it for about 6 or 7 until it went all the way flat and I was riding on the rim. There was a really bad accident right before (girl found unconscious in the woods with a cracked helmet...super scary. Turns out one of my friends knows her), so obviously all the support went to her. I had about 2.5 miles left or so and just started walking. Walked about 2 miles (in my bike cleats, hamstrings were so sore), before the guy came to fix my tire. I was feeling REALLY good until the flat so I'm super bummed. Added at least a half hour on to my bike. Will post a RR sometime this week, but I'm at the beach and have a bunch of studying to do. |

3 Norfolk, Virginia | Subject: RE: 2018 Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Always Open Sorry, I havent had a chance to post anything recently. Sorry to hear about the wreck too. I didn't get alot done last week. 500y in the pool and a little running. Question for everyone, I'm a horrible freestyle/crawl swimmer (working on it), during an actual race how much/all/any do you swim freestyle? The longest I've ever swam was a mile but it I did it all side and breast stroke. Also, made the jump and bought a road bike (tried to stay entry level and not break the bank too bad). I wasn't sure at first but the colors really grew on me as something different, so I decided to go with it. My work is ironically also doing a tri challenge for the month of July. 4000y total swimming, 100mi bike, 30 mi run. So I'm participating in that. Currently 400y/17mi bike/3 mi running down. In case you're interested here's the bike. Edited by Lunchbox66 2018-07-08 5:30 PM (unnamed.jpg) Attachments ---------------- unnamed.jpg (734KB - 4 downloads) |

2126 Baltimore, Maryland | Subject: RE: 2018 Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Always Open Hey Drew, Might not be what you want to hear, but I do all freestyle. You don't have to, but it's typically faster. I also grew up swimming. Side/breaststroke may be faster for you so may be a better way to go until you get more practice with freestyle. Are you taking lessons? Also, I love the colors of that bike! |

I got a flat...not a big deal at all compared to what she and her family must be going through. |

Regular 866 Central Coast, CA | Subject: RE: 2018 Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Always Open Drew, welcome to the group! For swimming, there is nobody on the course "forcing" racers to swim a specific style. During my last Oly I took plenty of breast stroke breaks and still managed to finish the swim in a reasonable time. For my first ever sprint I did mostly breast stroke as a I wasn't comfortable in open water. If you want to compete for the podium then freestyle is a must due to speed. On the longer courses (ie: Ironman) there are time cut-offs that may necessitate faster swimming however for sprint/Oly distances I've yet to see that. Been a while since I've updated here. Good news: at my last visit with my doctor I was down 12 lbs. and my blood work was much improved since December and I managed to stave off cholesterol medication for at least another year. Bad news, the last few weeks I haven't done as much activities and I may have re-gained a bit of weight with the holiday BBQ's and picnics leading up to and over the weekend. Time to get myself back into the groove again! |

Not great, but at least something. Followed the ride with a short brick run and then some strength training. Again, stacking st on cardio isn’t ideal, but you do what you can when you can. |

2126 Baltimore, Maryland | Subject: RE: 2018 Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Always Open July SBR: 6 (I don't think I'm hitting 30, lol). Went on a 3.5 mile run yesterday. Legs are still tight but overall felt really good. Was hoping to find a lap pool around here but have not been successful (I'm at the beach with my fam). Good news about the girl who got injured in my race this weekend, she is alert, responsive and improving! Not out of the woods yet apparently but heading in the right direction it seems. |

July SBR: 13 Hot and hilly hour run this morning after I slept too late and missed masters (and the cool temps!). Gonna try to get to the pool this afternoon after I take care of some work, but I have no idea what the lap swim situation is at the pool at 5pm |

Member 3143 Carbondale, Illinois | Subject: RE: 2018 Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Always Open July SBR: 14 Nice 1700yd swim this afternoon after work. Pool is very crowded in the evenings and swimming is less fun without all my masters friends. Guess i need to remember that next time i ant to be lazy and sleep in. Bike is back from the shop. Broken front derailuer, so i guess it isnt a surprise it wasnt riding correctly. |

Member 3143 Carbondale, Illinois | Subject: RE: 2018 Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Always Open July SBR: 15 Nice 1500m in the pool this morning on what masters coach calls "Quality Wednesday", which is swimming sprints on lots of rest. We had a new guy in our lane, so lots of rest was 50s on the 2' kind of rest. It really does let you sprint all out when you have that kind of rest to look forward to. I have to say though, by the end, I was really tired. Great workout. Later on, strength training and a 60' bike ride. |

Been there. I practiced in front of the TV, and taught my daughter how to do it, too. A flat will probably still cost you a podium (my PR flat repair on the road is like 8 minutes LOL...), but at least you won't have to walk in your cleats! Glad to hear that lady is OK - I've been really lucky on my spills so far. Edited by jmhpsu93 2018-07-11 4:41 PM |

Member 3143 Carbondale, Illinois | Subject: RE: 2018 Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Always Open July SBR: 16 60’ bike ride here. I rode a somewhat hilly route here by the house, but with traffic, it was slow. Focused on pedaling the entire time, no coasting. I wasn’t particularly successful at not coasting, but I did better than I have been lately. |

256 | Subject: RE: 2018 Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Always Open Well, that strained rotator cuff is definitely sticking around. I think something else may be going on, so back to the doctor. I've decided not to enter the tri I'd planned on doing next weekend--I just don't have the time in the water and don't want further injury. Plus a friend has been diagnosed with cancer so my time is split. I've been super active and busy, but not being able to swim has put a damper on official training. Which puts my SBR for July at only 5. No way I will hit 30 so I'm going to now aim for 22. If I actually do 25 I'm going to buy myself a.....a something. Need to think of a good reward, LOL. Sandi |

July SBR: 18 32 VERY hilly miles on the bike today followed by a brick run. Then, just because I'd been looking at the darn lake the whole ride, I took off my shirt and jumped in the lake in my tri shorts and sports bra. Ha! If my other could only see me now. I didn't stay long, because man was it HOT in that lake. It was certainly not the refreshing dip I was expecting. Oh well. You live and learn. Anyone racing this weekend? I've got another big weekend of shed building. Will this project ever end?!?!?! |

2126 Baltimore, Maryland | Subject: RE: 2018 Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Always Open Had a good 5 1/2ish mile run at the beach yesterday. Actually made it from my house to the beach, so that was nice. Felt pretty good and had a good pace throughout. July SBR - 7 I think? |

Member 3143 Carbondale, Illinois | Subject: RE: 2018 Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Always Open July SBR: 19 Not a great training weekend. I bailed on my swim on Friday and my long run on Saturday. It was one of those, life got in the way weekends. This shed building is really kicking my butt and having my dad down all weekend, every weekend is killing my training mojo. Up this morning for masters practice, wherein coach tried to kill us all (or, at least I think that was his end goal). Run scheduled for later, but I'm thinking the indoor track at the gym, given the heat and humidity. |

I did manage to get a run in this morning before work however not much else this month besides my short bike commutes in the morning (just a mile). My next race is looming at the end of August (trail half marathon) so I need to get my legs moving and out on the trails. |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: 2018 Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Always Open Hello every one - glad to see that the group is humming along and that y'all are continuing to be a bunch of Bada55es! With a crappy job (Oh man - is it it crappy) and a divorce on my table, I haven't worked out in forever. However - considering I'm 100 pounds over weight and my brother had a heart attack last year, I figured I needed to get my butt back into gear if not only to help with my physical health but to buoy my mental health as well. I'm currently in Northern Michigan for the next 4 weeks and my bike is at home. So, I went out and bought a bike for 5 dollars at a garage sale, got it fixed up for $67 (new derailer, brake wire, and a tune up), spent 25 dollars on a helmet from walmart and viola - I have a usable bike. It's not pretty (I'll post some bike porn later this week) but it works. So I came home and went for a ride. It sucked. The seat was 3 inches too low but I finished. I have no idea how far I rode just that my butt and legs were sore when I was done. I'm gonna call that a good day and a nice start. My goal over the next 3.5 weeks is to be a machine like Gretchen (somethings never change) and work out according to the trinewbies 11 week sprint program (http://www.trinewbies.com/tno_trainingprograms/10wtp.pdf). I don't have the money to sign up for a triathlon this fall, but I will try to volunteer for a race just to get my self back into the spirit of racing. And hopefully, the work outs will help improve my fitness and my mood like they used to in days gone by. I hope all is well with all of you and I look forward to talking to you tomorrow after I walk for 30 minutes. Dave (DQ) |
