I have a moment I'd like to share with the group.  Last night my oldest (the one from the cx race) asked to ride the trainer.  Later a friend sent me this message.  I burst into tears.

This picture inspired me today, so I thought I'd share.  Personally, I think this is how we teach little girls to grow up to be good strong women.  We show them first hand.  Show them that it takes work, dedication and sacrifice, but it's fun and you'll win some and lose others.  I just love this photo of my friend Tracy.  Way to go super mom!

i didn't know chris other than his posts over there, but to be honest i've had a pretty hard time with this since matt's (printer86) post.  watching linda come in on sunday i went over there and just happened to click on the post when someone posted about being close to home...  then an acquaintance (gman) posted something about it and from there it was absolutely gut wrenching watching all this guys friends find out about what went down.  then to here about his family family watching it.  then, like most others heading over to his profile and looking at that pic with his kids.  like i said i didn't know the guy but i guess being the same age with little ones its obviously hit home.  damn.

i guess my take-a-away from this is what to ask your doc in the annual physical.  i mean, i always here "gotta get a physical" every year.  ok, but what do i ask?  what do you guys ask.

dino i bust your balls about EN but i think its great.  i'm really sorry for the loss of your teammate.  the tribute thread is awesome.  will keep his family and friends in my prayers for sure.  this really sucks.

Big hugs to all of you, my MG family...when I hear of news such as these two young men dying much too early and unexpectedly, it really hits home. We all do this stuff because we love it. Every day is a gift and when I see pics like Tracy posted of she and her daughter racing CX together it really brings joy to my heart. Being good examples and "role models" inspiring others, having fun...it kind of all goes together...kind of like this MG. Thanks for all you do.

Very sad news indeed.  Not sure what else we can do as far as physicals.  I think at our collective ages most risk factors are so low that unless you have family history or a symptom, it is hard to find those things.  Plus because we are all so active that it is assumed that we would have less problems.   I just try to be vigiliant about my health and live each day to the fullest.  Good or bad you never know what is around the corner.

I know that, and it is also what makes being a part of this MG great .......  I didn't know Chris except on the EN and ST forum, but these tragedies always seem to hit home and really keep in perspective what is really important!  What I thought was a "tough week" suddenly became NOTHING!!!

And to answer your question, I don't know what questions to ask really.  I plan on trying to get a better handle on that while hanging out over beers with both of my Doctor in-laws over the holidays.  I'll let you know if I learn anything.

The article with his wife's perceptions is gut wrenching.  Just think if you received that call.  So sad.   I feel like I lost my dad way too early and these kids are so young.

Ask for a carotid artery ultrasound, a  coronary calcium scan and a small particle ldl blood test. The first 2 are about $100 and the later about $65.

Three years ago I had some chest pain and heart palpitations that caused me to end up in the emergency room a couple of times (ended up it was a bit of anxiety and indigestion).  I ended up having both the ultrasound and the calcium scan.  Came back with good results (whew...) but I will be having them done again in the next year or two.  It did finally cause me to take my health more seriously and I now get annual check ups and take my cholesterol medicine religiously.  My experience is that (for men anyway), it takes some sort of freak you out  - I might be dying - wake up call to get with the program....

Thanks for sharing that, Andy.

Is it my imagination or do these sudden race deaths seem to happen more frequently to males? I'm talking about the running race deaths -- I feel like I have read about both genders in triathlon-swimming deaths.

Not that it makes me feel complacent given that I am a woman, mind you...

Yes, we males are the most at risk, this is a line from the study of sudden cardiac arrests in US marathons:"The prevalence of SCA was 1 in 45 531, and 1 in 128 316 runners died. 30/31 runners with SCA were male with an average age of 46.7 years (range 19–82)"

A local doctor who was a well-known triathlete died a couple of weeks ago, he had an aggressive form of kidney cancer, this gave me a shock, he was incredibibly healthy:http://www.sunshinecoastdaily.com.au/story/2011/11/02/flying-doc-loses-fight-with-cancer-brian-barr/

Yoo-Hoo Peeps!  Tomorrow's the big day---who's toeing the line before the turkey?  If you have a special strategy for your 5K, 10k or 13k (Undecided), lay it on us!

If you're lazing around just waiting to get a muffin top at least reflect on those things you're most grateful for and share them!

And if you want to answer both questions, go for it!

I'm starting!  I'm running the Berbee Derby 10K.  I haven't been able to run it since '07 due to having a Fall injury every single year since then. This is a race I worked on developing and it has grown to almost 7,000 people.  I am beyond psyched just to toe the line with so many people I know.  It is awesome to watch whole families show up where at least one member has never challenged themselves this way before.  Watching them at the finish line is GOLDEN. So jubiliant and proud.

In '07, my time was 47:16 and this was back when I actually called myself a runner and not a triathlete.  I want to beat that time.  I have yet to do it in my last three 10K attempts since MOO, but I am going to give it my best shot!

Thanks for sharing the link.  It sounds like he was an amazing guy and it really is hard to believe considering his physical condition (10 hrs, 11 min at Lake Placid).    I have recently been looking into the tests that Doug mentioned because my Dad had his first heart attack at 53 and I figure the genetics are against me.  I'm definitely going to set up the tests the next time I visit the US.
