Hellllllllllllz YES! Oh, that is awesome!

How does one learn how to pole vault. It seems like the consequence for failing could be pretty high. I also feel like I should already know this, but don't :/

Enlighten me.

How did I learn? Kind of like you learn anything. Just start with the basics (learning how to land properly is high on the list.) Learning the different elements that go into a jump and then just practice. You aren't jumping high at first and you are landing in the mats (hopefully.)

It's quite technical as I'm sure you can imagine.

You stinker, I just spent fifteen minutes watching pole vaulting youtube.  It's ridiculously BA!

It DOES seem incredibly technical, and it's just hard for me to imagine having the confidence to put my feet up over my head hanging onto a pole :)

Have you ever thought about decathalon?

They don't have decathlon for women. It's heptathlon. And it includes hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200 m, long jump, jav and the 800. (Which I got to watch at the Olympic trials in Eugene BTW! BADAZZ)

With the exception of shot put in 7th grade and my Lolo Jones photo, I've no experience in these other sports.

*And sorry, I can't stay away. For some reason I think you'd do great @ PV per your alleged "fears"

We only had B&W that long ago.

Yep...cinder track and I got the scars to prove it.  I bit it going over the last hurdle during the 300y hurdles and would up picking that crap out of my forearms and knees for about a week.  And yes, I still won the heat.

We also had to wear 5/8 to 3/4" spikes that looked like you could kill someone with them.  And it was a huge PITA to change into the 1/8" spikes for triple jump.

OK, haha, I'm laughing imagining you shot-putting, you know, cause a shot is like 1/10th your total mass:)  I looked to see if they have PV camps for brand new clueless adults, and apparently they do.  LOL, I'm sure my husband would think I had completely lost it if I told him I was gonna try that.

OK, back to that thing with all those events :)  I looked up decathlon on wikipedia and I'm confused; they kinda, sorta, sometimes have it for women?

Are the athletes that do those things--heptathlon, pentathlon, decathlon--good at all of the events?  Don't you just have to be good at a couple and decent in a few of the others?

I have matching scars on my knees from a cinder track :)

Triple jump?!  Hurdles?  What were your other events?  You're crazy tall too, right?  6'4" or something?

I've never seen women do decathlon in a meet. Not to say they don't I guess. Sometimes women play in the NHL so ...

Are they good ... well, that depends, right? Are we talking Olympic caliber? Yeah, they are pretty good at them all. But of course all athletes tend to excel at specific events. For example, a stronger person tends to be better at the throws and sometimes PV (if we are talking about dec.) and maybe a little slower at the sprints. Or some of the better sprinters aren't as good at the 1500.

Overall though, they are VERY well-rounded athletes.

Ha! I went to a small high school in the south that didnt offer much in the way of sports for girls. Cheerleading was their idea of girls athletics. I spent my time hanging out in the barn with the horses. So no "track". And "field" was something that needed mowing occasionally ;-)

400, 800, 300 hurdles, triple jump...it was usually a pretty tough turnaround when our meets were after school.  Sometimes only like 10-15 min recovery before the next event.

And yeah, I'm about 6'4", so the hurdles were interesting.  I don't know if it was anything that could be called "hurdling"...more like run, jump, run, jump.  I'd have been one hell of a steeplechase runner!!

Welp, if our weakness is defined as "overcome our embarrassment of our high school track pictures"...I think we got that one covered.

Yes the 80s and hair...and fluro...and shoulder pads...and oh the horrible mental pictures.

I haven't been around much because I have been trying to finish writing the last of my papers so that I can graduate from my Masters next month. I had five to finish off. I am now down to one which I am half way through. I never thought that I could write so much BS about organisational culture but amazing how the thought of being done for good can motivate one to dribble about nothing for 3,000 words. My consistency suffered a bit last week in order to get the other four finished but that's just how it goes sometimes.

It sounds like you have a very common condition that many runners and triathletes experience called patello-femoral pain syndrome. We have seen that runners with core weakness experience this.

Work your weakness. In the sport of triathlon, most coaches agree that you should spend the most time working on your weakest of the three sports. For many of you this will be swimming!
