Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Manatee à trois After reading some of this maybe I should count my blessings that I am single! At least nobody is hovering in my kitchen, at least once the fur kids have been fed. Like Ben, I'm kind of a basic food person. I can be made happy with some combo of pasta or Asian noodles, rice, tofu, sauce, cheese, fish, veggies, fruit. My go-to "big dinner" is salmon, sweet potato, stir-fried veggies. I'm usually too tired and too hungry to care about making anything fancy or impressive-looking. It does bother me that almost NO whole-grain products are available here. There were some in the past, but the store that used to stock whole-wheat pasta no longer does, brown rice has become harder to find, and the one bakery in town that had real whole-grain bread went out of business. I feel like my diet is really not ideal--I take supplements for that reason, but there is really not much I can do about whole categories of foods not being sold locally. There actually IS a "fitness food delivery" service here run by a trainer downtown, but it is individual meals and targeted toward body-builders and weight-loss/fitness types ( low carb, high protein, low fat). Doesn't exactly meet my needs. |

I was super upset at first, because this car is giving me so much headache I don't even want to think about it, but right now I'm just chillin' with some old jazz going on, and eating tuna/selery sandwich. I wish I had some wine or beer too (hey, I cannot drive anyway..) Thankfully, it's "only" the clutch, or rather somethig that was supposed to to hold the clutch, so the repair should not be $$$. Still, super frustrating. I keep resisting to buy a new car, mostly because I just don't want monthly payments, just no.... I am also planning to move to a new place in spring, so any monthly car payments are very not welcomed. Ugh.... Anyways, waiting for towing, which should come within an hour. Just chillin' in my lonely vehicle on the lonely shoulder, at almost lonely highway |

Seattle | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Manatee à trois Originally posted by brigby1 I'd say wear your regular shoes. In all the racing I've done, trail running shoes have only been absolutely necessary in one and it was because of many many snowfield crossings. Originally posted by melbo55 Originally posted by marysia83 Originally posted by brigby1 Thanks for your input, Ben! Yes, it does say limestone. It's just whenever I see "trail" I am thinking Ann Marie, Salty, and TJ.... and their crazy stories Here's a link to a map, which shows aid stations: https://www.allcommunityevents.com/naperville_half/nhm_map.pdfThis one shows elevation, which also does not mean much to me: https://www.allcommunityevents.com/naperville_half/nhm_elevation_gra... Anyways, looking forward to have fun. And some new experience Originally posted by marysia83 Trail runners: anything unusual I should expect in trail half marathon? This is my very first trail run, I don't even remember why I signed up for it (8 months ago it sounded like a good idea, or I just didn't even notice it was trail). I do not have any fancy shoes, just regular running ones, the weather should be nice (sunny and 72 degrees), so no worries about rain/mud. I am not planning to push too hard, just enjoy the views around while running in a relaxing pace. Think it's this one? It says crushed limestone and looks like a nice pathway through a park area. Probably not really going to be much of any more technical than the roads. Any shoes you have should be fine. Figure out the aid stations/water stops, as was mentioned and have an idea of what the route should be. Hills don't really look like anything substantial, just stay patient on them. Especially going up, keep the effort the same, which means you'll slow down as needed. Basically just things you should do at any race. It's usually when things get more into dirt and single track that they really get tricky (or really interesting!). The pathways look wide enough to drive a truck (which they do for maintenance) and may have horses on it. ETA: Something like Frozen Gnome up in Crystal Lake may have more like what Ann Marie was getting into with potential obstacles or watching your footing more. I can't remember others in the Chicago area at the moment, but have done others up in Wisconsin. Looks like it is very flat, perhaps an old railroad bed, aka rail trail? Many of them utilize crushed stone. Feet above sea level is on the left. There is only 1% grade gained or lost at most throughout, indicated by the colored legend at the top. While the area between miles 5-6 may look like a hill, it's only a 10 foot gain over a mile, going from 715 feet to 725 feet. Should be flat and fast, have fun! There are a good deal of trails like that in the area, but not sure this is actually one of them. There really aren't substantial climbs in the area, just some quicker ones in some places that can put a little sting in if you're not careful. I've never liked the program that the course site used to show elevation. It takes too broad of an approach and just never really seemed that accurate. I happened to come across the other one that shows some more detail, but still don't think there is anything to worry about. With it being Naperville, think they'll have some really nice forest and meadow areas to run through. |

This was last night, so hopefully you weren't out too late and you're okay for getting to work, etc this morning. Not a fun way to usher in the weekend I feel you....we just had to replace the engine in J's car. $$$ that I would rather go elsewhere, for sure. |

But I was waiting ......5 hours..... for the towing. The driver kept getting lost (don't ask me, it was just a straight highway, with only one car on the shoulder....), and when my battery was going down I had this vision that I will just stay there forever........ Anyways, we are all safe, today is a new day and I am staying positive (unless the repair costs $$$$$...). I am trying to get into a new awesome apartment with my kids next spring, and until I get approval, I don't want to get another loan and monthly payments, so here's the dilemma. But let's really hope no more car issues. For me and everyone else Happy Friday everyone and have a great weekend! |

Hopefully you can take Public transit to and from work, that makes not having a car bearable for a little while. |

Seattle | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Manatee à trois Go racers go! I'm racing, actually! Racing might be a stretch. It's less organized than that. Everyone is to use Strava and run about 20 miles south on the PCT to this somewhat remote (less so in the summer) cabin in the woods for beer and bbq. Just some updates with me, as I know i've been absent. I've been trying out a new club and really enjoying it. Somewhat out of nowhere they offered me a spot on their competitive team. Other than the great team, it's actually cool because I'll have the opportunity to contribute some public facing content, work with some cool brands and do a little coaching. Also, the team goes a bit beyond running (although that is the core) and includes a more broad designation of moving in the mountains. One of the coaches is an ex profession cross country skier which I think is really, really cool! Work has been really neat as well. I think the news article is finally going to come out next week, I'll be sure to share. On the other hand work has been pretty consuming and I'm working on my boundaries and work life balance.

Good news that you didn't have to spend the rest of your life living on the side of the highway, especially without beer or wine. Perhaps a good idea for the emergency kit in the car? Glad it's only the clutch I came back off the trail a few weeks ago to discover my alternator belt was shredded. I had to drive my car off the mountain without power steering (not a big deal when you are traveling faster and on smooth road but quite difficult on slow, rough forest service roads) and hope to goodness there was enough battery power stored to run the car for an hour back to Seattle. We made it though, AND I was able to buy the belt for like, 11 bucks and the part store and replace it myself (with some borrowed tools from the shop) But there |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Manatee à trois Okay, have to ask. Apparently I do not know modern English. What is a TW or TUW? Sounds like something I could use, if he/she/it cooks meals, but I don't know what it is. Now Karen will vent! (First-world problems, I know.........): I am kind of in post-race limbo. I am an inveterate dreamer who is lost without some seemingly impossible goal to pursue, and now that Worlds has come and gone (and ended up as somewhat of a nightmare), I'm kind of lost. Next year it is in Chattanooga, which is really inconvenient from Vietnam, even if I managed to qualify. My boss has said if I qualify (from where? Vietnam? Cour de Alene will be crazy competitive since in the US so near Worlds) he will support me with getting the needed leave, but it sounds like the trip from hell. Between the trip (24+ hours) and the jet lag, I think it would be really hard to race up to my ability, plus I would have to fly back the day after the race--any leave granted will not be generous. That sounds awful, but it just can't be at this point early in the school year, when we are setting up classroom routines and doing important assessments. I need a revenge race, big time, but I have no more personal days left this year! So it looks like my next race, other than maybe the spring sprint series in Singapore, is going to be Cour de Alene 70.3. BTW did you know that ALL the 70.3's in China are offering Kona slots? Of course, that involves doing a race in its inaugural year in China (if you've lived in China for a decade like I have, you will realize that is a scary proposition from a health/ safety/ logistics standpoint. And one is a river swim.) That would be the perfect solution to my revenge race issue. I race well when I am mad, and a Kona slot would sure be motivating, but unfortunately I could not get leave even to make the 2-3 consulate trips required to get the visa (a much more complex process from here than the US, due to the poor relations between Vietnam and China), much less actually go to the race. Sigh. Toying with the idea that maybe I should just do a full IM instead, find a race next summer. If all I can do, basically, is train for the next nine months, why not? I have time. But do I really want to spend my weekends doing 6-7 hour trainer rides, or same amount around the industrial park? Or do 3 hour runs in the spring heat here? That is well and truly scary. Plus I don't think I've run a marathon for over a decade. The marathon was probably my best event, but never my favorite. Just not sure I have the right mentality or life setup for full IM. I like to redline in my races; do workouts and races that have a lot of intensity and don't go beyond, say, a solid morning's effort. Not sure full IM is my thing! I had promised myself I would try an IM when I turn 50, if I am still around and healthy. That's in three years (well, 2 1/2 by WTC rules). Not sure I want to push that date. Thoughts? |
