Suzy - I'm so sorry to hear about Scott. I hope he recovers quickly!

Steve - great pics as always! I love Avery's fist bump with Kona's nose.

Linda - nice job on the hilly run!

John - I'm glad you caught a ride home. Good to hear a story about a nice motorist!

Kim - I was able to avoid thinking about the backin up song for my entire long run! I do carry my iPod, although I listen to news podcasts on my longer runs since music makes me run too hard!

Anyone -

Looks like I overdid it last week, and my right calf is barking at me. It tightened up the last 3 miles of my long run yesterday, although it didn't hurt as long as I kept to a slower pace and/or ran on the grass. I've been RICEing since I got home. It doesn't hurt when I walk, except right after icing, which tightens it up. It feels tight going up and down stairs, but not painful. I have had calf strain before, where something went pop and it immediately hurt to walk and running was out of the question. This feels less serious, but I don't want to aggravate it. Any thoughts on how to handle it?  Thanks!

I started watching the Backin' Up thing and my kids were there... they know how to read... not totally appropriate! Whenever Dave and I launch videos, they come running -- often the videos are funny and tame. Often not, ha ha!!!

And not to go into the music/no music debate because it's totally to each his own... Kim, I appreciated your comments the other day. I tend to run w/headphones, although on most weekday mornings I listen to NPR and local news, and scroll among music stations during commercials or boring stories. Long runs I like music, but am often just zoned out. Keeping in mind that not all races are headphone-friendly, and that there is no such thing in an IM, I do run from time to time w/o tunes and usually enjoy it and do just fine. I do use it as an escape if things get bad (like on my long run the other day!)!! FWIW, Portland IS a headphone-legal course. Last year Abbe and I chatted the first 15-ish miles, then went to our tunes. This year I don't think she and I will run together, even though our goal is the same. We are training differently (with the same coach -- kinda cool) and quite honestly I think she's gonna kick some bootay and I ain't gonna hold her back!!

To your calf, Julia... I have been doing nothing but giving my girlfriend Abbe $#*$ since she bought some compression socks a few weeks ago, and wears 'em. But she is loving them and said her calves feel great. I don't really get calf pain, so can't help, but maybe you would be a candidate for compression socks or sleeves (for recovery and/or running, take your pick). Be good to your leg and your body!! I hope it heals up quickly and doesn't hold you back at all.

kkcbelle - 2010-09-05 3:31 PM Glad you made it home safely, Fats. Was the white pickup guy a cyclist? Very cool that he was there for you!! I would have given you a ride back for free!! So what up with the broken chain? Do you carry a chain tool? I do usually... don't know how to use it, but a friend once said it's a good thing to carry and hope that someone will come along who knows how to use it, LOL! I swear, I hate the mechanical side of cycling. I mean, it's all well and good... until something goes wrong. Then it sucks.

Funny. A chain link tool is one of the easiest tools to use. The only thing to be aware of is to NOT push a pin all the way out. Leave it prtruding from the link and it will be easy to reverse what you did and drive the pin back into a link.

Not sure what you could do with a chain tool, I guess if you also carried spare pins, you mioght be able to fenagle something back together.  Though never heard of carrying a chain tool with you on a ride.

John, did you have to provide the dude... you know... favors for that ride home?

Maybe he liked the way you looked in spandex?    He knew only 2 things came from texas and didn't see any horns????

I have learned this the hard way. That little pin is impossible to put back in.

Suzy - the sore spot is on the inside where the gastroc connects to the tendon, right about where that lower gastroc label line is pointing. It's also a little sore farther up, closer to my knee, but I don't think that's the problem spot. Compression has been helping a lot, and I've been making some progress in loosening it up. I'll see how it is tomorrow and take another day off if it's still iffy. Thanks!

If your chain breaks you can remove the broken link and keep riding. The shorter chain may meann that you cannot use your lowest gear in the back with the big ring in the front.

Try some massage therapy. I had some issues earlier this year and even just one massage made it feel better. The other thing you might try is alternate heat and ice. Ice to keep any swelling down and the heat to increase blood circulation for recovery.

Couldnt you pop  a pin out and put it back together again? Little shorter chain, but would get you home?
Edit: Oops I see Doug got it as well. Tony, i thought you were a bike guy. Come on now. Even  knew this one.

And, to the other point, I think dude knew he was from Texas. Everything's bigger in Texas right?

Happy Labor Day to all, hope no one is out laboring too much.

Did a little "retail therapy" yesterday, and I finally got my new Garmin HR strap to replace the hard plastic one and tried it on yesterday.  Felt very comfy.  Hopefully I will stop getting weird readings, too.

Also purchased a pair of Saucony Kinvara's which I hope to break in slowly.  I have been trying for over a year to change my heel strike to more of a mid-foot strike, because when I consciously do it, I have a lot less achiness in my feet, ankles and even calves, but I came to my own mini conclusion that perhaps my current shoes (Saucony Progrid Triumph's) are actually hindering me because they are weighted very heavily in the heel.

I may be wrong about this but I wanted to try a more evenly designed sole, and these actually look really good (IMO), and felt super comfortable at the shop.  (and they were only $72 instead of $165 for the Newtons) Since I am not training for anything specific right now, it's a good time for me to give it a try.

Julia, I hope your calf feels better today.

Watch the wear on those Kinvara's I stayed away from them after reading a few reports (with pictures) in the runnersworld forum about extreme wear on the soles after not many miles on them.  Though there were also reports of those that didn't have the wear, really liking them so maybe they just had a bad batch.

I went with the Saucony A4's, a flatter shoe, less drop from back to front.

And as far as the chain tool you could put it back together ( I actually had that in my post but it ended up being an extra long post, so I took it out)., but it just seems to be something that happens so infrequently that carrying the tool doesn't seem worth it to me (watch me break a chain on my next ride...)

WHATS UP ROB!!!!!

kyla i have no clue why it broke.  i didn't have a chain tool on me but i understand what doug is saying and think i might carry it now.  it a "mini" that works great.  i couldn't care less about 20 bucks.  and no i don't think it is or was necessary for me to do.  the dude was stoked when i whipped it out after telling him thanks again.  maybe in a way i'm just hoping to really encourage that whole pay it forward thing when i see so many stories about a-hole rednecks in trucks.  odd you think there is more to the video then a remix of some eccentric lady on news cast.  everyone gets offended by something, i guess.

running with an ipod.  i used to see middle school gym classes running in memorial park back in houston.  40-50 kids, everyone had an ipod in.  my first thought was great they're running.  close second was how sad that is.  kids should be enjoying the environment of the run and each other, not adding to the social incompetence of today's video game kid.

hope everyone is having an AWESOME day!!!!  neighbors are firing up the grill in a little bit.

Yeah getting ready now, though unfortunately it's a bigger game for Boise than us, they win, they play pretty much no one else until their bowl game, we still have Miami and a few other good teams to play then the ACC championship (if we make it that far)

Glad it's feeling better for you Julia.  I had a pretty severe calf strain about two months ago.  I was sidelined from running for about four days.  The week before, I bought some Zoot calf sleeves and decided to wear those for recovery and then worked them into my workouts. They seemed to hold the muscle in place.  I highly recommend them if needed.  Hopefully it's a non issue though.

Also, I just wanted to thank you guys for the awesome responses to my RR.  I thought about you all while out there on the course last week - and believe me, there was a lot of time to think! Smile  You guys are great!  For now, I have decided to get back to what got me into tri's - mountain biking.  I can't wait to get my bike out tomorrow.  During the past week, I've also gotten to work on my golf game.  What a novel idea considering I am a golf professional.  I may have to re-earn that title.

LOL - I was thinking that Saturday night after we left a wedding at a winery.  Kris was the designated driver and I was the designated drinker.  Car seemed to be doing donuts on the way home!  Was fine in the morning though so guess I didn't overdo it too much.

Happy Tuesday People!!!!

For the drunks in the group, try some Pedialyte.....used to use it all the time in highschool and college when I fell into the bottle...Boones Farm, Mad Dog, if works for pretty much anything.

Doing some last minute shopping for this weekend, a little more organizing and then dancing around the house doing the countdown!

Make it a good day!

Question about compression.   Ran 10 miles on the trails this weekend without compression and plan on 12 this weekend with compression to compare.  My question is, how/when do you put it on during a race?  My compression is the sock version but don't know if taking the time in T2 is my best option.  Can't really wear the socks during the swim and I don't think they would stay on during a wetsuit strip anyway.  I haven't worn them for the bike and don't feel like I need them.  Also, does anyone have a reason for calf sleeves vs socks?  So far I like the socks as recovery.   Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Steve, the guy in the capris and pink top actually has an interesting story.  His wife was racing and didn't make the swim cut off.  Her husband was racing too but was standing at the water's edge waiting for her at the time cut off.  She had at least 12 family/friends there to support her (matching pink shirts, balloons, etc) and it was heartbreaking to see them all around her on the beach afterwards.  But the most inspiring part was she and her husband were standing in front of me to register the next day.  What spirit.     Can't speak to the dork in the tennis shoes........

Have to share a nice biker story.  A girlfiend and I were out riding in the country (corner of Tingen and Friendship for my locals) and there was this adorable little old lady refilling an ice cooler by her mailbox.  She had a sign on it that said something to the effect of Ice and Water for Cyclists.  When we stopped to talk to her she explained how it is always so hot and she feels bad for the cyclists so she put the cooler out for us.  She didn't understand why people were leaving money under the cooler since it is free.   I think I need to bake Ms Betty an apple pie this weekend. There are some amazing people in the world for sure. When you're done baking Ms. Betty an apple pie, will you bake me one??

On the when-to-put-on-the-socks thing... I've read that sleeves are easier to put on than socks and people like to put them on in T2.

tahrens - 2010-09-07 10:00 AM Question about compression. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

my old coach does. doesn't have issue's with stripper's.  he went 4:23 at longhorn 70.3 last year.

feel free to drop him a message about it if you'd like.  eric   he's currently andy's coach.

I guess it depends on the race length, putting socks on in an IM and HIM probably not going to do much to your overall time.

I have both sleeves and socks and they are tight so take a bit longer to put on, I tried running in the sleeves and hated it, felt strange.

John does he wear socks or sleeves?  I have seen plenty wear the sleeves on the swim but I would think the socks would be pretty gross after runnng out of the water with them on and putting them in your shoes.
