With the unseasonably warm weather I went for a bike ride yesterday. Everything was perfect except for one thing...(wait for it)... I forgot my riding shoes! Yes another shoe issue! Anyway we went out with me riding my clipless pedals with running shoes. My coach kept changing the route and the 24 miles became 38.7! I did not get dropped and I took my pulls too.

Did start to get cramps in my toes of my left foot near the end. Major quad workout.

And FWIW: All but two pens were shipped out by USPS this afternoon.

Doug: I pm'd you my address.  Your story reminded me of a guy I met at my second Oly distance race.  He was a friend of a guy I sometimes train/race with.  The guy had a $3000 Pinarello that he had ridden 3 or 4 times max before this Oly distance race (and yes, that was the only bike training he had done).  He had clipless pedals and no bike shoes.   He did the race in his running shoes.   Turns out he was a really good swimmer and had at least 5 minutes on me coming out of the water, but I quickly caught and passed him on the bike.

Oooohh.......  Doug I think you just got called out to a challenge..

I hope you get it!  I'd like some in the morning as well; but will be happy with anything that isn't cold rain.

Need some advice.

I have a race coming up on Dec 17.  It's a 3-person relay with each of us running 10 miles (on trails).  I've been gradually adding mileage and I accomplished a 10 mile trail run on Nov. 20th.

I'm having some ongoing (like since I started running last spring Undecided) issues with my right leg (Tight IT band, sore spot deep in the hamstring, tenderness below the knee on the lateral side--even some achilles discomfort at times.  ALL on the right side!).  I've only run once (30 min on the treadmill) in the last 8 days, but it's still bothering me.  Should I tell my right leg to toughen the "f" up and keep training for this race, or should I back off and try to give it more time to heal?  I feel like I need to be consistently running.

P.S. new insurance plan kicks in the first of the year, so I'm going to work through this on my own until then.

Throw down your $.02 please.

It sounds to me like ITB pain, I'm a long term sufferer and your description is very familiar.

I had my last big bout a few years ago when I almost collapsed at the end of a 16km run (having run the same 16km run only 2 days before...). I couldn't run for 3 months after that and I'd got popliteus tendonitis and hamstring tendonitis as well as ITBS.

My problem turned out to be leg length discrepancy and severe overpronation and an insole in my right shoe and motion control shoes fixed it - as well as foam rolling+++.

My advice is to cut back on mileage, introduce regular walk-breaks and ice the area after every run. I would also see a sports podiatrist even if you have to pay rather than wait for the new insurance.Good luck, make sure this injury doesn't develop into something worse!

Hi Jayne. I'm late to the party but I have had similar issues in the past in my left leg.. Check out your psoas and sartorius. If you have a good chiropractor he should be able to assist you with this. Mine was great.  Here's a great IT band stretch with a partner.  Lie on your back left leg bent to about 90 degrees, right leg straight up in the air. Have partner hold down your right hip so it doesn't move and push your right leg across your body gently.  keep your right knee straight.

You boys make it really hard to catch up on BT posts at work   Great job to all our turkey holiday racers.  I'm looking forward to reading all the race reports.

I second all the advise about the right leg/knee pain.  I tried to HTFU on a similar issue with very unhappy consequences.  Find the root cause please!!!

As I was planning my race schedule for next year I asked my coach if I should end the season with the Augusta HIM or a marathon.  His answer......... Let's do both!!!!!  Typical!     So much for taking it easy next year.    Any IMFL peeps interested in racing Augusta?

Doug, I'm registering for all the FS series open water swims.  I'll even do the Big Deuce with you if you want.  Better see your butt out there

I already wrote the OWS's in my calander. The Uno?deuce looks good since I really do not want to do Buckhorn again, and with the date change it is the next day. A lot of them fall near some of the sprints I like to do. We'll see.

So I brought my bike in for its winter overhaul. Looks like I may be in the market for a new saddle. I have no issues with a racing saddle, but thought I might try out one of the Cobbs. Now would be the time if I do. Any suggestions with regard to Cobb saddles?

Good recommendations with regard to the leg pains. I would also recommend using the legs-up-the-wall pose after running to help your recovery.

Been a very long time since I did a bike LT... now that I got the trainer set up this would be an excellent opportunity.

Controlled environment.... no traffic, no hills, no wind... sounds perfect right?
Downside - Since August, I have maybe three rides... so I'm thinking of waiting a few months to get my bike legs back... Maybe mid January?

Thoughts from the MG...

Brent, I would do it now

this way, you can repeat in a few months and see improvements

After IM, I think I was off the bike for about 6 weeks and did the dreaded test (somewhat against my will) the first week back...while depressing to see how much bike fitness dropped, after about 3 weeks of interval stuff, I could say with confidence, when I test again, I will be stronger.

So, not only for motivational purposes, which the test surely gave me some, but it is also great from a mental standpoint...and there are good fitness gains that go along with doing an LT test...

Good luck with the pain cave!

Brent..I forgot to add but did not want to mess up my beautiful formatting, that it gives you the proper zones to be training in for now, not whatever your zones were end of last season. Ok, off to work!

Since Tracy brought up the topic of race planning for 2012, I am wondering what others' approach is to planning their schedule.  Do you tend to choose races that you want to do without much regard to your A race or do you let your A race dictate your schedule and find preporatory races to that fit in best?

I'm having a hard time deciding b/w registering for races that fit in best with Fink's plan or signing up for races I want to do.  Either I do an early May sprint and mid-June HIM (both local and I want to do) meaning I start my training in mid Jan or I do a mid June Oly and early July HIM (both further away and the HIM doesnt have fab reviews) neither of which I'm excited about but my training would start mid Feb.  I'm leaning towards doing the races I want to but worried about greater chance of burnout and the 2 month gap with no races. Thoughts?

Personally planning a schedule depends a lot on the goals for the year.  For example this past year the IM was obviously my A race so everything else was solely designed in preparation for that race.  Where as this year my overall goal is strength and speed so I picked races I wanted to do that would test progress on those goals.   But ultimately I'd pick the races you are excited to do.  Without enthusiasm you'll burn out regardless from lack of motivation.  And for your first early May sprint having training start in January that is still lots of time before you have to get SBR heavy.  Take this early season time to increase your overall fitness with a variety of cross training.  Then come February/March you'll have a solid base to start tri-specific training.

My A race is IMFL. I am planning my schedule as preparation to that. I want a md-season half and wiull probably use a new race here in NC which is more like a 3/4. (2 mile swim, 88 mile bike, 10 mile run).  I have about 5 sprints and one olympic spread out through the year that I like to do. The Olympic will be the first time I have done that race as it is one of the first of the year here. I am planning on doing the local OWS series here as I found it to be a good gauge of where my swimming is at. Any plan can be juggled a little to accommodate a race or two.

One of the advantages of uses a coach is that we adapt the schedule accordingly and he tells me when a race is not a good idea.
