Oh yeah, I am also listening to the 2 pregnant ladies in my department discussing breast feeding, baby names, etc. I may use the letter opener to gouge out my ears.

You win.  I have the office to myself

I now have Pandora on and earbuds in. I am almost ready to detach from the network and wander somewhere else in the building.

You should get Spotify.

I'm going to start to make weekly running playlists

DS1 gave me access to his spotify but I haven't taken time to figure it out

Looks like it's gonna be LEED too. I may even touch the project depending on when they let me leave

Way cool! Most importantly, when is it scheduled to open?

soon Smile

You should come for the grand opening. You'd love Santa Fe

I'll be curious to see which region that I will be supporting (I will be supporting all of them, but will more than likely be designated to one where I will travel to) all of my international experience points to that but who knows, maybe they will change things up and I'll be supporting the ol' SW US of A!

lol just get your own. It's not complex at all. You can use the radio portion just like Pandora or you can create your own playlists on your desktop. You have to pay to access them mobily though, which I do.

Was sitting at home irritated at the thought of cleaning up kids' messes...decided to hook up the bike trailer and ride to Starbucks instead. It's kinda suposed to be 108° hot today, so I was dripping sweat a mile after leaving home. Feeling ready to tackle messes and headed home now :D

That's tough to bear. I routinely get to hear about the exploits of a coworker's son who -at least in her stories- is the funniest, most clever ladies 20 year old that ever lived. I've met him,; she's got mom blinders . She also tells anyone who will listen - even on first meetings with them, when she lost her virginity and everything she has ever done in her entire life. That said, she's actually a nice woman who will do anything for anyone- you just have to put up with all her other crap and nonsense.

Trust me, I give her hell for such over sharing, but she doesn't care. You should see the look on the guys' faces who think theyre just having a nice comversation and then get blind sided by all this!

Ahh, much better, I left and closed myself off in an empty office. Much Better.

Salty, I run with an MP3 player, so what other benefits does Spotify have over Pandora? Just playlists? Which isn't a bad deal, and Pandora can get to be a bit much. Sometimes it gets through half a song and then just switches to the next one. If it was anything other than background music, I might be bummed. I may try the iHeart Radio app, my wife likes that one.

Yeah, you can create playlists with the music YOU choose. And if you pay for it, it's accessible mobily. If you don't pay for it, it's still accessible on your desktop.

You can also share playlists with each other freely.

Pandora is just using the music genome project and spitting out music based on that for your radio station. Spotify has that as well (Spotify radio) and that is accessible mobility for free as well.

*And to clarify, the playlists you create are with music on Spotify, IE music you don't own. Which means you have access to nearly anything you could possibly want (minus some obscure stuff) for free (or as I said, you pay like 8 bucks a month if you want it mobily) Honestly, I don't have any need to buy music ever again.

OK, thanks. I like a bunch of different stuff, so them picking songs for me is kinda nice, I get stuff I wouldn't find otherwise. But I can see value from Spotify, I may give it a shot this weekend.

THey do that too, as I said, with Radio and with their Discover tool which uses the genome project to pick new bands and new songs based on what you have been listening to. And of course, when using the radio function like Pandora, you can star a song you like and add it to a playlist.

No - I have a standard crank (39, 53) and an 11 - 23 casette. (11 - 17 + 19, 21, 23).

Couple questions:

  1. What is the largest front crank I can go to?
  2. Smallest rear?  (I really want a bigger front crank for those screaming descents, but don't want to screw up my paces on the flats.  At the same time - I feel I will develop into a faster rider on the flats if I start working with a larger chain ring on the front).
  3. What would you recommend for routes with a lot tougher climbing? Here's a link to one of my routes around here. 56 miles  This is a pretty common amount of climbing for me - no matter what loop I do around here.  I handle these hills fine with my current setup (I didn't used to be able to say that).  This climb - almost killed me.  It is short - but there are segments between 10% and 15%.  It hurt - and my cadence dropped into the low 60's for this Beast.

I'm sure it's in there - but just for good measure...

It's the gap between the big and small ring that is likely to limit you, at 16T. So with a 39 small, that would be a 55 big ring. That would take you from 52 mph to 53.9. You're not actually going to feel that difference. I'd rather keep it lower so that I wasn't shifting between the two rings so much. Thinking you can get more out of learning to spin better for going really fast.  I know you spin high on normal pacing (at or just over 100?), but how much higher can you go (in control)? I can usually go something like 140 to a bit over 150 (I run out of hill before going higher), and have gone over 190 before. I know it sounds fun, but you'd really be sacrificing some in a more usable range. And I know the feeling, but there is no reason a bigger ring would make you faster on the flats.

Don't go smaller than 11 for the rear cog. There are 10's available, but not all derailleurs can handle them and with their small size they get less efficient. Enough that it can become noticeable.

With hills like that around, I'd be looking at another gear or two. I normally use an 11-23 in back because there isn't anything really substantial in the near area. I have an 11-28 that I'll switch in for the big rides I post. Those I have to drive to.

First - thanks for taking the time to help me.  I'm just starting to understand the gearing much better - but I'm confused on a couple of things you pointed out.

140 - 150+ rpm?  Are you serious?  That sounds SUPER high.  Doesn't your heart rate spike?  My cardio is VERY good - and I'm able to keep my heart rate in the 130 - 140 range for most rides by keeping in the 95 - 105 cadence range.  If I spike my heart rate by pedaling up to 150 rpms - isn't that going to burn a ton more energy hence tiring me sooner?

As for bigger up front equating to more speed on the flats - what I meant was, one of my favorite gears is Big 3 (my name for big chain ring - 3rd gear on rear).  Since I'm running 53 now - if I jump to a 55 for my big ring - and stay in the 3rd gear on the back (19T) - and build to where I can comfortably keep a cadence of around 100 - wouldn't 100 rpm on a 55, 19 setup = faster than 100 rpm on a 53, 19?

That's my though logic anyways...
