Serious Swim Question ahead:

How do you people keep track of the number of intervals when you have a load of them to do (e.g. 12x100)?  On the TM last year I used to throw dog treats on the floor as I finished one, but can't bring them to the pool because they dissolve!  Marbles seem dangerous....there must be something out there for us challenged counters.

Pennies....  Seriously though, I think my watch indicates which set I am on....

I'm pretty basic here.  For time I use the pace clock at the pool.  For counting I put my pull buoy on the rt of my kick board.  Then after each swim I switch sides.  Between knowing my swim times and which side of the kick board my pull buoy is on I really don't lose track of the swims.  However, if I'm not watching the clock (ie warm-up) I do tend to lose track of laps.  If that happens I'll just start with the last lap I remember.  I know I swim longer than planned, but it really doens't hurt to go longer.

Speaking of technology - does everyone train with a HRM?

Not in the pool...

Pool Tech - Swimmovate watch - love it!  Tracks laps, time, sets, easy to tell rest intervals stroke count per lap, etc  easy to use, just push one button at the end of each set and the same button to start the next one.

Run - Garmin 305 with HRM - coupled with McMillian running calculator it has been invaluable for me for pacing and learning RPE's

Bike - Garmin 305 with HRM and Speed/Cadence - power would probably be better, but I can't justify the bucks.  When I am on my CT, I can get power and train with power there  - if I pay attention, I can relate my HR/RPE to power output for the outdoor rides..

I know some of you have heard about the death of Chirs Gleason at the Philapelphia Maraathon a couple of weeks ago. He was only 40, a husband and father of two. He was also a dedicated triathlete and his loss has hit a lot of people hard on Slowtwitch.

They are renaming one of his favorite racces after him, and I am stoked to be making a HUGE trophy that will bear his likeness. It will be very over the top with a drinking tankard at the top, and other cool details. Luckily I have until May!

For counting sets, I use the pace clock. Helps not to do things on a 1:00-based interval (i.e. do your 50's on :55 or 1:05, for example), but you can always use the clock to figure out how many 100's/50's whatever you've done.

I use an HRM, but mostly I just look at the data after I am done and give it a "huh" shrug. I like to see if I went faster or slower with higher HRs but I don't obsess over it at all DURING runs. I use it on the bike too, but with the CT I use the watts and the HR is mostly, again, just interesting. I found last year my HR was where Coggen & Allen said it would be during intervals, so then I knew outside when I was in the ballpark of efforts. And I did use it during IM to keep me in check on the bike, although I know I am a lazy cyclist so probably using HR isn't the best of ideas because I'm likely not to push too hard anyway, ha ha. Slacker, here.

Doug -- very cool about the trophy. I have thought a lot about Gleason and his family -- it is just sooooo sad.

GO RACERS!!!

I have a very good deal for someone with a little girl. I have a lemon lime pair of Kinvara's size 6 with some awesome blue xtendz laces that have a whopping 13m on them.  PT took one look at them and asked me not to wear them anymore based on my past SFX history. You pay shipping and they're yours.  They don't even need to wear them for running.  They are so HOT looking.

Good luck to all the racers this weekend! Tony, Sam, John, Julia, and DJ (hope I didn't miss anyone) have fun and enjoy!!!

Thanks so much for all the well wishes and kind words! You all are awesome! We're in San Francisco and the weather is BEAUTIFUL! Picked up our packets and dropped off our drop-bags.  Gary's bib number is 405 and mine is 406. Sportstats is doing live tracking and I signed up to have it posted to my facebook, so if anyone's bored tomorrow you can track me. Don't worry if I'm slow, as long as I'm under 16 mm I'm OK, if I go over that I am in danger of missing the cut-offs. Hopefully, I'll have a little cushion. We'll see what the day brings...

To answer questions:

I use my Ironman Timex watch, and I also push the lap buttons under water...probably because I'm 5' and the pool depth is 4'. You do the math. It'll look strange to "lift" my arms above water to press a button.  Didn't have issues, but it does not feel as easy to press the lap button anymore.

Suzy, to keep track of the number of laps, I say the number over and over, or I break it down to 4 laps per 100.  So for 12 x 100. I would say, "1 lap, 2 lap, 3 lap, 100! 1 lap 2 lap 3 lap 200!", etc.  However, the pennies thing sounds like a good idea I may do that too.

I haven't used the indoor speed sensor - I usually see mph on the CT screen.  i will try the indoor setting to see if it matches with the CT...  BTW, I think I am set to Auto...

I train with a Power Tap with the JOULE and also use the CT.  The two never match up when it comes to MPH...the PT is always faster.  There is about a 2-3 Watt difference between the two as well.

My Kinvaras have been spoken for!!  Glad to see someone will get use out of them and look cool.

BTW, I swim with an old Timex watch. (I'm a little bit of a Timex watch hoarder and have 3 or 4 of 'em -- I LOVE them!!) I always push the lap button under water when I'm doing longer distances and want split times. I don't do it for sets, as I just use the pace clock on the wall. I've never had water proof problems with my Timexes, but I do make sure they are resistant to the deepest depths. I never use them for diving -- we go way too deep to expect regular watches to play nicely. Besides, I have a fun dive computer that tracks all of my geeky dive data!!

Last winter I used my 305 indoors on the trainer.  I just turned off GPS (otherwise you're going nowhere and maybe therefore, no speed?) and it worked fine.   I don't know whether the speed was "correct".  It was consistent, i.e., if I was in a specific gear at a specific cadence (90), the speed was the same from workout to workout.

This winter I'm using the Joule/powertap.  Maybe some day I'll try out the 305 together with the Joule to see how the  speeds compare.

Any word on Roni?  We haven't gotten any updates from FB yet.

Back from my race - what a disaster!  Drew was great and a really good sport.  Faked me out about how tired he was then sprinted up the last big hill to the finish.

I'm usually pretty forgiving of race organizers but WOW what a mess.  The 5k started 45min. late.   The start line was 1.5 miles from the parking with no prior warning about that at packet pickup.  Traffic was terrible for those trying to get to the race which was part of the hold up.  And my favorite part - the path used to get up to the race start was the first mile of the race.  HA HA unbelievable.  And this race had 20,000 runners.   And once we finally started, we came to a grinding stop or slow wall several times within the first 1.5 mile of the run.  Oh well - it was fun to be out w/ Drew and the chocolate was good although another .5m away from the finish.

I saw she started, but that was it.....Twin are you meeting her somewhere?
