I lost the connection through Universal Sports as Chrissy crossed the line, so I quickly switched to the Ironman feed (which I knew from earlier was about a minute behind) and was able to catch the CX finish.  So very awesome!

Suzy, if I find it playing again I'll post it here.  It was great.  She crossed and layed down on the line.  She was so happy and just crying that she couldn't even talk to the finish line announcer.  She set the new course record.

Her splits:
Wellington, Chrissie 54:31 2:15 4:52:07 2:05 3:03:06

So much emotion... my wife told me to pull it together.

Maybe I can get a picture with her tomorrow...  I found out she went to one of the same colleges as me...  Tooooo cooool....

Time to try to get some sleep - 3:30 will come early in the morning...

PS - thanks for inspires guys - have been really busy with family and work committments lately and not able to hang out and chat with my MG peeps....

Well that didnt work well...If 15F rightnow here. Light snow. Supposed to get up to low 60's later in week.
Its thanksgiving in Canada this weekend. So family is here, going to hit costco shortly, then watch some NFL and eat good food.
No running today. Took my wife out for her 1st ever 10 miles yesterday. I think she is going to attempt her 1st half marathon next month. I will probably ghost run it with her.

Suz....we need to move south don't we?

Not gonna happen from me today.  I ran in Jan of this year when it was 4 degree's F.  But for today's 10 k it's gonna be 42F.  Trying to decide on what to wear.  I plan to run hard, so shorts or leggings?  Long sleeves or arm warmers?  Too many choices.

Jeremy--42F? Shorts and a light long sleeve shirt!

Trevor--May I suggest you check out the Galveston area late April to see if that might be a better climate?

Yep.  Lots of amazing stories yesterday.  But there is something that's needs a bit of correction here. Its important to understand what Chrissie did crossing the line yesterday.  She did a log roll or what is now termed a Blazeman Roll, a symbol of the war on ALS.  Countless athletes have crossed finish lines all over the world doing it.  Some are famous like Matty Reed at Alcatraz and some not so famous.

The term is Blazeman Roll was coined at IMH 4 years ago when Jon Blais log rolled across the finish line.  He was the first person to complete IMH with ALS, more widely known Lou Gehrig's Disease.  Jon passed away in 2007 but clearly his spirit lives on.  You need to look no further than Steve's log to see this.  Incredibly we know about as much of this devastating disease as we did back when Gehrig was diagnosed and gave his famous speech.  1939.

That day Jon wore bib number 179.  Today in all North American Ironman races bib # 179 is reserved from some racing with a special cause.  As of now, this number is freely available to racers at non North American IM's, but good luck getting it.

If you are interested in more on Jon or the War on ALS check out his site here

Here is the clip from that race 2005.  I can't imagine having to tie your own grown child's shoes let alone watch your child disintegrate before your eyes.

Chrissie did not lay down yesterday.  She rolled... So others may live.

Anyone hear any news about Rudy Garcia...the double amputee?  Looking at the athlete tracker, it looks like he did not finish the bike.  I was pulling for him to finish.  These challenged athletes are really inspiring.

In Chrissie's interview after the race, she spoke of not just being remembered for putting up great times, or records, but being able to use her "celebrity" (not her words) to do something greater in the world and ALS is a special cause for her, as she has met Jon Blais' parents and has gotten involved in the foundation. My mom's best friend in the world died of ALS at age 55 and it was the hardest thing to watch as she declined physically, but mentally stayed sharp as a tack. It is a very special cause to me and we make a yearly contribution in hopes that we can do more now than she had then. If I am ever lucky (and tough) enough to get to Kona, I will do the Blazeman roll with pride.Btw, just got home from a 17 mile run. Whew, time to watch some FOOTBALL! go niners!

Well, I posted a RR: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=183650

To say that it did not go as planned is an understatement. I thought the swim wnet well, but seeing the results, I guess not so much. There is a lot of discussion of the course being long (1.17 mile in one measured case). I do not know if my inability to get a good night sleep played into things, but my back tightened up on the bike and I was slow (17.9 mph) which led to an even slower run. Had to walk parts. But hey I finished my first olympic.

I am a little disappointed, but glad this was not my first tri. I am happy the season is over. I will work on my fitness and especially my weight this off season.

Oh yeah, don't get cheap bottle cages broke mine coming out of T1 and lost my nutrition for the ride. D'oh! If I did not have bad races how would I recognize the good ones?

OK, so I got a bit warm at today's race.  More to come about the race but I'll say this now:

This was the poorest race course marking I've ever seen.  I went off track with the other race leaders (as I was in the top 4 from the start through mile 4).   We followed what we assumed was the course as it was marked 10 with an arrow.  Then later realized that those markings were from the 10 mile run earlier this year.

All in all, I ended up finishing first OA... but the 2 guys who were in front of me by about 30 - 40 yards made another wrong turn and went an extra block out of the way.  When I finished my FR read 6.29  So I still ran the distance and some... along with many other people who followed behind us.

Looked at the race results and it showed me finishing 2nd OA... First place finisher with a time 10+ minutes shorter than my finish.  Not possible as I was with the top finishers all the way until that last turn when the 2 made the last wrong turn.

Many of us were so frustrated.  I would have ended up 3rd OA.  I took my 2nd OA medal and walked.  I wasn't sure that I should have taken it.  I took my AG last year and knew I would be faster this year, and since I still put in the distance, I didn't feel too bad about taking a medal.

But the 2 turns that we missed were not marked on the pavement and once we asked a man at the aid station which way to go and he shrugged his shoulders.  Another set of volunteers pointed us in the completely wrong direction.

*So pissed*  RR to come later tonight.

Hey all, back from my first olympic...  I finished and that is about all I can say.  I am working on rr, but may fall asleep at any moment.

Doug, nothing went as planned for me today except the run so I know how you feel.  Last tri of the season for me as well, now on to running and swim lessons...  apparently I need them...

Jeremy--something similar happened to me last year in a duathlon.  I was leading, a volunteer turned me in the wrong direction and I ended up getting 2nd place.  Bummer, but you know how well you were doing.

Andy--congrats on finishing the race!  at least now you know what you are going to do in your off season....

Great job racers!

Doug and Andy - congrats on your first Olys.  It's a big step forward.  Don't sweat the missteps - you'll learn from them and be even better next year.

Jeremy - I can't say that I can relate to leading a race and getting lost.  I usually have plenty of people to follow around.  ;-)  But I'm sure that was very frustrating.  Good job anyways!

Funny Sam, when I was reading Jeremy's race issue I was thinking the same thing. I always have tonnes of people in front of me. Never have to worry about going off course.
Thats tough though Jeremy. You'd think a race would be better organized than that.

Suzy- I know..I know.

SSMinnow - 2009-10-09 10:10 PM Breastroke, who does it?  I learned the fundamentals tonight.  I can see where it would be useful, but good lord, arms and legs are going everywhere!  Also learned back....seems a lot simpler, but a lot less useful in OWS.

Also finalized my remaining '09 and '10 race calendar....no racing for me until mid November to rehab to leg.  Then it is full steam ahead!

Make it a good weekend...

I have read some questions here and on ST about learning other strokes.  Good to relieve the boredom of swimming laps, plus good for working other muscles.

Just saw this post and I figured I would throw my two cents in.  I will check out the rest tomorrow since I am about five pages behind.

I love swimming different strokes.  I swim most of them to ease bordom and work different muscles.  My last swim workout, I actually threw in about 150 fly.  I swam many years ago in high school and had the school record for 100 breast.
