Pre-race routine:

Ate a banana, a slice of Peanutbutter on wheat and a gatorade. had a diet pepsi vanilla on the way to start. Firsttime I have had the family with me.
Event warmup:

Swam 50 yds.
Swim
  • 35m 36s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 10s / 100 yards
Comments:

This is going to be a Clint Eastwood report: The Fair, the BAd and the Ugly! Spent most of the time counting strokes. Caught some people from the 2 preceeding waves. A lot of talk that the course was long, as long as 1.17 miles. Amazed my swim was as slow as this.
What would you do differently?:

Work on stroke technique
Transition 1
  • 02m 54s
Comments:

Sucked! First the hill up out of the water was hard on me. I had trouble getting one heel out of my suit, and to cap that off I broke my rear water bottle holder, losing both of my rear bottles trying to get on the bike. Did not know I had lost both (thought it was only 1 gone) bottles until mile 20. My wife said a woman tried to hand me one of the bottles. Glad I missed her as I would have been DQ'ed.
What would you do differently?:

Get a better set of cages. practice more wetsuit removal.
Bike
  • 1h 40m 35s
  • 30 miles
  • 17.90 mile/hr
Comments:

Get more sleep. I had no more than 3 hours continuous sleep for the previous 3 days. Otherwise I am at a loss.
Transition 2
  • 01m 34s
Comments:

OK. Got in and out fairly well.
Run
  • 1h 13m 9s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 11m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

Knew within 1/2 mile the bad experience on the bike was going to carry over. Walked a good portion of the route. Nuff said!
What would you do differently?:

Ride a scooter.

I'm so sorry the race didn't go well.  Count this as a learning experience, remember key points that happened and move on.  You know everyone has good and bad races.....this one will make the next one oh so sweet.    Take it easy on yourself!!!  You trained hard, but it just wasn't your day.  You have done VERY well in your first year of tris!

Now, get ready for the ATT run.

Wow, lucky you.... your bad race is behind you and only good things are to come....seriously Doug, we all have an off day. Welcome to the club.

Next time, sleep a little more, cut the legs of your wetsuit shorter, have back up nutrition and you will be good to go!

Way to tough it out!  There are just those sort of days sometimes...  The first race in stepping up distance has to be the hardest -right???

just saw the 'ride a scooter' comment bwawahahahhaa...

This was definitely a race where you needed your ducks in a row to get it done right. Way to pull it off despite your incidents.

yea , i think mile 4 or 5 the water girls asked "heed or water" i  asked her for a ride to the finish... the run was tricky.

nice work!

That was a tough course, especially for a first olympic.  Think of all the great training you did and how much your learned. Next year you'll crush it!  You should be proud to say your raced Pinehurst this year, no matter what.

Way to tough it out Doug.  A friend of mine did that race and he was telling me how hard it was compared to other Olympics he had done.  It's tough to perform your best on lack of rest, but you went out there with you had that day and gave it your best.  Nice job.

Ok I dont feel so bad, the swim course was 1.17 miles, via HumanVelocity, wearing a GPS under his cap.  I dont kow if I will do this one next year, frankly I liked the course but not having lights coming from parking was a problem, what if i had brought my family.  These events need to become more famly friendly.i

Since I have signed up for Augusta 1/2 next year I doubt I will do this one ether next year. I did bring the family and the prickers in the parking area were a problem as well. Part of me does want another crack at the course though.
