This is my first tri as well and I am getting a little nervous too. The bike is the part that makes me nervous. I have not gotten out on the road nearly as much as i wanted to. i have done trainer rides but i just don't think they are enough.

Oh well, i just have to suck it up and see what happens.

sdanaher - 2010-03-18 11:44 AM Excited for smithfield.  Did the course last weekend.  Hopefully they clean up the transition area - it was a SWAMP and there was also some mud/standing water on warrens mill rd - but I think that will be gone (the water at least).

Hoping for the best for the pool swim and people's honesty.  Last year in the first 25 people there was on guy out there doing breaststroke - sorry bud, you probably aren't swimming the 1:05/100 that you said you can with b-stroke.  

I put 1:27 down this year and expect to swim that, but not if I have to climb over 2:00/100 people that said they could do 1:25s

i saw that, but 40% is not high enough chance for me to worry and it's still way to far out to rely on the forecast anyway.

mdfahy - 2010-03-22 10:10 AM I biked and ran the course this weekend.  The hairpin turn on the bike course comes at about mile 4 and it is at the bottom of a hill, so you can't see it coming and since I was going downhill I was in a large gear...mistake!  I know others have warned about this, but I still didn't anticipate that the turn was right at the bottom of the hill and I had it in a big gear, so it took me forever to get the right gear, turn and get up the hill.  Good lesson for this weekend.  There is also the biggest hill at the very end to note.

mdfahy - 2010-03-22 11:20 AM That's correct, I'm a newbie so any hill seems big to me!  My garmin said the route has a total climb of 245 ft on the bike course and 435 ft on the run course.  Not sure how accurate that is, but that is what it reported.

For the swim, do you wear a swim cap? or is that just for open water swims?  is there a benefit to wearing one?

Still undecided.  Pretty sore right now.  That should all be gone soon, in time for the weekend.  We'll see... $80 before Wednesday, $85 after.
