Don't plan on seeing hills in Smithfield... there are none. It's flat and fast.

it actually is slightly uphill the first mile and a half out. there is a downhill slope after the first turn that runs approx a mile with a sharp turn uphill with short climb, otherwise its flat, but not all flat like buckroe beach will be.  i hope to do it this year.  i drove the course last year, but missed it due to family conflict. i haven't been in the pool in 2-1/2 months.  i hope the temp is over 50 degrees by then. pretty scenic area, i use to ride my motorcycle thru the area several years back.  this will be the longest race i do other than buckroe, the rest i plan to do with triitnow events.

I was curious what the pool swim was like?  This will be my first tri and I am wondering if the swim is crowded or is it under control?  Do they swim just one direction in the pool or both?  How is passing someone or being passed like?  Would appreciate any input from those that did this race last year.

It is a time trial start so you want to enter your 100m time at a pace you can maintain for 300m. you will start about every 10-15 seconds it is a serpentine swim one full lap in each of the six lanes. Passing is usually pretty respectfull , most people will touch your foot to let you know they are there. you can slow to the side let them pass or stop at the wall and let them pass . it is all about courtesy in the pool swims.. best thing you can do is enter the most accurate seed time you can and you wont have to much passing to worry about... Just have Fun

This is my first time doing a triathlon, too. If you look at the maps for the race, you can see what the course will be like when you click on "Course Maps".http://www.setupevents.com/?fuseaction=event_detail&eventID=1378

It is a fun race.

Really simple, good tune-up and good atmosphere.

Anyone potentially want to ride the course a couple times one of these weekends?

Does anyone know where the transition area is in relationship to the pool and start lines? What the surface is like?

How do you enter/exit the pool? Are you allowed to run in the pool area to transition?

Transition is outside the YMCA. They are really great about letting everyone wait inside till your swim time.  Then you run out of the pool area right inside the transition. This is a great first timers race. Sure hope that the weather gets a bit warmer.  Two years ago I vol and had to wear my heavy winter coat.

I'm in for this race.  I watched the event last year and immediatly caught the tri bug.  Looking forward to participating this year.  I won't be much of a competitor, as most of my winter has been rehabbing a bad leg from Richmond Marathon last November.

I bike the course pretty regularly.  As someone mentioned, the first mile or so is a slight incline.  Nothing like what you'd find in most other parts of the state, but for this area, it is noticable.  There is one kind of tricky hairpin turn on the course.  A nice down-hill run followed by a sharp 270 degree uphill turn.

Also, be prepared for some traffic on the roads.

If anyone is going to be riding the course over the next few weeks, shoot me a pm...I'd love the company.

When signing up for this event, i'm not sure to enter as novice or age group.  Do all novice entries regardless of age compete, or is it novice in that particular age group.
