Expert 721 | Subject: RE: Where were you one year ago? A year ago I was working 70-80 hours a week, not getting enough sleep, not seeing my family enough, and dreaming about the day when I'd have enough time to fit in a workout. Today, I'm working 70-80 hours a week, not getting enough sleep, not seeing my family enough, and dreaming about the day when I'll have enough time to fit more workouts . The differences are: 1. I'm less than ONE YEAR from finishing residency and having my life back (at least to some extent) 2. I'm actually making a little time to work out this summer-it's spotty at best but better than nothing. 3. I am a few pounds lighter now-a small accomplishment, but given the abdominal fat inducing call-night cortisol, I'll take it. It's very motivating to hear the stories from all of you who have made such incredible strides this year! |

Master 2571 Tiger's Den | Subject: RE: Where were you one year ago? A year ago I was giving myself 4 injections a day to get ready for our 2nd IVF attempt. I was also 41 lbs heavier than I am now and did zero exercise. 2nd one didn't work. Gave up the idea of a biological child, moved to adoption. The stress of infertility was suddenly lifted and I decided to take control of my body again. Started WW in September, started running again in January. Ran a marathon in June, started tri training just after. Will have my first tri on my 34th birthday on 8-20. Signed up for a duathlon on 10-28 after that. Will probably do a half mary sometime in January before starting back up for the next tri season. Oh, and I've lost 41 lbs. Still have about 26 to go... What a difference a year makes! |

Expert 919 | Subject: RE: Where were you one year ago? June of 2005 started training for my first tri. Was 205 lbs at the time and had 36 in waist. Currently I fluctuate between 160-165, have 30 in waist, lower bp, low cholesterol. Finished a total of 3 sprints, 3 olympics and have two HIM scheduled for this year. Just did a sprint this last weekend and place 18/300 and 2/24 in age group (would have been first if I didnt go an extra 2.2 miles on the bike thanks to a wrong turn, lost 6 minutes due to this) |

Veteran 216 Auckland | Subject: RE: Where were you one year ago? A year ago I was struggling to run 100m around the fields and training for a first 1-km run. Since then I have learnt (and still learning) to swim, done several mini-sprints, sprint tri's, a Xterra off-road tri and just ran a 15km off-road race. The new road bike turned up yesterday and HIM training starts in two weeks. So it's fair to say like many others here I have come a long way in the last 12 months. |

Expert 938 Haddam, CT | Subject: RE: Where were you one year ago? Last year at this time, I was preparing for my very first triathlon, the Danskin Sprint in Mass. I was so nervous and though I felt only mildly prepared, I felt tremendously supported by my newly-found Beginner Triathlete friends. I had a really, really old bike, and ran a bit slower than I do now. I had a lot less confidence about myself and my abilities. My next race is will be my second International length. Boy, it has been a great year! This thread is a great reminder of my accomplishments, and comes at a time when I need a motivation boost. How karmic. |

Subject: RE: Where were you one year ago? A year ago I was returning to swimming after a 20+-year absence, joining the local tri-club to take the Ocean 101 clinic (i.e., "don't be afraid of waves"), looking for a small-size road bike to replace my old 45-lb hybrid, and wheezing through a half-mile run, still saying that "maybe someday I can do a triathlon." Today I did 4 "speed circuits" sans wetsuit in the Pacific and am heading out for track intervals this afternoon in prep for my first Olympic. Who'd have thought (other than me)? |

Dropped 30 sec on my 100 yd swim times Dropped 3 min on my race pace Added 5 mph to my average TT times In the next year I am looking for.. another 15 seconds on the swim another 2 minutes on the run pace and add another 5 mph to the bike All that would be good but more importantly I want to enjoy the next year even more than the last |

Regular 58 | Subject: RE: Where were you one year ago? Last year I went to the gym so I wasn't out of shape. In May I decided that I'm going to start with triathlon training. I planned to join a club, but first I wanted to get in a better shape so I started with marathon training. That was a mistake because I was doing to much to soon, so I ended up injured and had to cancel marathon. This year I've done 3 sprint triathlons, 1 olimpic distance and 1 sprint duathlon. My 4. zone pace back then was over 5 min/km, and now I run easy runs on that pace. I could hardly swim faster than 2 min/100m, and now I can swim 1500 m in 25 min (pace 1:40 min/km). Last year I haven't biked at all and since March this year I've biked around 3000 km. I've done my first Olimpic distance tri in 2:07 h. Since winter my running was reduced to minimum because of the injuries, but I'm constantly improving. Who knows where can I be this time next year, I just hope I don't get injured again. |

46 | Subject: RE: Where were you one year ago? a year ago; lacking a goal couldn't swim more than 12 metres freestyle never swam in open water curiously peeking at my first tri as a spectator frightening the living daylights out of myself by telling people 'I want to do a tri!' couldn't ride a bike let alone own one. now; learnt to swim freestyle got me a Trek and 'love' pushing myself on the bike got me a turbo trainer (if you're British you will understand) done my first tri (very first time in open water, won my age group) training for my next Tri (September, fingers crossed) joined a Tri club and found BT (just the best site ever!) met and spoke to some fabulous people and I am TOTALLY hooked! interesting and bumpy journey, but I've loved it. On reflection I think I've improved a little in a year and I am pleased when I look back and see how far I've come. Iv'e loved reading other people's journeys and feeling pride for them in their progress. WELL DONE! Edited by Toska 2006-07-27 6:17 AM |

I finished but not in good shape, my training was all wrong. About 360 days ago I broke my toe. Sept I started to get back on track. In April I finished a half in fine form and then in May a full. Here’s my before and after from my winter training. http://ricemantoironman.blogspot.com/2006/05/before-and-after-05-06... The marathon goals will be over after I finish Boston in less than 3 hours next spring, and tri-training starts this fall. Next summer, one year from now I will be doing as many tri’s as I have time for. Cheers. Rice. |

Expert 1157 Tremonton, Utah | Subject: RE: Where were you one year ago? I wasn't EVEN close to being a triathlete! This time last year I was "training" for marathon number 6, and managed to injure my ankle which put a quick stop to that race. I loved Marathon, but was extremely slow for the number I had done. (Typically in the top 60-65%) Self image as an athlete was non-existant. Started Triathlon Training September 30th, 2005 (1 day before I should have been running a marathon) and was way overweight! Basic Statistics: 210 lbs, couldn't swim more than 50 yards without stopping to rest, an EXCELLENT run was in the 9:00/mile range over 5k, and I hadn't ridden my bike in at least 2 years! Fast forward to today, Weight: 180, Swim-2:10/100 yds over 1600 yards non-stop, 5k pace is 7:20/miles, Bike is about 20 mph/20 miles, have completed 7 sprint distance triathlons, taking 1st place is AG once, and consistently placing in the top 25% overall. Next Saturday I'll run my very first Olympic Distance triathlon. Most importantly, my self image as an athlete is real. For the first time in my 46 years, I call myself an athlete! That's probably the biggest thing for me -- I am an Athlete, and I am a TRIATHLETE! BT has been an INTEGRAL part of my progress as a triathlete! Couldn't have done it without BT. Have made some wonderful friends here who constantly encourage and motivate! Thanks everyone -- and JUST KEEP TRI ing! |

I was also nervously and anxiously building towards my first full sprint in August '05 with an open water swim. Last week I completed my first half ironman distance triathlon. In between, I've also done my first: 10k running race, 1/2 marathon, and olympic distance tri. Edited by Micawber 2006-07-30 11:59 AM |
