Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Not too much new to add but: In the USA, I've only been to Point Roberts, Washington state. I have a list of other places I'd like to visit in the US. Most Canadian provinces including Labrador and Newfoundland. Mexico Thailand Cambodia Malaysia Bali and Lombok I am currently planning a trip for this winter to return to Thailand & Malaysia plus adding time in Singapore and the Phillipines.

I think that's it. I've been on some day layovers elsewheres, but not counting those. |

Just madness, I think if you would have gotten away from all the sailors on leave things probably would have been better. Anyways, my list is always expanding but here goes nothing. USA, Canada, Mexico, England, Scotland, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Iceland, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Djibouti, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Guam, Bahamas and Cayman Islands. I reeeeeaaaalllly need to get back on expanding this list. School is cramping my style! Wow, only two of us have been to Russia. Not exactly a exotic travel destination. I went to Moscow in 78. I was 10, but I remember it well. It was a very strange place. We were there for a couple of days. Went to Red Square, saw the Kremlin.... but no pictures allowed. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm not sure I can list them all: Canada Mexico Bermuda* Turks and Caicos* St.Maarten/St.Martin Bahamas Curacao Aruba Jamaica England Spain France Germany Italy Malta Greece Egypt Israel Turkey* Oman* Saudi Arabia* Kuwait* Qatar* Bahrain UAE Yemen* South Korea Japan Vatican City In fairness, the starred places are places I flew missions into but never left the airport. One can get a sense of a culture by operating an airplane somewhere, but it's not the same as a true visit. I feel like I traveled more than this, but I guess it's correct. I have a lot of repeats to places like Italy, Spain, Bahrain, etc. I also spent large chunks of time living on the economy so to speak in places like Italy, Greece, Curacao, and Bahrain which is a different travel experience than a few days at a resort...you end up having to do things like grocery shop and deal with local government bureaucracies. You also start making friends with the locals and strike out to parts unknown after you become bored with the touristy stuff...that's when you really start to get an idea of what it's like in a place. Unlike Tuwood, I liked most of them a LOT. Except for the toilets. The United States has, by far, the most impressive potty technology in the whole world. And after you've been without it, you start to realize how important that is to QOL. Super interesting thread. I also spent a ton of time in Puerto Rico and while technically it's not really it's own country, but it's closer to that than being part of the US. For whatever that's worth. I liked it there too. ETA: I need a ruling on St. Maarten/St. Martin. Does that count as visits to France and Netherlands or should it be considered it's own place. Or own two places. Weird place. Toilet technology and artistry: Japan. I've perched on the pot on a Plexiglas platform with goldfish swimming underneath. Fancy frilly goldfish. I tend to think of countries as separate entities if they compete under their own flag in the Olympics. Countrystatenation are such fascinating and debatable concepts. |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() TriAya - 2012-09-18 1:19 PM I tend to think of countries as separate entities if they compete under their own flag in the Olympics. Countrystatenation are such fascinating and debatable concepts. Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and England. Four countries, together they comprise the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (The UK) itself a country. Countries within a country. Some refer to the UK as a Sovereign state, and it is, but it is also properly known as a country. In some sports (soccer for example) the countries compete as individual nations, in the Olympics as one nation. I view the four countries as such, others view them as a single nation. anyway back to the thread..... |

I was 10, but I remember it well. It was a very strange place. We were there for a couple of days. Went to Red Square, saw the Kremlin.... but no pictures allowed. Honestly Russia was probably one of my least liked destinations. I was there in 2009 traveling through St. Petersburg, Moscow, took the TransSiberian to Irkutsk then through Ulan Ude to Ulaanbaatar. Until we got close to the Mongolia border the people just seemed very put off by everything, no smiles, very cold. Plus the food was nothing to write home about. It might also have something to do about having to bribe the police twice in order to not be arrested for drinking... I mean this is Russia we are talking about here, the place where beer isn't considered alcoholic because it isn't hard liquor. Edited by mn_av8or 2012-09-18 5:05 PM |

It might also have something to do about having to bribe the police twice in order to not be arrested for drinking... I mean this is Russia we are talking about here, the place where beer isn't considered alcoholic because it isn't hard liquor. It was bizzar to say the least. It was like everything was grey and dreary. (It's was overcast the whole time) A member of our tourist party strayed to take pictures of the Kremlin. A police officer blew his whistle and it was like a gigantic game of Simon Says.... the ENTIRE Red Square FROZE. Military guys came and scooped him up. They took his camera and later allowed him to rejoin us. Everyone got food poisoning including my Mom. We called a Doctor, but you could not pay him. You could give him gifts though and he accepted 3 sticks of Wrigley's chewing gum ($1 a stick), and a pair of my Mom's panty hose for his wife. Those were hard to come by and it was a big deal to him. A couple of girls sold all their jeans... ($100 a pair). When we were leaving they stopped them in customs for not having any pants and having more money than they came with... they were interogated and their money confinscated. One man was so sick with food poisoning, they were not going to allow him to get on the plane. He actually had to sign a waiver that he did not care if he died... he was not going to be left in Russia! It was quite a trip to me at the hight of the Cold War. My Dad still has a really good picture of St. basil's Cathedral hanging on his wall. |
