Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() scoobysdad - 2009-02-26 9:01 AM I found it very interesting on American Idol last night that half the songs selected by the 20-something (and younger) contestants were from the 80's. I just don't understand how anyone can possibly think the 70s was a better decade for music than the 80's. The 70s only gave us Led Zeppelin and... uhhhhhhhh, ummmmmmm. Hmm. Talk about a black hole for music. The 90s were even worse than the 70s. In Re the 70'sHow's about a few landscape-shifting names like: Ramones Clash Big Star Not to say that it was better or worse than the 80's, but I would argue it was no black hole. The specific segments of the decade I liked best were the Power Pop years(78-80?) and the rockabilly revival. I would freely admit the bands most noteworthy from these eras are remembered by approximately six people. |

I will freely acknowledge the 70's also gave us the birth of punk, Elvis Costello/Nick Lowe, Blondie, Talking Heads, Modern Lovers, Ziggy-era Bowie, T-Rex and the glam rock movement, Tom Petty and some decent Southern Rock... it wasn't without merit. But it also plagued us with... AM soft rock (Captain and Tenille, etc.), bad disco, bad KISS (bordering on the most over-rated band of all time), really self-indulgent prog rock (Yes, Emerson Lake & Palmer)... I'm sorry I gotta stop before I upset my stomach further. |

Resident Curmudgeon ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() WooHoo, a Big Star citing! You can find mounds of crapola in any decade of popular music. Usually when you find someone saying the {60s, 70s, 80s, 90s} suck it 's because the music that fits into their limited frame of reference sucks. Also not mentioned from the 70's: great stuff from Pink Floyd (DSOTM, WYWH, The Wall), Stones(Exile, Sticky Fingers), Springsteen (Born to Run, Darkness...), Bowie (Hunky Dory, Ziggy), Jackson Browne, Fleetwood Mac, Al Green, Steely Dan, Roxy Music, Iggy Pop with and without The Stooges and so on, and so on. |

I'm sorry I gotta stop before I upset my stomach further. Yes yes YES, there was bad music in the 70's, like every decade. Boston is right up there with Kiss as an example of some of the worst bad music. But the GOOD music overwhelms the bad music. Think funk - Stevie Wonder, Grand Funk Railroad, etc. The 70's gave us Hard Rock, Punk, Funk, Metal, and some great jazz, (continued from previous decades). I hate disco as much as the next guy (probably more), but one bad genre doesn't undo all the rest. The 80's didn't give us good genres, with the possible exception of Punk (which matured from the 70s). Alt rock grew in the 90's, but didn't really mature until the 90's. The 80's was a black hole of music. We got half of punk, alternative rock and Big Hair? Big Hair = Disco. And Def Leppard was 70's, not 80's. Remember the first 3 albums? That was great hard rock - really progressive. Edit: The 80's gave us good rap. I didn't like it at the time, but in hindsight was really good and creative, even if it has since been co-opted by nefarious interests. Edited by D.Z. 2009-02-26 9:56 AM |

That doesn't invalidate my point. condorman - 2009-02-25 10:24 AM meherczeg - 2009-02-25 10:17 AM you were the one calling it bad. i call it AWESOME! RAD! TOTALLY COOL!!! There is an NPR show about the nonredeemable qualities of 80s music, including a challenge to find a top song from a single artist in the 80s which was better then a song in the 70s. The prime argument for the downfall of music in the 80s is the song "We Built This City."  I had the link in email at my old job - otherwise I'd post the link to the NPR show - it is long, but really entertaining. So the musical genius of "Hot Stuff" ("hot hot hot. Stuff Stuff Stuff"  I think I just threw up a little in my mouth just remembering those horrible ear-worms. Well, the post I was responding to implies ALL 80's music is worse than ALL 70's music. There is both carp and great music in both decades. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() condorman - 2009-02-25 10:15 AM The current iPod mix I have queued up is my "80s Bad Music" mix. It has a smattering of the 80s hairbands. I turned the car off to "Live and Let Die" by Guns n Roses, prior to that was "Round and Round" by RATT and before that "I wanna Rock" by Twisted Sister.
Do we all feel that we are "better" then the denim jean jackets of 80s music? I say embrace Def Leopard, hug a Bangle, even call a Private Eye every now and then.
Live and Let Die by GNR was released in September of 1991...and by the way, if you think anything off of Appetite For Destruction (released in '87) was anything remotely close to "hairband material," you've got some learning to do. Raw, sleazy, genuine Guns N' F%^&** Roses. Certain bands transcended the decade...GNR, Metallica, Public Enemy, NWA... |

You're the second person to recommend this Pandora deal. I just went over - we'll see what they have to offer. I searched for DJ DB, and they had DJ Dara which is ALMOST as good as DB. Listening now. |

Last.fm is much, much better. After about 45 minutes Pandora starts to play more and more indie music that isn't really relevant to what I programmed the station with and that no one's ever heard of. And the fact is that a lot of indie music is obscure for good reason: it's terrible. Last.fm seems to have been programmed at least in part by actual people whereas Pandora's programming is based on characteristics of the music that take into account everything but the art. It's like trying to analyze poetry by counting and analyzing the distinct words. As to all or most of the music from any era being "bad": Every era/style of music is an overreaction to that which immediately preceded it. This applies as much to 18th century classical music as it does to western popular music of the past few decades. It comes down to this for me: 90% of the overall output in any art form isn't very good. Of the remaining 10%, half is barely acceptable and at most, maybe 1% is really good. While most of the output of any art form isn't really worth listening to/viewing/reading, it's always worth the effort to create it. |
