Champion 10157 Alabama | Subject: RE: Got hit by a car today You guys are amazing! Thank you all for the wonderful comments. . I woke up at 3 am this morning trying to find a way to lay that didn't hurt. My head was hurting from what was probably a morphine hangover. . I did want to respond to the questions asked. . I don't know if they ticketed the driver or not. They whisked me off in the ambulance. The driver didn't say anything to me that I recall. I'm sure she was pretty shook up too having almost killed someone. I found out later that she'd told the cop that I swerved and she swerved and that she thought I was coming straight towards her. Since we were traveling perpendicular I'm not sure how I was coming straight towards her but I suppose when she finally did look up and see me on her bumper and the hood of her car, it probably looked like I was coming straight towards her. . Re-reading my OP, I wrote that I was thrown about 50' but this was wrong. I'd heard someone say that at the crash scene but they were a poor judge of distance. I was thrown about 15 feet and my bike ended up another 15 feet west of me. . The state trooper told me to call my insurance company and they would contact and coordinate with her insurance company. This seems kinda odd since I was not in a vehicle so I'm not sure my auto insurance has a dog in this fight. Nevertheless, I've contacted them - o course they don't work on weekends. I also called my LBS (actually did this while still in the ER) and asked them to check on the availability of another B12 Felt 60 cm - they said they'd have to wait till Monday. . "You might want to try wearing a more conspicuous jersey next time. No wonder she didn't see you. I am sure you blended right in." This comment made my day! :-) I've taken some razzing over my high-vis jersey - maybe it helps but obviously it's not fool proof. . "Your helmet did its job and your Felt gave its life for you." Several people commented on the helmet and I've been just staring at my helmet and looking at the two big cracks and thinking that would have been my skull. Even with the helmet, I still got a cut on my head - right under one of the cracks. Yes, my Felt gave its life for me. I can't help but wonder if the carbon absorbed more shock than an AL or steel frame would have. . We heading out Wednesday on vacation for 10 days and I was going to take a training holiday anyway so I guess the timing of this crash was not bad. I'm just so thankful that my leg won't be in a cast! Kinda hard to go snorkeling with a cast on your leg! . Thanks again for all the well wishes. . ~Mike Edited by Rogillio 2008-06-22 5:31 AM |

I was earlier this year. Fortunately for her, I've dropped about 30 lbs during my IM training. :-) It's a good day to be alive! ~Mike |

Scares the heck out of me too Fred. I guess a little humor is my attempt at dealing with it. I can't stop thinking about how close I came to orphaning my two kids. I went back to the scene of the crime this morning and took a couple of pictures. The frist two are my view heading south. She was coming from the east (left side of picture near the fence). The 3rd picture is her view as she approached the stop sign. ~Mike (My view on Lucas Ferry Heading south -1.jpg) (My view on Lucas Ferry Heading south - 2.jpg) (Her view heading west on Lindsey Rd.jpg) (One of two cracks on my helmet.jpg) Attachments ---------------- My view on Lucas Ferry Heading south -1.jpg (39KB - 14 downloads) My view on Lucas Ferry Heading south - 2.jpg (44KB - 15 downloads) Her view heading west on Lindsey Rd.jpg (38KB - 14 downloads) One of two cracks on my helmet.jpg (50KB - 15 downloads) |

Expert 773 | Subject: RE: Got hit by a car today I'm thinking the same thing as marmadaddy. With no tall structures or hills around to obstruct her view, just what was she looking at? Perhaps she was distracted with the radio or doing something else instead of paying attention to the street signs. I can't remember where I read this, but driver distractions and not paying attention are the number one cause of vehicle accidents. Glad you're alright. Enjoy your vacation and come back stronger and hungrier than before, but with a renewed sense of gratefulness that you have a guardian angel riding with you. Edited by crazylegs 2008-06-22 8:13 AM |

It is probably a good thing that you have a vacation coming up, so you can rest a bit and allow your body to heal. Hopefully you'll be OK for IMKY, but most importantly things were not any worse than they were. |

This seems kinda odd since I was not in a vehicle so I'm not sure my auto insurance has a dog in this fight. Nevertheless, I've contacted them - Mike - when the same thing happened to my wife (I referenced it in an earlier response), our insurance company handled everything as well. Why? I think since we have uninsured/underinsured coverage their "dog in the fight" was making sure the insurance company for the lady who hit my wife did cover everything they were supposed to. As it was, it turned out to be good for us that they were. The lady who hit my wife had minimum legal insurance, and it only covered half of the final $50k insurance payout. Since our insurance had been handling the whole thing with them, we didn't have to deal with the hassle of figuring out who needed to cover and pay what. P.S. - Our LBS was a big help as well. The driver's insurance at first wanted to only pay for depreciated cost of the bicycle. Our LBS wrote up an estimate that essentially said since they wouldn't be able to find the exact same bike used, then her's wasn't replaceable - and instead stated what a new, equivalent bike would cost. Of course, they put down retail plus cost of add-ons she'd done. The LBS then didn't charge us retail for the new bike, which left some money for other bike toys. The driver's insurance didn't argue, I think because they feared pushing too hard could lead to litigation. (We had lots of pictures like you do.) Edited by Wolfgate 2008-06-22 11:22 AM |

You know, I always do this. Both when I'm in my truck and especially when I'm on my bike. My daddy told me when I was learning how to drive "Always assume that every one else on the road is a complete idiot and apt to do the unexpected." I saw this car approaching the intersection and she was slowing down like she was going to stop and then, at the last minute, she floored it to shoot over through the intersection. There was not time to react...it happened so fast. I keep going over this in my mind and I don't know what I could have done differently. Had she not been slowing down like she was gonna stop I would have hit the brakes or taken the ditch but it looked like she was stopping. ~Mike |

Thanks Richard. This is good to know. I don't know if we have 'uninsured motorist' or not but we have pretty good insurance (USAA) so I bet we have this too. Did your wife get anything for 'pain and suffereing'? I'm not looking to sue anyone and am not looking at this like a lottery ticket but it would be nice to get few bucks to mabye get some better aerobars or something. Cool. I just dug out our auto insurance policy and we do have unisured motorist! I feel much better now. At least now I feel comfortable that, even if she doesn't have insurance, I will get compensated for my bike. Whew! ~Mike Edited by Rogillio 2008-06-22 11:49 AM |
