How did you get around picking a state of Mexico on page 2 of the entry process? State is required, but only those in MX are present. Thx for your help.

I got an email from the the RD and I posted this at ST as well as some have some questions/concerns:

I got an email from the RD last night and here are a few answers for the concerns:
  • Race will be on Nov 29 (the error on date was made by IM live not by IM Coz website)
  • The swim course indicates 1 loop right now but it will most likely changed to 2 loops
  • Chances are that the swim will be no wetsuit
  • On bike/run course they will be purified watter provided on plastic bottles for the bike and sealed plastic bags for the run both delivered by the sponsoring water company
  • Bike course will be indeed closed to the traffic.

*NOTICE* I do NOT work nor I am affiliated with IM Coz, I just happen to know the organizers and they are happy to provide any info you guys might need. If I can help getting some of the questions/concerns addressed I'll be happy to email the RD, but please don't PM/email me like I work for them.

Thanks for the info.  I am in after much support from my Hubby.  I am registered #280!  I will be 40 for 2 weeks when the race occurs, but online the system didn't age me up - it lists me in the 35-39 AG.  Guess I will have to email the RD and get older!

Does anyone know what the currents will/could be like?

I swam in Cozumel just a couple of months ago and noticed current pushing north along the shore (or from left to right). If that is the case on race day, it will be slow on the way out and fast on the way back in.

It's Coz.  Could be current, could be no current.  Impossible to predict what the currents will be tomorrow, much less 11/09.  Generally, currents are weaker in the southern sites like Chankanaab than the northern sites (i.e., Barracuda, currents so strong dive ops generally won't take you there unless you are truly advanced).

If there is current, AFAIK it runs north like snausa mentioned

Can we make it so that no current going out and strong current on the way Back?Laughing

And what do you mean "If I do the race" ? I thought this would be right up your alley. Better start looking for a private plane to haul all your scuba/photo/tri gear. It will be a lot cheaper than airline fees!

I'm trying to convince my bf to do the race, but he's (unreasonably) petrified of sharks. Now, he surfed in San Diego for 3 years, so I know he can get over this fear- but for you divers that have been there, what's the water like? Will it be like swimming in La Jolla Cove, where you get to watch a school of fish travel beneath you while swimming?

Much clearer than that.  Only sharks I've ever seen in Coz are docile nurse sharks that lie on the bottom

Hmm....clearer, don't know if that's a selling point or not... and he really hates those nurse sharks It's going to take some work!

I have the same fear and I dont know why every year I watch shark week at DC  ANYWAY once I get in the water during a race all my fears go away.

Ya know...I absolutely love Mexico and would love to do this race. One big problem as I see it. Last year training for Clearwater the last two weeks were tough. Day Light Savings time kicks in and its dark later in the AM and dark earlier in the PM. Like 5PM pitch dark. Training in the NE is going to be a killer for this race.

Good luck to all. I am not 100% out but it might turn into a last ditch effort for a race.

Like ChrisM said, I have only seen the occasional small nurse shark ... not while swimming, but while diving around reef. Barracuda and sting rays are much more common. But nothing to worry about.

I also second what he said about the water clarity. Visibility typically ranges from 80 - 120 feet ... and 200 ft visibility is not uncommon.

I have been SCUBA diving many times in Cozumel... seriously... the nurse sharks we found (like once) were not wanting to be bothered. They were hiding under rocks in probably 30 feet of water. He will be FINE. Not to mention the water is so clear you can see down MANY feet (good 20 feet). If something is coming you will see it.

Just tell him to swim faster than the slowest person. Problem solved.

Yes, this is another big concern. Sept and Oct are fine, but once Nov hits, it's tough. The only counterpoint is that at least you're tapering for a good chunk of that time, so it's a lot less training time. Still something to consider....

I second this question. Do rent a bike box and check her in at the airport or are there other bike transport options?

I'm thinking that flying with it is probably the only option.  Not sure that tri bike transport will drive to Mexico!  But it would be nice if they did!

Another option will probably be to ship it to a local bike shop.  I would choose this as I don't trust the airlines with my bike for anything!  Then again... UPS just lost a bike I sold on ebay and shipped to the buyer.  And they are dragging their feet paying me for the bike, which was insured.  Hmmm.  Maybe I'll use Fed Ex!

As others have said, yes its super clear, but seriously....tell him there is nothing that will stay in the area as soon as 2000 people start flailing in the water as one big group.
