x2
I saw an article in Runner's World where the writer said he'd rather run without shorts than without his 305.  I agree.  It's like a security blanket...

Wow, great lists. I would have to say the one piece of gear I always feel silly without is my Polar 720i and HR strap. At the very least, the watch.
After that, body glide and injini socks for long runs.
Maui Jim sunglasses-I love them.

Ipod nano and the arm band carrying case. Runs can get boring without it.

econway - 2009-06-16 2:36 PM x2 on the fuel belt - the 4-bottle model w/ extra case for gel/keys. add a clip-on ipod and your golden.

x3 for the fuel belt, without the ipod.

Oakley M-Frame sunglasses with Rx is seriously challenging the fuel belt though.

the bottles are 7 oz bottles (or 10 oz if going really long), spread evenly across the belt; 2 in front, 2 in rear. Distributes the weight around your waist, never even notice its there. Much easier than carrying a single 20+ bottle, or one of the hand-held water carriers. and as you drink the water, the weight goes down. The other stuff, a gel or 2 and a key weigh almost nothing. This is only for long runs - more than an hour, also, not for a 5K or 10K training run. Only when you really need to bring fluids.

An ipod shuffle is so small that it can clip on your shirt or shorts and you never notice any weight.

Hey, people still wear camelbacks while running, I think THAT"s crazy!

I can't pinpoint any one thing honestly.  Everything has a purpose, but none of it is really "needed" to train/race.  Some shoes and some clothes work in all situations.

If you backed me into a corner I'd probably say a pair of Desoto 400 mile shorts.  Bad azz and the best cycling shrots I've owned (and I've owned a lot).  But they could be classified as more of a treat than a necessary thing.  And at $130+ they aren't cheap ..........

My aerobottle...seriously, I would definitely not drink enough water without it.  The no hands/convenience and availability of the water make sure I'm drinking up!
Body Glide/Vaseline--keep me from getting torn up!
Everything else I train with is great, but I need those other two!

I buy just about everything that comes out and give it a try.  Couple of things I really like that have not been mentioned.

1)   SportCount Chrono 100 Ring stop watch.  I love this thing for counting laps, timing laps, etc.  Very easy to click after a lap.  There is a watch coming out later this summer that is suppose to automatically count laps and number of strokes.  If it works I will retire my Chrono 100

2)  Profile aero water bottle.  There is a new one with two compartments.  I put flat coke in one and water in the other.  Love it.

3)   Tempo Trainer from Finis.  I will put it on a certain pace and then put it in my cap.  I then push myself to complete my 25yd lengths before the beep.  Much easier to push myself and does not require looking at your watch or ring

4)  Powertap.  I love my powertap and really could not live without it.  I have become completely dependent.  What sucks is that it is in my training wheel and I don't have it when I race.

5)  Like everyone I love my Garmins, 305 fore and 305 edge.  Probably the 305 forerunner is more important to me than the edge.

6)  I like the gutter.  Keep sweat out of my eyes.

7)  Oakley radars.  They are amazing how sweat does not stick to them.  I really can't figure out how it works.  Plus I got them on a huge sale for $50.  What a deal.

*Like everyone else, my Garmin 305! Love it!
*I also love this thing I wear on my head..it's called a bondi band. It's so awesome. I sweat alot and this totally keeps the sweat from dripping down my face...even better than a headsweats hat!
*Ipod shuffle

In the winter, I love my knee high Smartwool socks. I also run and ride in old tri shorts exclusively.

* Suunto T4c watch - so easy to use, loads of features and can be built up with a selection of pods to do GPS, bike cadence etc.

* Orca tri shorts - whole new world of swimming in these compared to the normal baggy shorts, and I do not do speedos, just not a good look for me :-)

* Tacx rear saddle mount twin bottle cages under 20GBP what a bargain (it's not actually the bike so still counts in this thread)

Hey, people still wear camelbacks while running, I think THAT"s crazy!

I run with a camelback if it is more than 2 hours and I "out" Like in the everglades. Not a lot of choice. Plus, it is friggin hot and I sweat a TON.

I gotta have my 2 liters sometimes. Plus, I figure it is like wearing one of those weight vests, when I race without it, I will feel light as a feather!
