Extreme Veteran 408![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Spokane, Wa | Subject: RE: what's your favorite gel??I started out using Cliff shots until a few months ago when I decided I wanted to rely on course nutrition for IMCDA. This forced me to switch to powergel. I will never go back. They taste great and are a lot thinner. I always felt like I had to chew with the Cliff Shots. |

If you don't consume the whole thing at once, the rest of the gel comes out of the package leaving a big mess wherever. And if you DO consume the whole thing, there is still residue that in warmer weather (or warm jersey pockets) softens and slowly oozes out all over the place. But even if they spill all over, blocks and beans don't leave a sticky mess everywhere, and you can stick them in your jersey pocket or bento box and not worry about them." I disagree. Gu makes a very nice gel flask that you can stick in your pocket, in your bento box or affix to your bike if you don't want to eat the whole gel all at once. This is good if you are butterfingers on the bike or if you want a "hit" of gel every so many minutes. Here is a photo from one for sale on Powertri.com: http://www.powertri.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=143 I do take the whole Gu, but you can't just mash the envelope in the middle. I roll up from the bottom like toothpaste (yes, I can do this in aero) and flatten it as I go. This means (1) I don't miss out on any delicious calories, and (2) there is nothing in the envelope to leak out in my shirt. And, if you save your Gu envelopes, the Gu Stash-Your-Trash program will make a donation to the charity of your choice (I choose Athletes for a Cure) and send you free stuff. http://www.guenergy.com/about_us/enviro-community_stash-your-trash Edited by Mrs. brown_dog_us 2009-07-03 1:07 PM |

That wasn't me that said that! HMMMPH!!! (just kidding!) In fact, I suggested using a gel flask not once, but twice in this thread!! I still don't tend to use gels on the bike though - I prefer to get my nutrition on the bike in liquid form, but I LOVE my gel flask for long runs!! |

I'll have to give some of the more popular ones a try! However, I am kind of concerned about the whole messiness factor (chocolate gu running down the leg...ewww!) I totally found this. I really like sportbeans and shotbloks but my stomach revolts after two hours with them. Plus the bits in the teeth is kinda gross to me after a while I just feel like i have sugar mouth that water doesn't seem to wash it away. Even though I prefer the bloks or beans the gels work well for workouts longer than two hours. I take forever to get through a gel but it works for me. That's totally me -- I prefer sports beans or the Honey Stinger chews, but after two hours I can't stand the thought of chewing anything. I learned that lesson the hard way in my first marathon last year. That's why I now train pretty much entirely with gels. |

Up until this point I have mostly relied on sport beans, powerbar, clif bar, and shot bloks. I was always afraid that the consistency of gels would make me gag...and it still may, but I won't know until I try them..right?? So, what's your favorite brand and flavor?? If you don't want a THICK gel... go for Accel Gel. It's thinner. I think the strawberry/kiwi is the only decent flavor. I can do thicker gels now and have moved on to Gu. I love the vanilla bean and I have taken a liking to lemon/lime. |

I think the strawberry/kiwi is the only decent flavor. For some bizarre reason, Accel Gel decided to change their formula. The new ones (with the rounded top instead of the squared-off top) are MUCH thicker. I have no idea why they did this. Accel Gel vanilla used to be my fave because of the texture. I don't like the thicker formula nearly as much. |
