Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm trying to decide if a trip to the Walgreens Take Care clinic to get a shot is more likely to expose me to the flu or protect me. Any thoughts? Our doctor doesn't have any more and they say they are full of flu anyway. Take Care is the only place who can give one to my 3 yo. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just got my flu shot yesterday at Rite Aid. They had just gotten in the vaccine yesterday. Had to wait about an hour...but that was after going to three different clinics Tuesday and having a parent of a student call her dad to see if his office had any. Everyone is out it seems! |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Got a quick-onset fever and a sore throat the night before I left for my annual Christmas trip to Hawaii (sorry, guy who sat next to me in our upgraded-to-first-class seats) and managed to keep it at bay with NSAIDS, sleep, and parental TLC as long as I never let four full hours elapse between drugs. (When that lapsed: face on fire, achiness, difficulty swallowing.) Symptoms disappeared just as suddenly mid-morning on day 4 and I PR'd a 5K on day 5. So was that the flu? Hard to know. Mostly I'm grateful that neither of my parents got it from me. FTR they are both in their young 70's and generally hearty, and both had flu shots third year. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I caught the UK bug on a trip there a couple of weeks ago. 18 hours of nastiness and I was good to go. PR'd a half marathon the following morning. Full disclosure, it was my first half and it was ugly. And yep, got the shot. As a side question, i saw earlier on the news that "projections" suggest that 50k could die from this. Anybody know what the stats are for a normal year? I hate it when they give numbers without any context. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My company has an onsite clinic which gives out flu shots.....for free. Thus far we've had 16 confirmed cases of the flu (all 'B') and guess what. Not one of those cases got their flu shot. My clinic manager said that we had 10 cases total last year and from what I understand, we haven't even hit the peak season yet. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I can attest now that the stomach flu is a complete butt kicker. 6-8 hours of hell and then exhaustion. My poor youngest son has had both, was already sick with the sore throat / fever / chills variety, and then got the other from his grandfather. My other son & I have both just had the stomach one. Hoping my wife dodges the bullet. Father-in-law had the flu shot and still got the stomach variety, so I'm not sure if it offers any protection for that one. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My co-workers have been ravaged by it. We've taken to calling it 'the plague' here just north of San Francisco. Its been going on for weeks. Touch wood, I've been fine. I had a flu shot in mid October-only person at work that has had one- plus a pneumonia shot since I have a chronic lung disease. I guess 27 people have died in Minnesota , \ The Dr. offices are full from what I hear, and there's a lot of talk about getting the shot if you haven't. Here's the article about the high school girl. Very sad |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() How does one die from the flu? What is it that kills a person? Is it something from the virus itself or does a person develop other problems as a result of their weakened condition? I've never had true Flu.....but my wife had verified Influenza A about 10 years ago and it wiped her out for a week. I know it can kill very young children and old people, but how does it kill healthy teenagers/adults? |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The flu overwhelms the immune system and leaves the person suceptible to bacterial infections, pneumonia, etc. It can also cause severe dehydration that can be a contributing factor as well. |

don't underestimate the influenza virus. Yes it can kill a previously healthy teenager. Without any superinfection complications. Viruses cause massive amounts of toxins in your body and you can essentially drown in your own fluid. |

The flu shot protects you against various strains of the influenza virus. Stomach bugs, often called the stomach flu, are caused by other types of viruses (noravirus, rotavirus, etc.). |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So many people here in Australia say they have the flu when it's a cold. The difference? With the flu you are confined to your bed and if you saw a thousand dollars right there outside your window you could not get up to pick it up. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It hit my son on Friday. He feels better now, but it hit me today. The doctor said I should stay away from people until at least Wednesday, assuming the fever is gone some time tomorrow. She said that it's contagious for about 24 hours after the fever is gone.

this year the vaccine is estimated to be 62% effective. but even amongst those who get sick despite the vaccine, they tend to have a milder illness. I would estimate (from what I am seeing in the office) that those who are exposed and did not get vaccinated as higher than 80% (and actually closer to 98%). but that is not scientific - just what I am seeing in the office |

![]() I'm so paranoid I barely want to leave the house. I did not get the shot and for no good reason. I was just distracted with other things. My family all refused - kids had screaming meltdowns when I even brought it up. My son and husband both come home from school every day telling me about some kid who came to school with a temp or someone started to feel sick at school and had to be sent home. I spent the weekend cleaning and trying to disinfect my house although I think that is pointless. I could not help myself. Washed both my kids backpacks, school shoes, sheets, pillows, bedding, on and on. I wash my hands so much they are chapped and raw. We have not had it yet but I feel like our days are numbered. |

What about getting the flu mist if they're brought to tears thinking about the shots? I know there are some restrictions on who should get the mist, but healthy adults/kids I think are good to get it. It's an up the nose snort rather than the poke. Here's the CDC's page on the nasal spray http://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/qa/nasalspray.htm#vaccinated |
