Speedy recovery Kathy! I'm so sorry it happened to you. I have been reading a lot of your posts and you kindly gave me advise in a past.  Do not worry about the training, even if you have to be out for 8 weeks full recovery is much more important that maintaining your fitness level. You can regain it quickly once you are better.

Holy moly!  Thank heavens you were wearing a helmet.  You had an angel sitting in with you in the peleton for sure.

Hoping you have a speedy recovery and and are able to get back on the bike soon.

Subject: RE: Bike Race Crash-med update

I saw my ortho today who says I can ride when I feel comfortable doing so...his concern is my knee with road rash & being banged up. May do short easy trainer ride end of the week.

I'll return for follow up next Friday & start PT afterwards.

Swim back at it probably 4-6 weeks, running sooner as I can adjust & guard my arm more.

My coach called & was happy that I'm in good spirit relatively and am mostly have little pain other than moving my arm. He wants to wait to see how things progress to see if I can do Cranberry late Aug. Oly & Nutmeg HIM in late Sept.

I wonder how this will effect me mentally...doubt much on tri bike...may be more cautious in group rides.

I'm starting to remember the crash but would prefer not to.

I did put more pictures in an album...none are gross....some are fun....

Wow, I admire you! Most people would not even think about training so soon again. You will be my inspiration to get moving next time I have a minor ache and find myself looking for excuses not to run... All the best for your recovery!

Glad to hear your mostly alright

Sounds (And Looks) like the helmet really saved you. If they ever put a Hay Bale in front of that sign, maybe they can name it after you. (Or at least maybe you can get naming rights to the sign itself)

Hope your recovery is swift and that you can make your late season race.

Cheers

yeah palaton is not place for a sane person at all. Stick with tris and time trials. .

Hope you get better. If swimming is great rehab for your shoulder will guess what this sports is the best one because no matter what happens it really can not keep you from training. .

Hang in there and get healthy soon.

FIRST I want to join everyone in wishing you a speedy recovery.

SECOND what is bothering me about your post is that it was your first crit and you were riding with CAT 3/4s. If it was your first race how did you get a 3/4 liscence and skip over 5?

I only ask because I know a couple Cat 3 racers and those races at that level can get really hairy, especially in the sprint.

Women start as 4's no cat 5's for us. Since the field is small they combine the 3's & 4's. 3s are better riders & better to start with really.

briderdt - 2007-06-11 8:45 AM First, I wish you a speedy recovery. It can take much longer for the mental wounds to heal such that you can get back into the thick of things in pack situations (took me almost two years before I'd get "in" the pack). Work on it. It's okay. Second, this statement really has me worried: "LBS I bought it at & will have it checked out at discouraged me from racing as it is dangerous...." So the BIKE SHOP was discouraging you from racing? Um, I find that very self-defeating on their part. It CAN be dangerous. And especially in the less-experienced crowd. But I've never heard of a shop discouraging some one from giving it a go.

They have a men's race team...owner races. It may be they don't think I as a 45 YO women should race. I asked them for help & was given none...another LBS pointed me in the right direction to the team interested in helping develop new women racers & has a huge women cat 4 team. Bought my bike from first shop though.

FYI Kathy, results were posted and the finishing time in that second race was 38m14s, resulting in an average of 23.5mph.  I thought you'd like to know.  You were hanging with the group at some fast speeds.  While it's overshadowed right now, make sure you leave room to be proud of yourself for that.

I'm glad to hear that you are feeling a little better today.  My thoughts and prayers are with you that you can recover quickly and get back to the things you love to do.

I know that being out sucks, but think of the cool story you have now.

Guy at the bar - "so how did you hurt your arm?  Lose control of blender?"

K - "nah, I was riding in a pelaton and some guy in front of me couldn't keep up and went down causing a 5 bike pile up.  no biggie"

Guy at the bar - "Oh!?  well.....uh......I used to ride bmx when I was younger(just trying to relate since you punked him)"

Biker chicks are cool!!!  Mend fast

Kathy,

makes me wonder if finding a training series, as opposed to a "real" crit would be better for you for awhile. You are definately fast enough, but I wonder if more experience on your part could have prevented the crash, or did someone in front of you go down and take you out? Were your wheels overlapping? maybe those are the parts you don't want to remember.

i can tell you that even though I've done 5 "practice" crits at our local track, I would still be wary of a "real" race. We only have about 9 women that show up, so even when we're all together, it's still pretty much a single paceline.

Anyway, once again, speedy healing! Glad to hear you're back on the bike.

Kathy...

So sorry about the crash, but I just wanted to offer some encouraging words. Last Labor Day during a sprint I launched myself into a ditch and ended up with exactly the same injury. (Thank goodness for helmets.) I did have to scratch the HIM I had scheduled the mid-September , and I was incredibly depressed for a couple of weeks thinking I'd never be able to get back to training, let alone racing any time soon. But the good news is that once I got my range of motion back and the pain lessened, I was able to start biking and running fairly quickly. The one thing that suffered was the swimming because it was the end of January before I could swim without incredible discomfort, and even then it took quite a while before I could swim more than 20 or 30 minutes at a time. However, all said and done, I was still able to get back to it soon enough to do IMAZ last month.

One of the things that helped most (and something I still have to do) is tape my shoulder while I'm working out to lend support to the AC joint. MY PT came up with this brilliant plan and it made a world of difference. Use Elasoplast tape and when you're ready to get back in the pool, you can use a Tegaderm patch over the tape to keep it in place.

Here's wishing you a speedy recovery, and thank God for helmets and good medical personnel.  You'll heal fast and be itching to get back on the training.

Yeah, that's the crappy thing about having small numbers. Sometimes the entire women's field is combined. So theortically, a woman could race her first race with Pros.

Kathy, I'm sorry to hear what happened, but I know with your attitude, you'll be back at 'er soon. Keep us updated on your progress.
