SSMinnow - 2010-04-14 4:15 AM YOO-HOO!!!!  It's time to start thinking about the weekend. WHO's RACING?

WHO's TAPERING?

WHAT ARE THE REST OF YOU PLANNING TO DO?

With all the people that raced last weekend, I thought I would throw in a question to help those that might be racing next weekend...wonder who that is??? what is the one thing you learned in your last race that could help your fellow MG'ers?

I AM!!!  Boston, here I come!!

Hubby got me a new outfit for the race -woohoo!  Hot pink and black, and it fits! Taper feels cruddy, which I'm told is a good thing.  Trying to organize lists for everyone who has a kid or a dog or a carpool for me while we're gone.  Swinging back and forth between total excitement and sheer panic.   Not looking foward to a 5 hour flight, either.  Also got Red Sox tickets for Sunday - it's gonna be quite a weekend, no matter how the race turns out.

Our tri club's motto is Train, Race & Party.  Hubby advises that this weekend he'll train (he's renting a cervelo in Boston), I'll race and we'll both party.  Kids will stay in school in California!!   I can't wait.

It seems a little early in the year for a triathlon in Boston, isn't the water too cold for OWS?  Anyway, good luck, don't push the bike too hard so that you blow up on the run...

jvanis - 2010-04-14 8:19 AM Curious for our power people.

What do you race different distances at % wise?  Based on my 230 (indoor trainer tests) FTP, I have been using 185-190ish which would be 80% as my endurance rides.  Did my longest rides 35 and 40 miles last week right around 185.  How much does it change going down to shorter races.  My longest race bike last year was 20 miles, shortest sprint was 13.  Since I am sitting at work, I figured I would throw this out there as a question until I can get on my bike and do one of these rides at higher wattage and see how my legs go.

So lets hear it as a % of FTP:
Sprint
Oly
HIM
IM
My general guidelines: Sprint (~13mi): 95%+ / Balls to the wall, not sure I'd even monitor watts really... just do it Oly: 85-90% / Holding back a little HIM: 75-80% / Pushing it, but contained IM: 70-75% / Comfortable For example, my FTP is right around yours, and I averaged 181w (78%) for a 2:30 bike split at Boise.

Ryan - couple of questions.  At 181W, what was your watts to kg ratio at that power level?  Also wondering what the Boise course was like, cause that's a crushing pace.  Last thing, the average - was that the actual average or you pedaling or NP average?

Thanks

kickitinok - 2010-04-14 11:20 AM Race plan? Do I really need a race plan for a sprint? Don't I just swim as fast as I can, bike like mad, then gimp-run for 10 minutes into my run until my quads relax?

no.

you have to go at 100+% of you're FTP.

you have to have at least a 45 oz aero bottle.  and one behind your seat.

tape 6 gu's to your bike.

two spare tubes.  and 8 CO2's.

you have to wear newtons.

compression sleeves on the legs and arm coolers.

you have to have a tri bike and race wheels.

this is all a bunch of crap.  you just have to have fun.

i've tried calling galveston beach patrol twice today but to no avail.  my wife also want to do it.  we'll get it figured out. andy's right on about the booties.  you won't need them.

Fixed it for ya ; )

Unfortunately I didn't get any training in this weekend but I did get lots of yard work done & I'm feeling it today.

Why do I think you were Belly Dancing instead of doing yardwork?

I was belly dancing WHILE doing yardwork.....I guess this is why the neighbors think I'm weird. Tongue out

John - You're full of it. I'm new and nervous - don't be surprised if I show up with all that stuff.

Srsly though, I get the feeling the beach patrol aren't too sociable. I just emailed them again today. In case you don't have it, here's their email:

s[email protected]

But don't click on the link to email them. I had to add the "s" to the front of the name so the link won't work. Just copy and paste.

Ok, off to run two freakin' miles, then I'm heading to the lake. I don't have a fancy GPS, just an old Garmin etrex, but hubby can use it in the kayak. I'm going to freeze my t*ts off.

Seriously for your first race just relax and enjoy.  Thank all the volunteers, police, etc.  Remember to smile when you cross the finish line, anything more than that is just extra...

Don't read too much into the temperature of the water there in OKC, the water will be 10-15 degrees warmer in Galveston

HollyW - 2010-04-12 1:23 PM WOW...looks like everyone had a busy weekend!!  Super huge congratulations to everyone who raced this weekend!  I haven't got a chance to read the race reports yet but can't wait to do so.

Tongue out

DANG - I need to get up to the City more often...

Yay! Andy's got the nomenclature down! The City is a groovy place....belly dancing landscapers, chicks in wetsuits freezing their t*ts off....what more could you ask for?

and Red Dog Saloon...

(no, not really....)

Please say it ain't so, Andy! That place is super nasty. (From what I've heard - never been there......) *cough*
