I really plan on jump starting my improvement in the out-season and after looking around I am considering that some "investment" in some coaching might be in order. Time to move off the boiler plate plan? Anybody have any experience with Endurance Nation? They are offering a 2 week free trial membership and I have really liked the plans that I have seen from them in the past. However, they are not cheap. Worth the money? Have you used them before? Do they deliver on what they preach about being able to cut your training time while increasing your fitness / speed? Ok to just purchase the plan or is the coaching worth the extra $$$? I am also looking at a couple of local coaches also....... what do you like / dis-like about having a local coach versus a virtual coach on-line? Input people! Dino may i ask why you think you need a coach? other than the boiler plate comment i don't see it. your first tri was just over a year ago, the sprint at geneva. bike was 18.4 and you ran 9:31's. fast forward to the oly at geneva last weekend. 19.6 and 8:50's on the run. and...a 20 second per hundred delta in swim time. with the exception of a few miles on the south end of the bike, the course is the same. yes, of course weather may be different. all in all, that's a pretty good "jump start" my friend. yes, i noticed the transitions. as far as en, while i turned down their invite to join the team a few months back, i've received a lot positive feedback about them. i'd be happy to put you in contact with people currently on the team to talk about it, if you'd like. keep in mind though, with well over 400 athletes, rich or patrick probably will not be writing your plan. you mention cost, money wise. en is not expensive. a little less than what's in the pm suzy sent you, i'd guess. but with steve you will get one on one. plus kim and suzy. that is worth millions right there.. ;-) maybe jeff will chime in. he's done "ok" without a coach. july 17th is coming...you're gonna rock! This is a hard one for me to chime in on since I do not have experience with a coach so I know I will probably miss benefits on that side. I think boiling it down comes to the money for me. For a little effort, I can find info on workout types to get faster or improve technique. At some point you run out of workout types and drills to add to the mix, and you just have to add the consistency aspect. Since I have been doing short distances, nutrition is one piece that is not in my mix that plays a huge part in (H)IMs. - Relying on someone's expertise to continue growing. (Swimming form is one of the biggest things I can think of here, knowledge of training with power follows this as well) - Planning workouts (Either from a convenience or from a strategical planning aspect) - Obviously money comes into play and this varies by what you expect from your coach (Types of contact, number of meetings etc) I am missing words tonight, has taken nearly 40 minutes to get this little bit put together. Have been dealing with a 2 day pounding headache and anxiously looking forward to a day off tomorrow. The main thing is if I can do some searching or reading and get 80% of the knowledge needed to grow, why not. At some point you will need help to improve, others need an accountability source that holds them to their workouts, others like the cheering and motivation from a coach (and make sure the coach you select is that type if that is what you desire) With a 2 week free trial, give it a shot, heck I was thinking about it to see what EN was all about. |

Raleigh Durham (RDU) is the main airport and about two hours form both places. Charlotte is an option too. We can work out the other details too, like shipping your bikes to NC. You can ship them to me and I will help set them up and can bring them down in my truck. I can take 3 and can attach a rack for 3 more. Sounds good, I appreciate it. Is this a pretty low key event where we can show up on Saturday and bring bikes morning of the race or more like an IM event with a drop the day before, etc??? Realize we have some time since the dates haven't been announced yet ![]() OK Here is a little more information: The exact dates will not be out until December for either race. White Lake (WL) is about 1:40 from Raleigh (south), 1:08 from Wilmington, NC (NW), and 3:25 from Charlotte, NC (East). The water is very clear as it is a spring fed lake. However, it can get choppy due to being so shallow. The bike is a single flat loop and the run is an out and back. Setup Events runs this event and they do a great job. It is low key and last year there were 425 men and 156 women. There are small Mom and Pop places to stay in (Elizabethton, NC, where WL is) or you can stay nearby. I stayed in a Hampton Inn in Lumberton about 30 minutes way. The facility has a great covered are and buildings all of which were used for pre and post race activities. Washington, NC is 4:21 East of Charlotte, 1:48 E of Raleigh, and 2:32 N of Wilmington. The race is run by FinishStrong Fsseries.com, and is sponsored by Inside Out Sports. The Bike is a two lap cpurse with a bottle hand off at the 14 mile mark. The run is a two lap out and back. (Lots of chances to see one another out there). The swim in in the Pamlico Sound. The water is not as clear as WL but is pretty smooth with virtually no current. Transition is terrific here and is less than 50 feet from the water in a small neighborhood that is closed off for the race. The town has really embrace triathlons and I believe at least 4 race are run here per year now. Oh, and this race had 200 entrants last year! My offer to act as bike receipiant for anyone flying stands, for either race. I have the tools and we can assemble and transport the bikes no problem. Right now the following people have shown interest: Chris Tracy Suzy Tony (& Sam?) Linda John Stan and maybe: Kim Kayla (relay, although she should just ship her bike.) Come on MG, commit! I know one of the principles of FS and will contact him regrading Washington today. Doug Kim? Ka Washington Edited by DougRob 2010-09-17 8:45 AM |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My $0.02 on coaching.... Eye signed up with a local coach: Essentially and basically , I pay her too put a plan to-gether for I every month. Eye know eye did the work, but it was her structure that got me threw this season. Now she's got me on a pretty decent running plan for Vegas, but still incorporating s/b to keep the base for the big race next summer. Eye like the fact that eye have accountability 2 someone other than me amd or myself. Someone that eye can/will C weekly to keep me on the write track. Their our ~~40 of us on the 'team', so I enjoy training with other Team Mates, A lot of us do tuesDay rides, eye can run at lunch with some of them as well. Eye njoy the socal side of it four sure. Enjoy this post John.... |

Now that I have embraced every flippin' type of OW this season, I can go with either race and not start weeping. Would be good to know the dates so I can try to lock down the man. Anything you can uncover Doug would be great. And I would definitely take you up on the bike assembly. Although I am taking a 4 week bike mechanic class this winter! Trev--what's up with the "eye"..... Dino--unlike Twin, I love talking to Steve or emailing with him frequently. Kim is much better at taking something and 'running' with it and I always have a million questions as to why. His style is such that he works well with either of us. I think finding someone you click with is key, he's gotta know his stuff, you have to be happy with contact level and you have to see progress over time. In many ways though it comes down to cash.....a canned plan will always be cheaper, some coaches will be cheaper than others...lots to consider! |

Doug Kim? Ka Washington I remain MORE than interested. I am not going to touch the highlighted quote, I'll let the boys go there. Suzy, go back to the English lesson John bestowed on some Texans. That is what Trevor was doing with his post. Trevor-until I read the final little (john enjoy this post), I was just browsing through your post wondering which mistakes were on purpose, since I am occasionally amused by the grammar that you use up in Canada! I will be rooting for you guys from the west coast. I don't think I can drag Kathy to Boston and then to North Carolina and then Wisconsin all in one year. That just might not go over so well. ![]() Hugs to Tracy. |
